Hello. My name's Will. I'm sort of an old hand at rom hacking in a sense. I've been doing this on and off (mostly off the past few years) since about 1998 or 1999. I don't really want to point out any of my old hacks, though, as I'm quite embarassed by them at this point. Well, actually, I do still really like the River City Ransom one, if I'm remembering the final release version correctly. The less said about my learning experience with Mega Man 3, though, the better.
Anyway, I've recently gotten back into hacking, and to distance myself from my old hacks, I have a new mantle: the Nosuch Gaming Co. Yes, a company with one employee, and he doesn't even get paid for his long hours. Heh. But yeah, that's why I decided to register here. I'm working on a pretty in-depth hack of Nekketsu Hockey-bu and wanted to see if there was any further information about it that I don't have yet. I felt it might be good etiquette to introduce myself before just jumping in and asking that, though. So, hello. |

| The longest I've ever been awake is from, I think, around noon one day until around 4 or 5 the following day. | |||

| I don't really have a nice neat label to apply to my beliefs, so I'm voting Other. I'm mostly sort of a combination of Agnostic and Buddhist, though a few others might be in the mix as well to some degree. Also, I was raised Christian, but I never really "felt" Christian. I don't know, it's complicated. | |||

| Blue is definitely my favorite color. In fact, some people have told me before that I probably put a bit too much blue into some of the stuff that I've done. But with your hack, even I'm going, "wow, maybe that's a little too much blue." That said, however, I'll still give it a try later to see if it doesn't seem like as much of a blue overdose once it's in action. | |||

| Okay, I've been working on a hack of Ike Ike! Nekketsu Hockey-bu for the last while, but due to palette map limitations, there's only so much I'm able to do with some of the teams in the game. So I'm wondering, is there a way to alter which palette set gets loaded for a particular sprite?
What I mean is, this game loads two palette sets specific to each team. Is it possible to get it to use the second set for certain sprites instead of the first set like it currently does? As a starter, I'm wanting to be able to do a little more with the kendo team's uniform than just alter the coloration of their chest protectors. Their palettes, at the moment, are: 0F 0F 30 27 0F 0F 11 27 So the basic standing sprite, using this scheme, would look something like:
In this example, what I'm wanting to change are the two blocks for the arm. Is there a relatively easy way to switch them to the second set or am I just up a creek on that idea? |

| I know it's only been like three days, but I guess I should just take the lack of a response so far as a no, shouldn't I? Oh well. | |||

Wow, that takes me back. Ahh, the late '90s, when everybody and their brother was doing a simple graphics hack of SMB1. Not that I'm knocking your hack so far, mind you. I find it refreshing, actually. I just, you know, wanted to exp![]() |

| On the other hand, there's such a wide dearth of SMB1 hacks (IMO, that is) that having a database thread for just SMB1 hacks might not be such a bad idea. | |||

| ...huh. Now that I think about it, as long as I've been following the whole furry thing, I'm almost a little surprised that I haven't seen this character like that (or worse) until now. | |||

| I vaguely recall finding one of Kirby's Adventure ages ago. It seems like it was some sort of simple "evil Kirby" hack, but I don't remember it that well.
Okay, a quick look at a certain rom site (can't say which) says that it is indeed Evil Kirby, but I honestly can't see any difference in the provided screenshot aside from a small tweak to his eyes. (edited by Nosuch on 04-18-06 01:50 PM) |

| For hex editing, I use Hexposure. For graphics, I use Tile Layer sometimes but mostly stick to Nesticle. IPS patching, if I ever get around to completing something enough to mess with it, is done with SNEStool.
And yes, I'm running an older system, for those wondering. ![]() |

| My present handle is Nosuch (short for the Nosuch Gaming Company, heh) and I've actually been doing ROM hacks on and off since about 1998 or 1999. In all that time, though, I've only really released four hacks. That's partially because I tend to keep these things to myself sometimes, but most of the time an idea just never gets off the ground and I abandon it for better or worse.
Let me put it this way. Would anybody really be clamoring for a hack based on a professional wrestler that the vast (VAST) majority of wrestling fans hate and is basically unknown to non-fans, especially if the game it's based on sucks anyway? 1.What draws you to the ROM hacking community? There are some really interesting hacks out there, and I'm just amazed at some of the stuff being done these days. It's also a nice way to make my own games without having to learn how to program. 2. Do you think playing/modifying hacked ROMs should be more user friendly? I guess it depends on how you define user friendly, but overall, I'm fine with ROM hacking as it is. It can be challenging and time consuming, sure, but that adds to the sense of pride when something particularly challenging and/or time consuming gets completed. 3.What are the advantages/disadvantages of ROM hacking vs. ripped sprites with code written from scratch? You don't have to do nearly as much actual programming with a ROM hack, but you're also kind of forced into following certain limitations. 4. Do you think there are limits to what people should be allowed to do with their games? Hah. I don't see the point in setting up some sort of authoritative content review board for ROM hacking, or even how it would be possible. What is there, really, to stop somebody from making yet another quicky adult hack? 5.What do you think about the future of the ROM hacking community? If present trends are any indication, there should continue to be some really nifty stuff getting released. Perhaps even niftier than what's out now. |

| As far as I saw, Youhei's editor was stable enough to handle changing text without damaging the ROM. You'll want to keep making backups while you're working with it, though. | |||

Personally, I didn't really care for the first game, but the second one had its moments. They must not've been very memorable, though, since I can't really remember them that well. ![]() |

| So what game are you using as the base for your Ranma 1/2 hack anyway? Going by the approximate size of the above sprite, and by there being two other playable characters, I'd guess Mighty Final Fight. |
