DANGEROUS MARIO LAND.

Watch out, this thread just went into total serious business lockdown. I'll download it and try, however...

1.) I can't hack worth a damn ( In my opinion, you shouldn't need to hack to make a good SMW ROM ), so I won't be giving any opinions on that subject.

2.) Fancy tiles and 'nice rips' do not make up a game, this will all be useless if your ROM isn't even fun to play.

All in all, I will try it. I just hope it's fun.

And yes, it's true. I don't have a SMW ROM of any kind out yet, but I plan to eventually.

2 b edited when i play de game lol.
-BRB-

RETURNED...

Stage 1 : "dangerous island 1":

Okay... This level should've been simply named "RANDOM". Not only was there floating mask things ( They didn't do anything, but still looked ridiculous. ), there was randomly shot-out-of-nowhere big Banzai Bill's, floating vines, and ... skydiving. This is one thing I really hate, you could've used coins or something to help guide the player to a piece of land, instead; I was left jumpg off cliffs and hoping to land on something enjoyable. This level gets a goodness-gracious 2/10.

Stage 2 : "Red Switch Palace":

Pitfall, anyone? This was a repetitive level of jumping across monsters onto used-coin blocks. 0/10 for not even -trying- to make a good Red Switch Palace.

Stage 3 : "dangerous island 2":

This was less annoying, but not really more enjoyable. The level was pretty short as well. 3/10

Stage 4 : "dangerous island 3":

Brilliant. Floating blocks over a gigantic hole where you must jump and jump carefully to make your way across. It must've been really hard to set up an ingenious concept like this. 1/10

Stage 5 :"dangerous island 4":

From snow to mushrooms. This is truly strange. All in all, this level gets a small prop for not being as much of a flop as the ones so far have been. Because I personally like icey levels, 4/10. This level is at a loss because of one major thing though.... Too easy.

Stage 6 : "dangerous catsle":

The dangerous CATSLE was actually too easy, but it was a breath of fresh air because it looked like you actually may have put some thought into this one. I don't mean to sound racist or anything, but the ending message really sounds asian-like. "You done chapter one! Now you find Princess! Save World! Luck Mario Good!" heh. I'll stop there before I get into trouble.

Stage 7 : "bowser island 1"

Well done, you've officially made me disgusted at the fact that you took an actual SMW level, and disguised it with your ignorance. 0/10

Stage 8 : "bowser island 2"

Somehow I managed to forget to put this one in the edit, I forgot about this level..somehow. Though the last thing I want to do is replay a level on this ROM, so... no rating.

Stage 9 : "bowser ghost house"

......... Thats all I can say here is "..." 1/10

Stage 10 : "very DANREROUS CAVE"

Very Danrerous indeed, this level was so tedious and frustrating that I quit playing the ROM altogethere here. Too hard? If you want me to admit it, sure. But it's mainly because the level was put together so poorly it was just sickening. You've ruined my love for ice levels, thanks alot. -10/10

Over-all rating: -2/10

Though I don't mean to sound like an asshole here, I will say that this ROM sucked. If it was your first try, good job on the hacks and all, but try to take more time with a level. It's good to have a ROM that's hard, but you have to make it fun as well. Throw in some "puzzles" so to speak, and you should do fine next time.

Well done, I'm not the kind to really care about rips. But you did this game ( in my opinion ) flawlessly. It gives the old-school feel perfectly, the levels are generally easy, some are generally hard in certain areas. It's very genuine. You could've fooled me into thinking you made SMB3 back in the day or something. I'm impressed, and I've only gotten to Mushroom Lagoon. My only complaint is the occasional laggy spots, but so far they're never enough to ruin my gameplay. Always a fun time with this one.

It's an addictive gameplay, where I said I'd quit for the night back in the Desert zone, and ended up playing level after level until finally I managed to pry myself away. 10/10

Edit: How could I forget to say this? Morton's Jail was pretty awesome. I loved the toadstool thing going on there, very nice. Can't wait to see what else you pulled out for this ROM.

CRITICISM, GO!

Okay, firstly. I'd have to say the little... 3D rock thing out infront of the ocean deal you got going on that one screenshot is total crap. You're mixing 2D sprites like Mario into a 3D environment, in my opinion. It's just plain ugly.

I know very well that SMW is a Super Nintendo game, why are you going out of your way to make it look like some sort of Playstation game?

My whole point is, sure. Alot of ROM's decide to add some 3D-ness to their SMW Hacks, but you're going a bit far with it. 3D backgrounds are ok, but the whole... 3D land you walk on thing is a bit much.

I'm not really sure how people can say how your ROM is something along the lines of "A ROM to end all ROMs" and how much you "own the internet" if nobodies even played it yet ( Or at least I don't think. I didn't see a demo link anywhere ). Judging a book by it's cover? Bad idea. I've played plenty of ROM's that looked promising, but otherwise sucked when it came to gameplay.

People who say how nice your ROM is and then say graphics don't make up the game are hypocrites. Enough of that though, I'm not trying to degrade your ROM, because god only knows almost everyone on this forum will beat me in fields of graphics, hacking, plotline, and level design altogether. I'm saying that.. I really really hope you don't decide to try this 3D trick on too many levels.

You get 10 points for eyecandy, thats about it.

peter_ac, I'd like to use your SMB3 rehaul on SMW, it says it's meant for a base on other hacks, but there's no way to download it. The download link leads me to this page for some reason, and your site is equally-as useless.

It's in the "Complete" section, so I was just wondering whats up with it?

I'm not into making my own gfx, just a game. And this caught my eye.

I remember playing a ROM ( I think it was SMB Deluxe? ) where the overworld was very SMB3-esque. Though it may seem plain, boring, and generic to some. I personally like the idea, so I was wondering if anyone could get me whats needed to make an overworld like that.

I'm pretty much new to the whole ASM, custom blocks, and all that ( For reference yes; I know the FAQ's for Newbies exists ) so I'd like my first hack to have a basic overworld. Making the overworld SMB3-like seems like a good way to start.

Thanks.

This also concerned me. I wanted most of my levels to be different ( and not just vary from world to world, but occasionally level to level ) but I wasn't sure if there was some kind of limit, and what that limit may be.

I knew it was unlocked, just not sure if he'd appreciate someone just going out and using it. ( i.e; Maybe he forgot to lock it ) but in that case, I'll base it off that. Thanks.

Well done man. This, somehow, inspires me to take up the arts of making custom things. No offense, but these aren't the kind of graphics that simply discourage me, they make me think "You know what? Ten dollars says I could do better". Again, no offense. Good job so far.

I know what I say doesn't impact much cause I don't have any hacks myself, but. I think the over-use of those blocks is a bad thing, it's OK to use them, but pretty plain to abuse them, if you get what I mean.

Yeah, people are going to be ROFLing out of their chairs when they see this one, I'm kinda embarassed to ask it.

How do I set the Calculator to Hexidecimal?

Yes, this is SMW related. I'm trying to use BlockTool. Thanks. =/

Edit: Found it out. For people who don't know; Set the Calculator to Scientific Mode. Dec to Hex.

Thats good thinking, just try not to shoot too high. I know I tend to do that, I go over levels multiple times to the point where it takes me 2-3 days to finish just one level, and even then I'm never satisfied. Though that might be because all of "elite" SMW ROMs I've played. =X

Anyway, this is good news for me too. Custom backgrounds don't bother me much, but the tiles....... =D

I have BlockTool, I'm not asking how to use it. I'm asking how to make my own graphics for blocks and such. For reference, no. It's not on the FAQ's for Newbies website.

Which program do I use for this?

As far as I know, this isn't the classic newbie question, but I'm preparing for "LOL JESUS...NOT AGAIN" anyway.

As much as I say that I'll make a ROM, I never actually tried until now, I decided to get serious, and see what kind of craziness I can pull up. First things first, an Overworld. I redid the Yoshi's Island place to a big grassland strictly for testing, do note that I won't be using this for my ROM, this is strictly testing.

Anyway...

My first problem is that.. Wether I beat a level or not, I'm able to goto all the levels without beating any of them. How do I make it where one must beat a level in order to proceed to the next?

My next problem is that, it seems that whenever I beat my first level, THIS happens:
http://img147.imageshack.us/my.php?image=atrap9xp.jpg

It may be hard to tell, but I wanted the path to the north of me to be revealed, instead, some weird...unknown path event happens to the left of me. I'm assuming this is an event problem, with that in mind, any idea how I do events?

For the love of god, if it's in the FAQ, just say it is, that's fine. I'll look harder. But the first question I would like to have an answer to other than "look @ faq"

Thanks alot.

I wanted to add ( BUT YAY NO EDIT BUTTON ) that I can't fnid out how to remove the smoke there, the smoke that was originally over Yoshi's House. Is it possible to remove it? Or must I just get creative with it?

As for events, I'm having trouble finding out how to set them by referring to the FAQ.

That proved useful, Simon. Now, is there any way I can edit the pallette colors for the overworld? Like maybe if I wanted the first area to be snowy. It seems like everything I try just leads it to be green grass anyway. =(
