| As a very casual hacker: (cheap plug http://classicgames.jordanbieber.com) I would get a lot of value out of your atomic IPS idea. IPS’s (or rough equivalents, as I see there are other ideas here) make hacking much more accessible; and since new hackers (and casual ones) wouldn’t have to relearn what has already be done, their hacking time would then be devoted entirely to new content. I really believe that this kind of knowledge sharing helps grow an online community. (I actually put together a small set of mix and match modular hacks for SMB1 on my site)
Can you imagine if DahrkDaiz made his SMB3 features modular (for example)? I would also suggest the concept of new baselines. How many times have we seen Zelda, Final Fantasy, or SMB hacks that seem like a hodge-podge because they are trying to update the graphics in a similar manner to what others have already done while simultaneously trying to make their unique hack. A new baseline would be a hack where the rom is updated such that all of the graphics are modernized and game improving features are added (for instance, the FF Water hack), but the basic game is the same. Although some people would still probably want to start from scratch with the original game, I think a great percentage would find value in having an alternative starting point like this. I have examples for SMB, Zelda, and Final Fantasy on my site. |

| These are some old board remnants. Anyone know where I can find the IPS patches for:
Super Mario 3 – makes you do the invincible star flip when jumping on a note block. Final Fantasy – B Button Dash Final Fantasy – Support for 5 letter character names Final Fantasy – Support for character “faces” on the menu screen |

| “Graphics only” isn’t the whole story. First, there are other changes that again do not affect the game per se, but modernize or add features that can universally be accepted as not straying from the classic gameplay. For instance, the Zelda hack has dungeon palettes hacked to improve the look, and also has the text updated to establish continuity with the modern Zelda games. Final Fantasy has a better translation from the Japanese version, as well as modular improvements such as Item shop bulk buying and moving water (if someone can get me 5 letter names and B Button dash that would be sweet).
Second: “Graphics only” can also mean “complete theme change” (i.e. turning Mario bros into Wario bros) whereas I think the baseline concept implies that the graphics makeover only spruces up the existing theme. For instance, my SMB and Zelda hacks have 100% complete graphics updates (SMB to a combo of SMB3 and SMW and Zelda to Zelda GBC), but Mario is still Mario, Goombas are still Goombas, and Bowser is still Bowser; just more modern looking. |

| Because it is a simple starting point. It has a small set of graphics to change and there are alot of tools to work with it. learn on SMB, move onto other games | |||

| The patch you speak of gives your SMB3 Mario, including jumping abilities; which does give you powers you don't have in the regular SMB1 game. The one I listed is just graphics, if that is what you are looking for. | |||

| Wondering if anyone who can help has a similar interest.
http://www.fortunecity.com/village/hancock/63/ Grond, who has established himself as “The Man” in Final Fantasy hacking has not only released a new version of FF++, but has also released what he calls his Balancing/Bugfix Hack. This hack doesn’t change the core game, but adds many slight modifications created by him and others that essentially cleans up the gameplay and makes it the same game- but better. It is great that he has made this available. People starting new hacks can instantly start with a new, better baseline. People who make other hacks can patch on these changes and suddenly all FF hacks can be better for it. Here is my question- There are a few other “improvements” that people have incorporated into their various hacks that are not in Grond’s new hack. Would/can anyone like to apply their ideas to make an even better baseline for the “hacking community”? Here are some things I have observed that I think would be cool: 1) 5 letter character names 2) Extended battle screen (no bar in between characters and enemies) 3) Revert to uncensored graphics and story/names from Japanese version 4) Status screen character “portraits” (as in FFIV and FFVI) 5) Grond’s cool world graphics from FF++ 6) Updated FF3 character graphics for some characters |

| Well that’s my point, actually. Does anyone have a better baseline than Grond? Probably not. But does your baseline have any cool features that Grond’s doesn’t? Combine your unique tricks with what he has and the FF hacking world will have a new baseline that is even better. | |||

| Hey it did almost work. The only bug I can find is some of the letters are missing in the character naming interface.
They combine for a pretty comprehensive baseline. Just ahve to fix those letters. |

| Draw from the other games – we’ve seen these all before but not all in the same game, and not in SMB3:
Poison Mushrooms Vegetables POW Blocks Super Cape Yoshi Superballs from Mario Land Winged Hat/Metal/Invisible from Mario 64 The Water Pack from SMS |

| Just a concept I thought of regarding hacking Zelda 1 – maybe someone knows something about it, maybe someone wants to run with it:
There are different world and dungeon layouts for the first and second quest right? Is an ASM hack possible that would break the model of first quest onto second quest and instead make them 2 different worlds you could switch in between (sort of like light world dark world in Zelda 3). I thought perhaps the whistle may be a way to do it – have it take you to the other quest rather than to another screen in the same quest. |

| Supposedly there is an easy method for changing a US Metroid rom so that it supports SRAM saving like on the FDS version. Anyone know about this? | |||

| Shameless plug alert: We have a new free software called Camtroller. You can configure it to use a web cam to control PC games – including emulators. Combine this with the likes of SNES9x or Project64 (with keyboard plugin) and you essentially have a EyeToy for those systems. (Pretty fun to try with Super Punch Out or Mario/Zelda 64)

| PROPOSAL:
Build an “ultimate” Super Mario 3 for NES hack using the combined knowledge of the “rom hacking community”. BACKGROUND: With tools today such as SMB3 Workshop and Map Editor, any yahoo can make their own levels, and with some effort they can even make good ones. People have also done their own ASM hacks to create brand new power ups, enemies, and other things from their imagination. This hack would not be about creating new stuff. This hack would be about fusing together old stuff. This hack would be about combining the best of the best (or perhaps iconic) enemies, levels, and features (wherever possible) from all Mario games into the NES SMB3. WHY NES SMB3?: SMB3 seems to be in a “sweet spot”. SMB1 has more hack knowledge around it but is too simplistic to implement much new stuff. SMW is more advanced but seems less accessible based on the hacks out there on the net. NES games also seem to have more utility outside of PC emulators (for instance, PocketNES, creating NES carts, etc) WHAT WILL BE CHANGED: The intent is to bring together the best of the best from other Mario games. I have a list of features here. I believe that all are attainable (because I have seen most of them done). I will note if something has already been done by me or provided by someone else. Basically, this hack will have everything that can be done by me or collected from experts around the “rom hacking community”. LEVEL EDITING: Because the intent is to make this a combination of all Mario games I would suggest 2 versions of the finished ROM: 1) Version with no level changes so that users can apply it to their own level hacks (bearing in mind that level editing is now accessible to everyone) 2) Version with levels that summarize each main Mario game, taking the first and best levels from each game using the ultimate Mario 3 engine. World 1: Super Mario 1 (DONE) World 2: Super Mario 2U World 3: Super Mario 3 (Maybe the lost levels) World 4: Super Mario World World 5: Super Mario Land World 6: Super Mario Land 2 World 7: Super Mario 2J World 8: ?? New SMB? Yoshi’s Island?, maybe a 2D representation of Mario 64? Hammer Bros Levels – Made into single screen Mario game levels – Donkey Kong, DK Jr, Mario Bros, Maybe some from Gameboy DK. Some of this is done. GRAPHICS: Most of the graphics will be updated to Yoshi’s Island style (where possible), some to SMW, and some may be changed to fit in the SMB2U levels. Some of this is done. FEATURES: 1)Choose Mario or Luigi – This has been done to the extreme in Mario Adventure 2 (Both have different faces). It could also be done to a lesser extent (same faces, different colors/jumps ala SMB2J). It would be good to package that feature so it could be applied to this and other hacks. 2)Spin Jump – Ala Super Mario Land 2. Perhaps done by hacking the tail spin move? 3)Ground Pound – Ala SM64. Maybe a variation of the Tanooki Statue routine? 4)Coins from fried enemies – Ala SMW. I saw this done in MA2 I think 5)Spin jump off of note block – Saw this patch a long time ago –I know it’s not fodder but would be fun to include. POWER UPS: It may be fine to have these replace/alter more obscure suits rather than expand the rom. 1)Blue Shell – ala New SMB. I just saw this recently posted for another hack 2)Cape (DONE)– ala SMW. 3)Yoshi – ala SMW, although a full featured Yoshi may be impossible, would be nice to get the visual with some type of function (maybe a Shoe replacement?) 4)Vegetables(DONE) – ala SMB2U pull grass and throw vegetable (not a suit). 5) Poison Mushrooms - ala SMB2J ENEMIES: SMB3 has perhaps the most classic/iconic lineup so there won’t be a huge overhaul, have just a few additions and changes: 1)SHYGUY (DONE) -SMB2U 2)SNIFIT (DONE)–SMB2U 3)SHELLCREEPER (DONE)–MB (for the 2 player battle) 4)BABY BOWSER (DONE)– Just an update to Boom Boom 5)DK – Probably just an update to Sledge Bro MUSIC: Seems to be the least knowledge around this so I am not really planning any changes. If you know how to (assuming it is changing it to other themes in the series) then we’d be happy to hear from you. SOUNDS GOOD HOW CAN I HELP?: Contribute ideas, levels and especially functionality pieces! Graphics, text, etc. I can handle. Some ASM hacking and tweaking I can muddle through but I am no DD. Putting your feature/change in ips patch format would probably be best so my feeble brain can use it. Based on what I can do - this hack WILL eventually be done with the levels, graphics, enemies, and some of the power ups and features but how soon and how many may depend on the benevolence and community spirit of experts like you. WHAT DO I GET OUT OF IT?: The rom hack will be publicly available (probably on romhacking.net) when finished. I will keep track of contributors. Of course, this is rom hacking, not a road to riches and fame. You’ll get generally the same thing you get out of doing any rom hack – fun of playing, fun of doing. Maybe some fun of community collaboration too? I will post demos, updates when there is a little more to go with. (edited by biejor on 05-19-06 03:40 PM) |
