Drew, is there a specific version of SNES9x that you need to use? I've got both 1.41 and Evil Peer's 1.43 (other versions screw up my controller), and both have the same bug:

When you enter the area 7 blocks down and 8 blocks to the right, measuring from Samus' ship, the graphics are thoroughly glitched and since you've fallen into a hole, there's no way of going back out the door you came in through.

This is with the headered version.

Dr. Death, now that you've got everything basically set up, you'll want to run some simulated games to test out the balance among the teams you're making. Since you're doing all MLB teams, see if any of them finish with winning percentages over .600 or under .400, and if so, adjust their abilities.

In my hack, I planned it so that there were four pairs of teams, each pair having a small gap between the two teams. I wanted to get rid of the really large gaps between each of the good teams in the original.

Have you looked at the Excel sheet I made?

http://www.geocities.com/heiankyo794/BBSstatsheet.xls

You can paste the raw data from the ROM and see all kinds of stats, not just the top 10. This was really useful in rounding out my computer teams' abilities.

Make sure your Excel has the HEX2DEC function included; if not, you need to activate it.

Amanda, how long did it take you to finish? It's taking me quite a long time -- I must be 25 hours into it, and I'm still in what looks like the beginning. (Rianna has joined the squad.)

The problem is that I can't keep track of what attacks are used by what enemies, so I always fight in Shura (standard) mode.

When I finish FFXII and my second Vagrant Story run, I might go back to this game and see if I can make some more progress. This game deserves to be finished!

Whoa, that's quick!

Did you edit any of the playee-management stuff like salaries?

If you left that stuff intact, then rookies will be a bit expensive and veterans cheaper. Makes things a lot more balanced when building up a team.

I never did figure out how to edit the money distributed in vs. mode, though, so if, say, your first computer team is really weak, they're still going to pay out as if they were the Dreams if you play them in versus.

Dragonsbrethren, I see you inserted the GBA font instead of the classic Chicago font. I always liked Chicago, but I must admit that the new one looks good too.

What would really look excellent would be to insert the custom font used in the German translation. Now that looks great -- if you haven't seen it, I'll put together a screenshot.

Dr. Death, are you sure you patched this right?

IPS tells me that the file has been patched correctly, but when I load the game, I get the original Baseball Stars. Should I base this patch on the original game or on my variation?

(Edit: I applied this patch to the latest version of my game, and it resets it back to the original game! Bizarre. How exactly should I patch this?)

Dr. Death, I downloaded it and it works perfectly!

I'm running a simulated league, just watching these computer teams go at it (at 60x normal speed) and it looks great!

Some comments and criticisms (so far):

* The Cardinals have block-red uniforms. You need to put a darker red in for the shadows so that their batters look 3D. I think the darker red is color 07. Also, Oakland seems to have a lighter color for the shadows, so it looks weird. Reverse the two greens and the A's will look a little better.

* Same for the block-blue of Chicago.

* The Mets' hats look more pink than orange. The purple tint to their uniforms really captures those practice uniforms they wear perfectly, though.

* Love the scoreboard messages!

* What's the theme for the team with some RPG characters (Terra, Magus, etc.) in it?

* I see you kept the Metroid-logo custom team with the Samus Aran-like uniforms; good to see considering how many Metroid fans there are out there!

* Finally -- it sure is nice seeing guys like D-Lee and Wood in the lineup for Chicago -- the team is hopeless without them!

About to make my own team!

Well, the league I'm running is proving to be really balanced (Yankees are the only exception) and while the offense is higher than in my game, it should be a good challenge to put one's own team up against these squads.

Watching the Cubs, I notice that Freddie Bynum is often put in to replace Lee at first; maybe you could switch the names of Bynum and Mabry so that at least it's another 1B who's going in.

The Giants have a nice orange color; just repeat that for the Mets.

Also, why not change the title screen so that your hack has its own title?

DB, any chance you could turn the tilde that separates the HP and the max HP back into a proper slash? Never understood why Square changed it to begin with.

Also, how realistic would it be to get the customization of Cyan's Sword Techs back in? The Japanese version had it.

DD, when you run leagues, do you watch the games or not?

If you don't watch the games, the computer takes all kinds of shortcuts that distort the stats. For one thing, there are no batting substitutions -- the nine guys in each team's starting lineup, including pitchers, are in there for the whole game (which means, theoretically, that this could be revealed in the post-game summary if a pitcher who's been removed could hit a game-winning homer to get the win for his reliever).

Thus, the bench guys never play, so no matter how much talent is there, it never gets reflected. Also, since subs are usually weaker hitters, the game is biased in favor of offense if you don't watch. And in general the gap between strong and weak teams seems to be intensified -- when you watch, some of those wimpy rookies' hits will find holes and they can pull off some upsets.

When testing my game, I used NesterJ (which has a great speed-up function) to watch every single game in a 125-game season. Each one takes one to two minutes at full throttle.

League standings as of now, with all the games having been watched:

Mets 8-2 .800
Yankees 8-3 .727
Cubs 7-5 .636
Giants 4-6 .400
A's 2-7 .222
Cards 2-7 .222

I think I'll let this run for another half an hour or so and see what happens. Really the only thing I have to do is click over to the little NesterJ window and hit the A button a few times. The games zip right by.

I've been thinking about the colors a little more -- how about yellow/gold caps for the A's? And dark blue for the Cards, like they actually wear on the road? The white hats and shoes don't look as good as other colors might.

There really is a lot of offense on the Yankees and Mets -- their opponents are posting ERAs of 5, 6, 7 and more.

More data from the league:

BA leader: Giambi .556, Lee .523, Chavez .500, Beltran .480, Rolen .468

HR: Delgado 13, Sheffield 12, Pujols 12, Bonds 11, Chavez 11

RBI: Pujols 30, Chavez 23, Delgado 22, Ramirez 19, Sheffield 18

ERA: Dempster 1.38, Sanchez 1.50, Rivera 2.25, Worrell 2.81, Wagner 2.86

Wins: Johnson 4, Zambrano/Cain/Pedro/V. Zambrano 3

Saves: Many with 2

That deep blue background for the text boxes looks great!

Could the numbers be one pixel taller? They look a bit small.

Did you add more MagiTek abilities?

DD, if I knew enough ASM to do what you suggest, I would have done it. It's definitely something this game needs, as is a toning down of the raw power of 15-rated batters. The ludicrous number of home runs is the one thing I don't like about Baseball Stars.

The Cubs are now on a bit of a roll (no injuries in this game!) and have moved into a tie for second. Oakland is bringing up the rear.

And one error: SF's pitcher Cain is female when he bats!

Yeah, dump that useless chocobo background and insert something with some flavor. I always liked the "burnished copper" metal plates used in Chrono Trigger.

The numbers with descenders look nice but I still think they could be one pixel taller. Not a problem if you don't agree, though; it still looks better than most games' fonts. And the slash looks much better!

Are youn going to edit any of the minor translation mistakes, such as the "frightful dragon" and the "treasure under the stairway"?

Season in full swimg; the Mets are unbelievably good at 22-5. The Cubs have had a resurgence and are chasing the Yankees for second, with Lee leading their team in homers.

Yankees just won a game that winners tend to get once in a while -- 4 in the bottom of the 9th to take down St. Louis after not scoring for six innings in a row!

I've done lots of font hacking and have made several new fonts for games.

Specifically, I made two new 16x16 fonts for Baseball Stars, slightly edited the 8x16 and 8x8 fonts in that game, made a new 8x16 font for F-Zero that looks like the one used to display speed in the original game, and then also fiddled with the two-digit font in Bases Loaded.

Also had a stab at making an 8x8 font taht looks like handwriting (for Baseball Stars 2) but it looks pretty awful.

I actually tried to make a blank ROM with noting but font graphic data but TLP kept crashing on me. Maybe I'll just post them as graphic files.

Dragonsbrethren, I like your cabin much more. Viewing it edge-on fits in perfectly with the tent graphic.

As for the text backgrounds, I don't have the numbers memorized so I'll have to load up the game again.

The ones I remember liking were the basic (default) gradient, the black-and-blue "watery" one, the "wood" one, and one of the other metallic looking ones.

What would be really great is if you could change the color of not just the font, but the shadow (below and to the right of the text) as well. When I first played FF3, I was trying to get the text to be dark on a light background, but since the shadow is black no matter what you do, it never looks right. Let us make the shadow a different color!

DD, you could do that, but then someone making their own team wouldn't have any challenge anymore, since the ability to make 15-rated batters will always be there even if the computer doesn't offer any.

What needs to happen is that someone with ASM knowledge has to find out how to reduce the batters' power by about 20%. It's the one giant flaw in this and almost every baseball video game from that era (with the notable exception of Bases Loaded, US edition).

The weak pitching just snowballs -- you give up a lot of runs and tire out your pitchers, so they're all exhausted for the next game, and then of course they can't get anybody out.

Maybe the producers thought that beginners would only enjoy baseball video games if the scores were 11-10 every time, I dunno. Everything else is fine or close to it (a 15-stamina guy can throw a CG if he makes people swing at the first pitch); just cut out all the homers!

Hey Skie, that avatar of yours reminds me of my futile attempts to hack Powerful Pro Baseball. It really is an excellent series and deserves to be put into English, but the data in the one I looked at was all compressed and I couldn't get anything out of it.
