This should be beaten easily, but:
The Sims > Pound Sterling > World War II > Democratization > Pointy Haired Boss Took advantage of that pound sign in the Sims price tag! |

I hadn't thought of using years! That should be a good shortcut.

Cinnamon > Library of Alexandria > Library > Librarian > Hogwarts
4 steps (with three of them being almost trivially similar)! |

People won't get "modding" (=modification, of games) confused with "modding" (=moderation, of posts); they're two different words and apply to two different things.

Smallhacker, you are right; Cinnamon links to Alexandria, which in turn links to the Library of Alexandria. As soon as I saw "Alexandria" on the Crayfish page, I thought, 'Alexandria's got a library; Hogwarts has one too; there's my angle!" It worked but I should have been more careful!
As for this one: Crayfish > Europe > Octopus > Octopus (disambiguation) > From Russia with Love (video game) The word "European" on the Crayfish page links to "Europe". (Grumble... stupid disambiguation pages... that should be a three-stepper!) |

Originally posted by RyogaMasaki I've found it fairly easy to tell when a Japanese person has a specific English-sounding word in mind but spells it wrong, especially when trying to use sounds that Japanese doesn't distinguish, such as with "Silvard" ('er' and 'ar' are unutterable in Japanese). As easy as it is to criticize such mistakes, they're not half as bad as the pathetic-sounding pseudo-Asian names invented by western authors who don't do their research. When translating such work into Asian languages, the translators face the conundrum of changing the pseudo-name into something more realistic, or letting the mistake remain and making the book/film look truly stupid. (And here I'm thinking of "Mr. Yakamoto" in Minority Report and "Tagomi" in The Man in the High Castle.) When the original writer has clearly botched it, the translator should get to make some pre-emptive changes. Ted did fine with Zeal, Kajar (though I think there's a real "Kajal" in the world), Truce, Guardia, etc. |

Gotta get back on track here!
This is pathetic, but: Idiot -> 2005 -> 2000s -> Jack Thompson |

My God, that's a beautiful idea you've got going!
How about using a Mario sprite normally, but then -- as a power-up -- making use of those little triangular blocks that let Pac-Mario (for this is what we must call him) sprint vertically up a wall? Then you could alternate between Mario-style platform jumping and Pac-Man-style "grab dots by turning in four directions" running. Of course you'd have to cleverly manipulate Mario and Pac-Mario to obtain all the dots. |

Whoops, I typed an entry as Synthrax was updating. Strike that.
So there's an O, but no I, E, U, or Y? Presumably there's an A in there somewhere. (edited by Heian-794 on 01-28-06 11:12 AM) |

That Y in NUTTY is blue? It sure looks white to me! (My PC has sub-pixel rendering which makes the letters sharper but the colors less definite.)
Nylon was going to be my guess until I saw that there was no Y! |

Super Gussun Oyoyo is a classic!
Anxiously awaiting your translation, Ryoga. (Which reminds me... I need to make some progress on that Chrono Trigger script I'm working on for Zeality...) |

I love that original font you used -- any chance of bringing that back with a different 3-color gradient that doesn't clash with the sky? Maybe use two shades of pale blue for the body of the letters and then a black shadow below and to the right of it -- that could probably be read no matter what the background was.
The Zelda II font that you're using isn't bad, but the fact that the numbers are 6 pixels high whereas the letters are 7 pixels high keeps annoying me. Your version is much better. |
