It can be done with a hex editor, but it would take ages to find where the music is located, see what format it's in, figure how editing it does what, ect, ect. Plus, the type of game that you're editing really does matter.

Speaking of whih, ca you be a bit more exact then "games" in general? I know that progress has been made with Sonic 1 and 2 music hacking to the point where utilities are available, and Sonic 3 has been done. I've no doubt that Mario games have had research in the music category at this point. But saying you want to hack the music in games is like saying I want to give my cat pet food, without specifying what pet food.

I really wasn't trying to be funny. That was as accurate as it gets.

It's not nearly that simple to just get the hex for a song and to stick it into the ROM at a certain location. Something tells me that your new to hacking, so why don't you just start with the basics for now. Music editing is only tried by the veterans, and only succeeded at by the more intelligent of said veterans. Work on level editing and palette changes first, then focus on using hex to edit more technical aspects of games. It's like the steps of a ladder, you can't just skip one.

And I'm sorry, but something tells me that you took my old sig and edited slightly, then stuck it in your own.

Those teal blocks in the first pic look a little too... teal. Perhaps a darker shade would make them look better. Also, the brown rocks you got in the floor tiles might look better at a more red shade. Am I correct in thinking you got those from TLoZ?

Otherwise, good work. Editing the lighter shade the text goes to into something that's still different then the blu but of a darker shade might work as well.

Perhaps he means an English version of Final Mix? it seems like something they would release in English a year after the sequel made its way here, the bastards. However, I'm one to believe that we'll never get to see that version of KH in the US. Not because of the effort needed to translate it into English (hell, all the extra scenes with voice overs were done with the English actors), but just due to the sense of "So, you American's think you can out due us by adding Sephiroth as a boss? Well hah! Now we add this "unknown", henceforth screwing around with your heads, as well as your wifes, children, and old mothers!"

On another note, who wants to bet that a Final Mix of KH2 will fly up out of nowhere and magically land on Tokyo's store shelves next year? =/

All data found in hex is used for something. Even deleting a string of hex to no seen result may have drastic changes in the gameplay of the ROM. An example is that you can change the value of hex in Sonic 1 to change the number of hits it would take to defeat the boss, or change a monitors properties. Does that mean that it will affect basic gameplay? No, but when it comes to those parts, things will be different.

And just predicting future complaints here, don't delete a string of hex, see it as nothing happening, then continue with hacking that same ROM. That's an official screw-you-over signed by Satan himself.

If it's a SMW hack, then posting this same question in the Mario hacking forum might yield faster results. And .smc files are ROMs as I recall, so yes. I do believe that some point in hacking a ROM, you'll need a ROM to hack.

And am I the only one noticing how eerily similar this is to Crayola's topic? =P

It's a good approach, albeit one that requires mucho, err... patienceo. But using a corruptor might be more beneficeo, si?As quoted from Senor BGNG's hacking guide:

Favorable Hacknig Technique #4: Corrupt the ROM
A corrupter is a program that can set a region of a ROM to a given value. For example: It can set all bytes from 0x00A0 to 0x00B0 to the value 0x78. Using one of these can help find resource data. Just change some bytes and load the resulting ROM in an emulator. Did your resource change? Then the bytes you changed are in part a part of the resource.

BONUS: Favorable Hacking Technique #4½: Binary Elimination via Corruption
Fancy words! You can exponentially locate resource data in a ROM by carefully corrupting the ROM. Start at the end and work your way to the beginning, since game program data is typically at the beginning of the ROM. Set the entire second half of the ROM to 0x00 using a corrupter. Load the result in an emulator. If your resource did not change, then you know that it is in the first half of the ROM and you can repeat the process. If your resource did change, then you know that it is in the second half of the ROM and you can repeat the process. It's a win/win!

So if you do this and the music playing for level A is he music supposed to be playing for level B, that's a bueno start. And don't bother correcting my Espanol, I don't know the stuff. I only take Latin.

I'm betting 20 exp pts, 300 gill, and a fire ring that within the next five posts, someone's gonna post how great it is that Futurama's coming back without having read the thread. =P

It's a shame, though. The show really did have a sucky run on Fox, but Adult Swim used it as a primary cash cow for how long? Personally, I'm fine with the show being canceled before it could degrade along with the Simpsons. Although I wouldn't mind that whole story about the brains and Nibbler's species being explained once and for all (they sort of left it at a high point with Leela being some sort of "other one"). Oh, and more Bender with the exclusion of Simpson's cameos would be nice.

They didn't get to keep FFX: Eternal Calm, though. =P

It seems to have become a bit of a Squaresoft/Enix tradition at this point. I honestly expect it about 6 months after the American release.

Wow, you certainly de-virginized that post. =/

Making a bit of a smaller post then that, one can't really sum up the argument of "These mods suck, flaming and criticism aren't the same thing, what justifies a topic close, blah blah blah". It's just way to complicated to work with like that. It would be going with the presumption that only one person here has the mod/admin power, and that's complete bullshit.

Every forum has its own moderator(s), and each one has their own preference for what goes along with the rules or not. For instance, one might type in something off topic in the anime forum and it will slide by the detectors as OK. But pull the same stunt in RPG discussion and you know it's going to be deleted unless theirs valid on-topicness involved.

You all have been arguing with eachother over these points, and that both raises the validility for this topic and the pointlessness of it at the same time. This shows that yes, there are problems with the way things work on the forums or no, there is nothing wrong. And this also shows the differing views held by the different members of the community, and proves that the summary of how the community acts to the breaking of rules as one message is complete and utter falsehoods.

So you guys can keep saying to eachother that flaming is alright, or it's nothing but negative, or whatever. Hell, this post can probably be seen as off topic in itself. But I see this as a main point in the background of this entire argument that everyone's ignored, and it needed to be brought to attention.

Although with the n00b banning argument, I do feel that an opinion can be brought up from me that sort of relates to my previous typings. Some kids learn to improve over a period of time thanks to criticisms from other posters, but others just completely ignore what they say about grammar. And from what I've seen, the mods have done fine with accepting stupidity up to a certain point before initiating "DA BAN!!!" Did you see Mr. Anderson's posts? I do believe he is a main support for this idea.

You could play as Optimus Prime, Landmine, Jetfire, or Hot Shot (for Autobots), and Megatron, Starscream, Thundercracker, and Crumplezone (Decepticons)

Anything but that would generally be awsome to see in my opinion. =P

A LoZ:LTTP hack that includes new items. That would be awsome (and would most likely require some extensive ASM work).

But if you don't close this topic, you show that admins and mods can give a little slack, therefore nullifying half the points made in this argument, and henceforth, effectively disproving the whole need for an argument. But then, closing it after that, people might see it as being closed to early and that you proved their point for the need of an argument about this.

Let it sink in, you'll understand.

A new Mario RPG hack wouldn't be impossible to create. It would just take dedication and time from one person to an extent to make it near-impossible.

Ah, Megaman X and it's Street Fighter moves... classic.

It just occured to me that in Fullmetal Alchemist: Broken Angel, the fight at the end of the game that you don't necesarily have to win, the one against Mustang and Armstrong, was really difficult unless you were pimped out with cannon ammo and could keep the two tanks running. One at a time would have been impossable enough, but... god, it really was a challenge.

Yes they would, since these are for Gameshark emulators built into N64 emulators. Not that I would know, since the only system I ever got Gameshark for was Gameboy (got Mew, damnit!), but the concept is the same. And be careful about these codes ruining saved data on your cartridge.

Use Gameshark at your own risk, and my god I hope that isn't a power ranger avatar.

There's no doubt that shipments have already been broken into and either sold or used for personal entertainment. It's just the way it goes, and no matter how many store owners get busted for it, they keep on going.

I still highly encourage, and by that I mean that if I could I would force you, to get some mor experience with hex before jumping into music hacking. You said that your hacking Nightmare on Elm Street, right? Well, I don't know of any research done for hacking that game. And I'm sorry if I offend, but you really don't seem to know much of anything about hex. I suggest either:

A) Find a game to hack that already has utilities/guides/other people hacking.

It's just an intelligent thing to do if you're a beginner. You don't go off on your own unless you're perfectly prepared to do so. However, if you're still gonna go for it:

B) Do small stuff first.

Don't focus on music first, focus on learning where everything is. Try doing small things via hex, like tweaking palettes and messing up tiles. Get some experience with the small stuff, don' just barge in declaring your going for what is, considered to be by many, one of the hardest ROM hacking methods out there.
