Thanks It's still a little early for a demo... very few levels, and lots of things aren't done - like the title screen, intro, etc. And I'd like to advance more on the storyline before the first release.

I hope to introduce a couple of innovative ideas, and make the levels interactive -- for example, you can climb those trees and light poles.

Sure, if you need help on anything I'll try to help you.
I'm an artist, and some years ago I used to be a programmer... but that was a long time ago

Heh yes, you start with only one life. The first levels work as an intro you can play.

All the 'intro' levels are very easy, except for one where the girl's village is destroyed by tanks. That is a traumatic event that defines her future, so I thought it would be nice if the player had to pass that one HARD level with only one life... Then the difficulty level drops back and increases gradually.

And you don't get any powerups early on! You only get powerups when the girl grows up later in the story.

You're right Chris, I've been working for 3 or 4 months... and only have 4 levels
But things should go faster now that I have some GFX done.

I hope it will feel like a different game in the end, my main problem is the music, which is so SMW ... When Solar Soundtrack is released, I'll add all-new music.

BTW, the reason the backgrounds look simple is because of the way I'm using the 16x16 tiles and palettes... I have 6 map16 pages of 'building blocks' in different palettes. That means I don't get much space for specific, detailed objects, but I gain great flexibility. For example, you can use the building blocks I used for the tank to build a completely different object, like a plane or a truck, combining 6 palettes. It will not look as hot as other hacks, but will open up some gameplay possibilities.

You're right, I use fog as clouds, and to add more depth, because it moves in a different plane. But I'll try not to overuse it, or use it subtly.

The tank? It was nothing it's made out of 'building blocks' I made of different shapes.
Some details like the bolts and the 'X' are in the first layer.

Thanks for the compliments, they give me the motivation I need to continue.

I feel tempted to make an ips, but that would reveal a couple of little surprises, and it will be more enjoyable if they are presented at the right time.

This hack will not be locked, so people can use it as a base for their own work.

I agree with your point, but I'm not planning to improve on the graphics, for a simple reason: there are too little Map16 pages available. If I start using them up with complex graphics, I'll soon run out of them.

You're also right in that I'm using few colors. That's because my object palettes are meant to be exchangeable with each other. Each has 3 shades of a main color, 3 of a secondary color, 3 skin tones, 3 or 4 greys, etc. That has its pros and cons, but basically it allows me to have 6 sets of building blocks in different colors (which also take up 6 Map16 pages).

And I also like the idea of having some room for improvement for a sequel.

Thanks mikepjr! That's one of the nicest compliments I've received!

The people in this board are demanding, but they appreciate it when you put a lot of effort in your work. Coming here is like a breath of fresh air, compared with the envy and indifference I have to deal with in the comics community of my city.

I'm glad I could give you a boost of motivation, and I'm looking forward to see your new hacks!

Yes, the bullet was a glitch, it's fixed now.

Fixing the trees is a big problem, making them realistic would take considerable Map16 space that I'd rather use for other objects.

I think they look 'passable' with the cartoony look of the rest of the graphics, and in gameplay they work fine.

But yes, it's one of the first things to improve if I ever make a sequel, or maybe if when I finish the hack I have enough Map16 space left, I could fix it.

It's a great tip, I was aware of it (I discovered it when I found my page 2 was not available in other levels ^^;;

But the trees I made are climbable, so I need to change the gameplay settings as well.

I'm not really that tight on space yet, but I'm trying to make every tile count because I don't want to run into that problem later.

This is not really helpful, but I think 2bpp tiles use 8 4-color palettes, which start with color 0. The first color of the 4 in the palette is always transparent.

If the message text uses colors 09, 0A and 0B (08 is transparent), that is palette number 2 (hex). And if you want to use 19, 1A and 1B, that would be palette number 6.

But I don't know if there's a single byte that sets the palette for the whole text, or if each tile has its palette (like in the status bar editor). And most important, I don't know where they're stored.

Not really helpful, sorry

Ohhhh I see now, somebody else had commented about water in the sky.
I just got it. It's not water, it's smoke!

It's a level in a polluted industrial city. Might have to fix it, if 2 people saw water instead of smoke, it's not a coincidence.

BTW, what are those lines in the top of the screenshots? I captured it with ZSNES

I want to modify the "Locked door key" block from blocktool, so that the key disappears when you collect it.

I tried copying the code from the sensitive block, from the given offset until the next $60, but it freezes the game.

So what I need is to make the touched block disappear.

Can you help me? Thanks

The story is about a Chiaki, a girl who lives in a fishermen's village near the border with a rival country. War breaks out and her village is razed by bombers, armor and troops. She runs in panic and miraculously escapes, but is the only survivor.

Her village is destroyed, her family and friends are dead, so with nowhere to go she follows the road to the nearest town, where she wanders through the frozen streets until she collapses. Somebody takes her to a hospital, and when she recovers is taken to a orphanage.

But the children, many of whom lost relatives in the war, attack her because she has dark hair (a characteristic feature of the enemy country), so once again she's in danger.

She manages to escape, and is adopted by an old man who hopes to use her to impress women. He takes her to his home in the mountains. Years later, with time and hard work he teaches her discipline, and trains her in the Way of the Falling Leaf, a devastating martial art.

Then, she's contacted by the Royal Armed Forces, who see her as the perfect recruit for their special operations program. Her foreign looks would let her be unnoticed behind enemy lines, and her deadly skills would be essential for the war effort.

And so, Chiaki keeps looking for a meaning for her survival, to finally make a choice between forgetting and walking away, or coming back to take the most bitter revenge...

That's how the story begins.

Nice work!

If I'd change something it would be to use one more shade of color for the drapes

Looking good!

On-topic (Changing Mario with someone else):

I've made a little ASM routine that you might find very interesting... I'll give you all the details when I release the first demo of my hack.

Off-topic (Fav. tile editors)

I used to work with Tile Layer Pro with is great, but now I'm using MrClick's TileEd 0.54... You can edit sprites directly on the tile arranger. (But you can only open one file at a time)

Your hack's looking great!

Being picky, I'd try to blend the ground tiles from this screenshot better into each other:

It's no big deal really, only a detail to keep the pixel-perfect standard of the other screenshots.
Keep it up!
