There has been a change of web addresses. Go here to post your ratings: http://smwchampdepot.sourceforge.net/SMW_rating_tracker.php

What's your Super Mario World rating for Yoshi's Island 1?

Here's what to do:

Start up Super Mario World and record the # of lives that you initially have, this is l1. Enter Yoshi's island 1, pause the game and record the intial score, s1. Play through the level and try to score as many points and lives as you can in the shortest amount of time. As soon as you hit the gate with the big tape at the end of the level write down the score that you have at the end of the level, s2. Also record the amount of time you have left at the end of the level, t2. Finally, record how many lives Mario has at the end of the level, l2. Determine your rate by plugging in values for this equation:

rating = (t2+5)[(s2-s1)+(l2-l1)]

I got a rating of 11,198,272 for Yoshi's Island, can you beat it? Post your ratings.

Post your ratings here: smwchampdepot.sourceforge.net/SMW_rating_tracker.php. You don't even have to calculate the rating.

I have discovered a problem with the rating equation. There seems to be an unfair balance between the time at the end of the level and the score. To equalize things the equation should be something like this: rating=(t2+5)[((s2-s1)/[(t2+5)/100])+(l2-l1)]

Keep calculating your ratings the old way until I make sure that the rating equation is well balanced.

Ok, the new equation has been instated. The new score is calculated as: r=(t2+5)([(s2-s1)/100]+[l2-l1])

The URL of the tracker has been changed as well: [url]http://smwchampdepot.sourceforge.net/smw_rating_tracker.php

The old memory map location doesn't work. The link was not operational since yesterday.

I'm trying to tweak Super Mario World by locating tweak points. The problem is that I'm using addresses like: 7E0013 but these yield numbers in the millions and I know the Super Mario World ROM is not even a million bytes. What am I doing wrong and how should I interpret these memory map addresses? (Yes, I did get them from the memory map.)

In PAR format, the codes would look like this: xxxxxxyy, where x is the address and y is the value.

For example, 7E0013DA would lock address $7E:0013 at the value #$DA, or 218 in decimal.

If you wanted to change them with a custom block, for example, you'd need something like this:

LDA [value]
STA [address]
RTS

So let's say I'm opening up SMW.smc how would I use this address to locate stuff in the file itself? Would address 7E0013 be offset 0013 in the file itself?

No, but isn't the ROM file a snapshot of the RAM itself?

Let's try this again.

RAM, or Random Access Memory, is used by programs to temporarily store data.

The ROM (Read-Only Memory) is a copy of the program. A snapshot of the RAM would be a ZSNES save state file.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Check this out. I was tweaking the RAM of Super Mario World just after I took a snapshot of it. What I did was set Mario's x speed to 60 and weird stuff started happening after I reloaded the RAM. Mario was too hyper so he forgot to get Yoshi and ran into a Koopa and died. But that's not even part of the weirdness. Some strange music started playing when he died rather than the normal death music. Finally I was able to play the title screen. It's really short and has no end. There was no time limit and Mario's lives were set to P5. But don't take my word for it, give it a try. This is one of the weird things that I'm uncovering although it probably has been uncovered. Check out the memory map for the location of Mario's x speed.

These are some tools that I've been using to hack Super Mario World. I develop them as an alternative to a hex editor. You may find them useful. Whenever you need a tool just check out the depot: http://sourceforge.net/projects/smwchampdepot

Guys, take a look at the notes. That's the little book icon. To run the program correctly you must pass the name of the tweak point database (does not have to exist) and the name of the Super Mario World RAM file (snapshot of the SNES RAM when Super Mario World is running). Here is an example of how to run the Super Mario World tweaker: smw_tweaker SMW_addresses.zsnes SMW.zst

The .zsnes file extension for the tweak point database denotes that the database is oriented towards the ZSNES. So addresses will be calculated properly. One of the problems with this tool is that there is no documentation. I only put up notes on how to run it. I will put up documentation, I promise.

There is one important thing to know about entering addresses for tweak points. If you have an address 7E0013 enter 0013, leave out the 7E.

So far I have developed the tool towards my preferences but I have put it up for others to use. I do not know your preferences that's why I made it open source. If you have any questions let me know.

Hey, guys. Could you enter your ratings here: smwchampdepot.sourceforge.net/SMW_rating_tracker/tracker.php

That way I can compare my skills against your and you can do the same too. Perhaps there are some people so good and we don't know about it. What would a game tester at Nintendo be able to get as a rating? Does anyone dare to ask?

Posted on 12-16-05 01:14 PM, in Do you believe that science goes against religion? Link
I believe that people have the right to believe what they want as long as they do not bother people with their beliefs. I personally do not care for anything that is written by man such as book, scriptures, etc. Someone else's word is no better than mine. Anyways, that's what I think. Science is interesting but could very well be someone's interpretation just like religion could be. So for me to be religious or scientific I have to see the results myself not simply take someone's word for it. That's how I think.

Besides, the champ has his own religion... Super Mario World and his own science... studying Super Mario World.

Oh, and I'd love to see a score for Forest of Illusions 1. *snicker*

I'd kick their butt but I'd like to see a tester have a go at this. Can anyone convince someone from Nintendo to give it a try. I'll try Forest of Illusions 1 after I put down Butter Bridge.

In case you were wondering, I usually submit my first score, then hand calculate my next ~10 runs and submit the best one.

And they don't actually do the ghost runs, they construct a sequence of controller commands for them and record THAT. Like assisted speedrunning. Or at least that's what I've heard, dunno if I'm right.

I'm heading towards the Forest of Illusions. I'll put up some scores shortly.

Hey, also. Where can I give you zmv files for my tricks? I took one of the Wiggler Trick(tm), and I'm about to do one of castle #4... Because I'm awesome and need to share.

E-mail them to me: SMW_champion@hotmail.com. As soon as you send them to me I'll be sure to put them up. Good job in getting your high rating. You truely are a Super Mario World champion!
