| Hello gentleman, this is Nightcrawler. You may or may not have heard of me over the years.
My work mostly entails translation related ROMhacking. My personal page is Nightcrawler's Translation Corporation. I've been in the trade for about 10 years. But that's not what I'm here about. Anyway, I'm looking for a veteran on this end of the community that is both skilled at what he/she does and has been functional in the community for awhile. The reason is simple: http://www.romhacking.net I have been developing a website over the past several months that merges and surpasses content that used to be found on Romhacking.com/.org and The Whirlpool. Beyond that, this site's focus is to serve as a central news source and community site. We have many innovative features not found anywhere else. The entire backend was custom coded by me exclusively for a Romhacking site. We've got an open news system where the public can actually make the news post, a fully categorized and searchable database of documents, translations, and utilities, help wanted ads, community database and more. I would appreciate if you guys could read the about page; http://www.romhacking/net/?page=about for additional information. Right now, the page is slightly biased toward the translation side of the community because that's really all I've know. I'm looking for a veteran or two from THIS side of the community to become a staff member and help reprsent the pure non translation related romhacking community. We need help with a Getting Started section and anything else that your side of the community may need or want on the site. So, I formally invite you to please take a look at the website and the message board and what everything's all about and let me know if you're interested in helping out. NOTE: The site is NOT officially open yet, but all sections are up and functional. Feel free to sign up on the message board if you wish to pertake in any devlopment discussions. I really feel we've got some potential with this site to bring the community back together again. It is most likely going to be the next cornerstone of the community. Please don't spread the word too much. The site is still in a pre-launch phase and it's not quite finished and ready to handle the large userbase yet. |

| Thanks. I'm completely aware of all the XHTML issues. I mentioned how the site was not officially open yet. All pages will validate for launch. I am probably one of the biggest supporters of coding your web pages to meet the standards. So, do not worry. Everything will validate, that's for sure. It's currently a work in progress. A nearly work in progress, but still in progress. | |||

NetSplit /b]
Got any work in progress page of what you had going? I'm always looking for new idea to make the site the best it can be. No offense to you, but I'm only interested in having somebody on staff who really wants to be on staff and has a genuine interest in helping this site succeed. It seems like you don't have a genuine interest and that's ok. You don't have to be a staff member to contribute something to the site anytime you want. Anytime you want to throw out ideas or suggestion, the message board is always open and we're always listening. Gavin /b]
If you finish activating your account on the Romhacking.net board, I will send you a private message and we can discuss some things further. blackhole89 Hmm.. what an interesting acceptance or refusal. I'm not sure which it really was! hehe I know more than most how it can be when you take on a new project and others have to take a back seat. There's never enough time to do everything you want. I like to cycle through hobbies and projects and change that up with the occasional work a few minutes on several different projects. It sounds like you have too much on your plate already and aren't truely interested. As I told NetSplit, that's fine and you can always contribute whenever you want by dropping by the message board. |

Here's the newest ROMhacking site on the block. We are your source for a document and utility archive that goes beyond what ROMhacking.com ever had. We've also got a translation archive with all the information that was on the Whirlpool. We are also the new one stop news source for all your ROMhacking needs. You'll fine several innovative features on this site that can't be found anywhere else in the community. We've taken on the ambitious project of constructing a Community Database with all active ROMhackers and what they're doing(limited to Translation/Document/Utiliities at present until we get the Hacks section up in the next few weeks.) We've got an open news system where you guys can actually make the news updates yourself! The site is themeable and all archives are fully searchable. We've got a flourishing message board with open development discussions going on at all times so you the community can voice your opinion about where the site is going to a staff that actually cares and listens to the community! I won't bore you with a sales pitch or long speech. Head on the down to the site, take a look at the 'About this Site' section to get the big picture and see for yourself! It's time to rejuvenate the community! NOTE: THERE IS A HACKS SECTION IN THE WORKS SCHEDULED TO APPEAR IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS! Xkeeper - fixed link (edited by 00580IO on 12-24-05 02:38 AM) |

| What do you mean by memory map? I'm not familiar with that term as it applies to web pages. | |||
|

| And you'd like to see these on the site?
They are only really marginally useful if you ask me. RAM contents are always changing and while location xx may contain your HP during battle, it may not any other time in the game. How are cases where the same location can contain several different important variables depending on what code is being executed? Shouldn't the focus be on teaching a person how to find their own variables rather work that they may not even understand what to do with? Memory maps have the potential to confuse someone even more. Who's currently got a good archive of memory maps? I'd be interested in taking a look at some of them. Voice your opinion on the message board. If it draws a following from others, I would have no problem adding these types of documents to the site. |

| Thanks for the memory map archive links. I guess I can't argue that some of the information there is certainly useful for ROM hackers. Two issues really.
1. They aren't in a format suitable for adding to the site. Need some sort of document files or zipped HTML docs etc. 2. These sites are doing a decent job already. Wouldn't adding them to ROMhacking.net sort of hurt those sites? I do support those sites and have linked to them on the site. What are your thoughts? |

| Well, please don't make the mistake of associating us with the ROMhacking.com crew This site is completely new from the ground up and not associated with those who ran ROMhacking.com.
The only true link we have is Neil_ from when it used to be ROMhacking.org. He's on our staff. We did use the ROMhacking.com internet archive page as something to start with for rebuilding the database, but that's it. Unlike Inverse, we actually care about the site and community and activley update and maintain the site, AND have a positive attitude. We just want to get away from the negativity and lack of caring shadow that was shown from ROMhacking.com. That's not us. |

| Thanks. We've had plans in the works for awhile now to allow the public to also actually submit items to the database and/or actually submit changes etc.
One of the founding ideas of this site is to eliminate everybody having to rely on staff to do everything. That's a huge bottleneck and the cause of death for many sites. The news was just the first step in that direction. |

| I had promised a hacks section on ROMhacking.net and I'm going to deliver, but to get it right I'm going to need some assistance from those of you more familiar with hacks than I am. (I specialize in translations).
The section hasn't gone public yet, but here is a tenative fully functional preview of how it is going to look: http://www.romhacking.net/?page=hacks This section is for you guys. We don't have many of you in our community at ROMhacking.net and we'd like to get some of you over there. Our goal is to have a centralized place for everyone in the ROMhacking community to go to. So, what I need from you is: 1. Some feedback on what you think of the section so far and any opinions or suggestions you might that would make you want to come visit the site. 2. What hacks would like you to see in the database? Do you want only complete hacks? incomplete hacks? Penis Mario hacks? In progress hacks? You tell me. It would also be nice if you could point to some existing hack archives that you feel are good so I a.) know where to find the hacks you want and b.) can get an idea for existing sections you already think are good and visit. 3. What do you think about submitting your own hacks(and thus generating a page for it) to the database? It's actually a little bit of work because our database contains a good number of fields to fill in for your hack. I know people are lazy(in general) and I'm not sure how many people would be interested in taking the extra few minutes to do so. It would be subject to the approval process of the site of course to prevent abuse. With that said, help me help you! hehe Let's start up a new ACTIVE hack archive with hacks you don't want to see dissappear. What can I do to make you visit the site and become part of the community? |

Thanks for the constructive feedback. I guess that's what I will do. I will add categories of completion like I have the Translation section. I was a bit reluctant because personally, I only wanted to host completed hacks, but that's not what's best for the community. All good suggestions. Thanks. insectduel: What is your problem? First, It's not possible to contact the hack author of the majority of the hacks out there. FuSoYa happens to not be a part of that majority, however, I don't think he'd mind from few the times I spoke to him, and if he does, we'll remove it. Plain and simple. Go away. Dragonsbrethren: The screenshots fit neatly in one row if they are small. Also, what about any future hacks such as N64 hacks where screenshots are 640x480 in size? Or PC hacks etc.. Just because the majority of hacks are NES or SNES, doesn't mean they're all small. That's the main reason it's there. The same was done for the translations. It keeps all the screenshots the same size for the layout rather than the screenshot size reflecting the resolution of the console and being uncontrollable in layout. Sliver X: I addressed this on the ROMhacking.net board. I assume you're talking about the images here, right? Go check out the topic you made there on DXO2 there. Thanks for coming. At least somebody isn't predisposed to dislike something different and help it be better. Mega-Dog: You are totally missing the point of the site. We're moving away from the rely on the staff and instead rely on the community. And I must say for somebody who would come here and point out that editors are missing, yet NOT report them to the site or even here so we can FIX the problem, you are not a model community member. It's up the commmunity to submit news about new releases as well as let us know if an entry is wrong or outdated. It's ridiculous to expect a few staff members to keep THOUSANDS of total database entries on the site always up to date. What do you think we do, sit on the computer and visit hundreds of web pages everyday looking for updates? No.. people have to REPORT the news to us. Maybe the site isn't for people with your mentality of thinking. So, why don't you report what's missing or not up to date and we'll fix it and you'll have nothing to complain about? |

We are *NOT* the old ROMhacking.net/.org/.com. We're not associated in any way aside from having one staff member who used to be on board back then and some database refrences. I have personally started and constructed this site from the gound up and have no association with the people who ignored you then. In fact, I have already added the utilities you pointed out to us as well as a Bionic Commando one. You can't judge us based on them. We do care and we do take action as I have hopefully already demonstrated to you. When you release your two upcoming new editors in the works, please contact us via the 'Contact Staff' section or board.(The 'Submit News' section is only for making the actual news posts to display on the front page, and not for general comments or requests) or create your own news update to be posted on the site.
Do that and you can be sure your utilitie will be added to our site. Anyone who uses our Contact Staff form goes directly to a special forum viewable only by staff, so each submission is documented, not forgotten, and handled accordingly. And in most cases, we respond to the submitter to let them know what action was carried out. asdf Yes, I have already started working on some code to allow ordering by any column as is demonstrated by the 'Date' column right now(despite being ugly blue!) Because you can sort by category such as 'Complete' or 'Demo', I figure that will give the flexibility to appease people who only want Complete hacks like you and I and those who like Demos or other immature hacks. We can easily filter only complete hacks. Do you think that is acceptable? To be honest, I had considered a public voting or review system. You bring up some valid points over the problems that can occur with one. Rather than votes, how about public written reviews? This is a little later on though and won't be in place for the initial section launch. Golden Yoshi Everything on the site is subject to approval by staff and we would continue with such policy. It's the only way to filter out the crap and prevent abuse. Having a search option for 'Complete' or 'Demo' should be acceptable, correct? Don't forget you can weed out junk hacks by choosing that the hack must have Graphical, level, and sound hacked for example. |

Wait a minute.. I'm not really sure what you're saying here. You're suggesting we add a section or provision to the site to find patches that consist of bug fixes for the original ROMs? Is that right? That's an interesting idea. Point me in the direction of some of those patches and I will add a Bug Fix category to the site and add them! asdf So, you're pretty much advocating only complete patches or a rare exception for a demo be in the archive? That was my initial thoughts, but don't you think a good portion of the community might object to that? That was my thoughts. I received feedback from some others saying they would like to see all those countless Mario hacks in there as well as spoofs, demos etc.. |

Thanks for the links. Wow.. I didn't know there were so many bug fixes. I'm surprised people have spent so much time on fixing bugs in the original games. It's quite a job to add all of those. I think I'm going to add the section and then allow you or others to add them. I'm in the process now of allowing public submissions to the database that only pass by staff for approval. Once that is up, you can add those types of things yourself. xZeaLitYx It's certainly posible to tabulate views or downloads a hack gets, although I'd have to do the coding to do so. That's actually quite a bit of work. I'm not sure that would really do much. Only the most popular or well known hacks would be seen as they inherently be viewed most often. I agree with Dragonsbrethren that this would help out pushing other good hacks to the background. I think I am going to add user reviews(subject to approval as well to keep the crap out) and that's probably going to be it. Everything else just doesn't work well in my eyes. |

| Thanks to all who provided feedback in my previous topic. I took alot of your suggestions into consideration, and as promised, I have completed the section.
Furthermore, we have taken the next step with this section putting the power in the community's hands. We now allow PUBLIC submissions that will go straight into the database(assuming staff approves it) and create the page for the entry. No more waiting for somebody else to put hacks in the database. You can do it yourself. We are eliminating staff bottlenecks on this site. Not enough hacks in the database for you? Don't see your favorite hack there? Add them yourself. You don't have to be the hack author to add hacks! *NOTE: We are one of the only sites to my knowledge that is also excepting bug fix patches for original ROMS. Additional Information can be found at: http://www.romhacking.net |

| I assume everybody knows the site is back up now, right?
There were some subdomain issues and naturally the person that could resolve them was out of town for the long weekend. Eventually, we're going to end up doing this whole thing the right way and taking over the full domain and I will assume total control of the site. Right now I don't deal with the domain/DNS/server config(ie webmaster) portions of the site. I originally started it out this way because I didn't know how successful the site would be and didn't want to invest much in it up front until I found out how it would do. Don't worry, ROMhacking.net isn't going anywhere. I will NOT follow in the foot steps of ROMhacking.com. We also keep full backups of the site, so even if there was an unresolvable host problem, the site simply would need to be set up somewhere else. We also have a contingency plan in the event I dissapeared from the web for whatever reason. With that said, we could use a few more of you guys over there on our forums. Game editing type ROM hackers are still the minority over there as opposed to the translation guys. Our hacks database is growing daily. We've got about 70 hacks and that's with trying to keep all the poor quality hacks out. So if you haven't had a look since the section opened, there are many new additions. |

| I would consider hosting such large patches at ROMhacking.net IF any COMPLETE Mario64 hacks are ever released. The community has made it clear to me that they don't want to have demos or incomplete work in the archives there.
On a side note, what's up with these 'cat' extensions to the usernames? Lame. |
