| Alright, sent you an email with a number of prospects.
Monday night I'll be driving out to Detroit for a few days, so I won't be around much next week. If any of the things I've mentioned tickle your fancy, do please let me know before then so I can get you on your feet and running with any logistical questions out of the way by then ![]() |

Originally posted by Stifu This is not strictly true. I am aware of a few translation patches for Shodai, and I know the hacker who made them (indeed, he gave me his full blessing on this one, and even helped me out by showing me his notes.) The first patch he released was actually two patches; you were supposed to switch from one to the other halfway through. The second was maybe 70-80% complete, and featured huffman compression of the dialogue data. Rather than attempt to keep the rom within its original eight megabits, I tacked an extra couple of banks on to the end of it, putting my translation there with expanded name tables and virtually unlimited space for text. The tradeoff is that there's a lot of nothing after the two banks that contain the script, but hey, it looks really nice when played
Laxidman, the previous hacker, suffered repeated hardware failures and loss-of-files in relation to thi project. He still intends to complete his I believe, complete with Huffman compression of the dialogue, but hey, he knows full well that I've been working on my own version, so we certainly won't see a repeat of the AnusP Treasure of the Rudras fiasco. |

| Leave for detroit in like three hours. I should be sleeping right now :/
But yeah, Alpha wasn't on that list. Reason being, Tyria hopes to be done through stage 40 (of 68, all routes included) by this weekend. It's very much taken care of. |

| You basically want to do a relative search to determine how the dialogue is stored and generate a table file. Then you'll scan through the rom using a hex editor, noting where text begins and where it ends; following this, you'll use a text dumper like Romjuice to extract the text from the game.
Romjuice is a generic dumper. It's also open source, so it can be modified as necessary. some games won't like being dumped with a generic dumper, but that's just the way it goes... you can mod Romjuice (or something similar) to do what you need it to, or write your own. Transcription is worthless because the text is often stored out-of-order; your OCR suggestions will provide similar results. There's always going to be some element of human agency in the dumping of a script, whether it be the development of a custom app for a particular game or the utilization of a generic dumper like Romjuice. You can't expect a magic button that'll just make the text appear on your harddrive :p |

| Well, given that what I do is completely replace Japanese scripts with English ones, then yeah, for my purposes it is the best method.

The gameplay making up Dicing Knight is a queer combination of hectic action and roguelike strategy. When you first start the game, you have one dungeon to go after (that of the Lindwurm) and you have one slot for an Orb, although you won't have anything to put in it at first. After you complete the first dungeon you should have enough total experience to be level 2, and you can go after the next dungeon (and use the lottery ticket from the boss to acquire a powerup orb in a game of chance) and so the game progresses. Sure, it's simplistic in nature, but it's one hell of a lot of fun. You unlock another game mode for completing it, and there's a huge bonus dungeon as well. It's all randomly generated as most roguelikes are, but it removes a lot of the element of chance by running everything in realtime and giving you almost complete control over your destiny. All in all, Dicing Knight is a fantastic game, and is not to be missed! You can get the translation here. The translation is complete, but untested. Please let me know if there are any problems with it! Edit: Thanks for the fix. (edited by Gideon Zhi on 01-21-07 12:02 AM) (edited by Gideon Zhi on 01-21-07 12:08 AM) |

| What you really want is an original XBox, hacked with a custom dashboard, bigger harddrive, and XBox Media Center on it. The downside is that it can't play burned CD discs (problem with the drives, although it will read burned DVDs), but you -can- rig up a USB connector for flash drives, and you can FTP into it to transfer stuff to it. XBMC can play and display just about any audio/video/picture format imaginable (although multiframe GIF files do not animate) without the need for Microsoft's $20 DVD remote :p Plus, you can put all sorts of emulators and homebrew on the thing, not to mention playing commercial games from the harddrive can significantly cut down on load times. | It's a Wonderswan Color game.
The Japanese title is "Dicing Knight" :p It's a fairly recent dump I think (along with Judgment Silversword) so it might be kind of hard to find. |

| Speaking of games that religious nuts go batshit over, you might want to try Shin Megami Tensei 1 and 2. The final boss of the second is, quite literally, the Christian god.
Further, Front Mission: Gun Hazard is one of the best games I've worked on, hands down, in all respects from the story to the music to the graphics and gameplay. It's great. Madou Monogatari is cute and fun, and cute. Did I mention it's cute? The plot's nothing earthshattering (help Arle take her kindergarten final exam!) but the whole game is just adorable. Cyber Knight 1 and 2, especially 2, are neat fusions of RPG and strategy/RPG games with some really cool gameplay and upgrade systems going for them, although the graphics and sound in the first leave a bit to be desired. As far as Rudra goes, are you sure you're playing the latest version? The previous release of the patch left a lot to be desired. (edited by Gideon Zhi on 01-21-07 12:35 PM) |

| Just browse around until you find something interesting. Download random games whose name sounds cool. That's what I do; that's how I've found many of the 59 games I've released full translations for so far. | |||

God, this was a bitch to get working. These screenshots show off the following: --Successful decompression, replacement, and recompression of text --Implementation of two more forms of text encoding for space considerations (16-bit data reduced to 8-bit data, implementation of DTE to the text routine) --The successful forcing of the game into its 8x16 font routine over its 16x16 font routine --The successful relocation of the VRAM font-tile transfer table to the nether depths of ram (the table in its previous location could only accept 36-ish characters.) (The game, incidentally, is Ys 5.) (edited by Gideon Zhi on 01-22-07 02:55 PM) |
