| What i'm saying is just because Christianity in particular is rather settled down now, does'nt mean it cant eventually return to the way it was (very bloody), and when the church is in control of everything and the people are taught to blindly believe what the church tells them, it opens the doors to these sorts of things further down the road, which has happened repeatedly throughout history. When the church is kept out of political power, the likelyhood of such things happening goes down significantly... And no, just because there are other non-religious ways to have a genocide does not invalidate my point in the slightest, that would be like saying because people can die in tornados then hurricanes never cause deaths. The Nazis are not a great example of a non-religious group either, the information i have says they strongly believed god was on their side, in fact the neo-nazi groups of today are even highly religious and represent the extreme of the right-wing. The Catholic church sided with the Axis in WWII, no? | |||

Is it that i get more ridiculous, or that i'm speaking so much truth it just blows your mind and you cant take it
Christian groups in power have caused bloodbaths throughout history. We have the Spanish Inquisition, The Salem Witch Trials (notably less deaths, but still significant), various examples of native peoples being wiped off the planet for being non-christian, the crusades, etc. Even if there is no one dominant church today, that says nothing about the future, and there were multiple groups in the past and still this went on. The fractured groups could unite or one could start repressing the others. If i'm wrong about the catholic church in WWII, then why on earth did the Pope issue an apology about this a few years ago? |

| If i came off as anti-religious it was unintentional. I'm not anti-religion per se, though i am most definately anti-state-instituted religion. I'm very much against organized religion being in charge of people's lives. That said, someone praying or finding strength in a higher power is fine, so long as they dont take the next step of forcing their beliefs on other people. That's extremely dangerous and exactly the reason we have and need to have the seperation of church and state.
Historical examples of church-lead brutality on the "heathens" is not irrelevant, and never will be. Ignoring history is a path tread by fools and the willfully-ignorant. The only non-religious group i can think of which had a genocide of sorts was the communists, but they did'nt do it "in the name of atheism!", it was done by some corrupt leaders to wipe out the potential threats to their power. If you must insist that everything is a religion and their is no such thing as atheism, then you have to say it was done in the name of their religion, which i guess would be communism. And as far as there being no recent religion-motivated atrocities going on, i seem to recall that not too long ago a christian group was participating in ethnic cleansing on some muslims in east europe, and a muslim group is trying to wipe us out in the name of religion as we speak. I have'nt heard it so much in this discussion, but i've seen it in dozens of similar debates, where some religious person will insist that Atheism is just another type of religion, which is silly. On that topic though, there is no "forced atheism" going on in this country that i'm aware of. I've never once seen the government rushing into a church and arresting everyone for praying, or teaching the youth that there is no God (or Gods). Not supporting any one religion or set of religions is not the same as out-lawing them or "forcing atheism" on people. There is such a thing as neutrality, its not always "you're for us, or you're against us" (edited by Jomb on 03-25-06 07:16 PM) |

| Your argument could apply to video-games or any other recreational activity (there is no NEED to play PS2, it just wastes hours of your life!)
I have no interest in smoking marijuana, and i never have, but i stand up for it because i'm against the government getting involved in our lifes unless its really important, and i believe people should be free to make their own minds up about life and how they want to live it. Marijuana does less to ruin lives than alchohol, which is legal, therefore it should be legal, or alchohol should be illegal. Having it illegal while alchohol is not is hypocritical. |

| I think the companies are somewhat (though not entirely) to blame, for marketing an item which is known to be highly addictive and also deadly at the same time. Why dont they use their billions of dollars to make a non-addictive cigarette? Greed... | |||

| But its often-times clandestinely marketed to minors who then get hooked on the addictiveness of it. If i only had a dollar for every person i've known who wanted to quit, but simply lacked the will-power to beat the addiction.... | |||

| The question should'nt be "Why make it legal?" The question should be "Why is it illegal?". When it comes to personal rights and freedoms, freedom should be the default state of affairs unless there are damn good reasons to infringe or take away the rights of the people. I'm not advocating that you be taken somewhere and forced to use marijuana recreationally, i'm only advocating that for a drug with such minor side effects and actually some benefits, that it be legal for people to enjoy risk-free in the privacy of their own homes. You dont want to do it, then dont involve yourself with it, no big deal. Whats next? Make white lies illegal? Cheating on your BF/GF? Eating fast food? None of those things are good, and can hurt people, but making them crimes would be ridiculous. Economics make a very poor basis for a value system. The government could make tons of money by simply writing laws making it legal to take valuables away from the citizens, but that would'nt make it the right thing to do. I've personally suffered great losses due to alchohol and nicotine, but that does'nt mean it'd be better if possession of alchohol were made a felony carrying huge penalties. That would just ruin even more lives. | |||

| By the argument that marijuana or alchohol should be outlawed because of drunk driving, then so should sleepiness, cell phones, etc. because these things could conceivably impair you and cause an accident. But why not take it one step further, accidents keep happening with automobiles, people are dying. So why not get right to the root of the problem and make vehicles of all sorts illegal? Spouses sometimes kill each other, so lets make it illegal to get married or to cohabitate. Pet dogs sometimes go berzerk and kill someone, so lets make dog ownership illegal and put all dogs to sleep. Once in a long while someone dies from taking over-the-counter medicine, so lets get rid of it all. Life is just too dangerous, people are dying, so lets make pregnancy illegal, afterall its really murder bringing a child into the world knowing it will one-day die.
Enough silliness? Obviously life will never be perfectly safe, and making everything illegal is not the answer. Make the things which cause clear and direct harm to someone else or their property illegal, and make the punishments fit the crime, not be over-the-deep-end knee jerk reactions, and leave it at that. Teach people to be responsible in whatever they do, and live life understanding that life is full of risks and they can never be completely eliminated. |

| Just imagine your psychotic and vindictive ex-GF using this on you for revenge!
Actually though, many of the worst rapists/serial killers were also highly masochistic and might actually enjoy the pain. |

| I think most serious rapists (not counting drunken sex or bullshit statutory stuff) just might be moved to murder if their penis was severely injured, and if it was'nt severe then many of them would probably like it. I read once that many serial killers did such things as poke needles through their testicles and keep them their all day long because they enjoyed the pain. | |||

| Looking around i dont see any topic about immigration, which is surprising. I dont have a real strong position on it. But it seems to me that illegal immigrants could be creating unfair competition in our work-force (why pay a decent wage to an American when you can pay an illegal peanuts). What do you think should be done about it? | |||

| It sounds like OCD to me....
I've had some experience in this field myself, i was once a psychology major.. but i switched. I switched because after seeing how some of the operations were being run i was sickened by the greed of it all. I cant speak about psychiatrists, but my experience with psychologists is that many of them (not all, but enough to make me want no association with the thing) are primarily interested in the greenbacks. People come in, they have some minor problem.. lets make it seem worse than it is, after all time is money and we want to keep talking. Lets make them think they cant possibly deal with any problem themselves, they need our expert advice, which costs money. Lets get them into a therapy group, that way they have to show up regularly and many pay money at once to sit in a group and listen to other people's problems. There is nothing most people can gain from a psychologist that they could'nt gain from just getting advice from a friend or family member. But the psychologist charges big bucks for that shoulder to cry on. |

I was thinking Illegal immigration when i started the thread, but it does'nt matter much to me, let chaos ensue
Snow Tomato - True, if you're educated probably illegal immigrants are'nt a threat to your job. (though that could be coming soon with educated people coming from certain parts of Asia to take your job for cheap) But what about for the majority of Americans who are'nt college educated? School isn't for everyone, some cant afford it and others could'nt succeed at it. For the average working joe, illegal immigration could conceivably drive down his wage until he is living in poverty. |

| If America is destined to Deny Christ and all, then why would you care that the government wishes to be religion-neutral? If its going to work out that way regardless, then how is it holding us back? It would seem it would actually just be pushing your prophecy forward and accelerating your rise to heaven. no? | |||

| But you are a Christian right? So you'd be saved, especially if your god has any compassion on a true believer at all. But seeing as how its all already worked out and predestined then its just going to happen one way or the other and there is nothing you can do about it, thus no point in worrying about it.
I don't believe in prophecy or an all-powerful god, so i'm not so much worried about the rapture coming. Massive natural disasters on the other hand... But if i were a believer, i would not be worried in the slightest about any of this, because however things are, they are that way because God made them that way and has all this in the master plan. An all-knowing God made you knowing all the choices you'd make, so why make someone just to send them to hell? |

| OCD came immediately to mind when you mentioned the ritual of it, and the way its something inconsequential that you just do for no clear reason. If you talked to a professional about it i'm fairly sure they'd either say mild OCD, or something related to that. Not everyone who has OCD always had it severely. For many people it starts out as something minor thats not a big deal to them, but over time it becomes obsessive behavior they have great difficulty controlling. Or maybe its just an annoying habit. I would'nt worry about it unless it gets to the point where you just HAVE to do it or you cant sleep at night. | |||

| I was once playing Stunt Racer (an old PC racing game), at least i think thats what it was, and i was screwing around trying to wreck in a spectacular way. I rammed into a car head-on and for some reason was suddenly hurled so high into the sky that i could see the map below as a small dab of color amidst a great black nothingness. |
