| I've never heard Fall-Out boy.
But in general, a band has their best moments early on in their life, when they have origional ideas and have'nt run out of them yet. Usually bands are not mainstream early in their career. Additionally, sometimes when a band signs a major label deal, their music changes because major labels very commonly will edit or censor their sound, trying to make them "the next big thing" instead of letting them be who they are and making the music they want to. My favorite band used to be Guided By Voices, they released a dozen kick-ass albums on their own or on tiny little labels before finally signing with a major. I dont care for any of the albums they made after that, because although you could still tell it was them, the sound changed. It became over-produced sounding, and more generic. It started to sound same-y where it used to sound experimental. |

When i was a kid, i loved horror movies, and i watched hundreds of them. There are 2 in particular that i remember thinking were extremely scary when i was somewhere between the ages of 6 and 9. I would like to go watch them again to see if they really were that cool, or if i was just that young The problem is i have no idea what the titles of these movies are, all i have are vague memories of some of the scenes from them. I'm hoping if i describe them maybe someone out there will know what the name of the movie is. Both these movies must have been made sometime in the 70s or early 80s at the latest. So here goes...
In one movie there was a young girl, probably in her early teens, and she is lost or something in a rural area. She ends up at this big fancy mansion and a strange older woman lives there and kinda takes her in temporarily. The girl is wandering around in the back yard, which is like a huge vast orchard. She is out there around dusk and she sees someone approaching distantly in the orchard. As he gets closer it is obvious he is a zombie and is running to get her. She climbs up a tree to get away from it and it keeps leaping and trying to grab her. Then the older woman comes out and calls the zombie off like she is in control of it, and sends it away. I think she is some kind of witch or something. I also remember there being a scene where people are going somewhere in a schoolbus on a rural dirt road, and the bus gets surrounded by zombies and they break out the windows and start getting inside. In the other movie a family moves into a house and there are small pale humanoids living inside the walls secretly and spying on them. They are afraid of the light and mainly live in the basement. At some point they start killing the people in the house and there is a scene where they drag a woman into the basement and she has a camera, which she starts using, and the flash scares them away long enough for her to get away. |

| Vulkar - true, American Indians are no longer numerous enough to need all this land, but i was only using that as a way to help people maybe understand how Palestinians must feel, and why they'd be pissed off. You are very wrong about Cherokee and Catawba being the only major tribes to live in what is now the US though. The land used to be filled with tribes everywhere in every state. Just in the area i grew up in, there was once great tribes such as the Delaware and the Seneca, along with hundreds of smaller tribes. I took an entire course in college just about the tribes that used to live in the area. | |||

| No, thats not it, i saw "The People Under The Stairs" not that long ago, in this one the things living in the house were much smaller than the kids in that movie, and more non-human looking. | |||

| As to whether cigarettes can kill you or not, i've heard many smokers say it is not harmful. This is only a defense mechanism they use to give themselves permission to smoke and feel better about it. Virtually every doctor in the country will tell you not to smoke for about several dozen reasons. All research i've ever seen on the subject clearly shows harm being done. The tobacco companies love people to believe they are'nt being harmed, but it just isn't true (Why they dont invent a harmless less addictive cigarette with all their billions of dollars is beyond me).
People are genetically different though, so the actual damage caused will vary from person to person. An occasional person will live to 90 even if they smoke, but they are the exception, not the rule. But even in moderation cigarettes are harmful in ways that most other things are not. As an added bonus they are also harmful to the people around you. In my own life experience i've seen 3 people get emphysema from smoking, i've never known 1 person to get that who did'nt smoke (not that their could'nt be someone somewhere). My uncle died in his early 40s from cancer, and he was a heavy smoker who got hooked at around 13 years old. He tried repeatedly to quit but just could'nt get off it. His sister was a moderate smoker and she got a brain tumor in her late 40s, but managed to survive it. Their father did'nt smoke, he lived to be 98, and then only died due to a car accident. There have been no other cases of cancer anywhere in my family tree that i'm aware of other than those two. What a surprise, they were the smokers. So, due to the clinical data saying smoking is harmful, and my own life experience suggesting it is harmful, i'm going to go with it being harmful. Seems like a safe bet to me. |

| I agree that not every band starts out great then loses quality over time, but it seems to me that at least 80% of them have their best moments on their 1st or 2nd album, and 99% of them lose quality after signing to a major.
I can think of a few musicians who got better over time, but not many, its really the mark of a great artist to me if they dont lose quality over time. I'm not talking about technical proficiency here, i'm talking about song-writing ability. I dont give a damn about technical proficiency, i'd rather listen to someone who had real vision but had no idea how to play their instruments than some guitar wizard with dull songs. |

| I've never been a big Green Day fan, though i've never disliked them, i consider them better than just about any other modern band on a major label. The thing about punk rock is that alot of it is anti-corporate, anti-sell-out. It's hard to sing songs about the evils of Britney Spears or whatever crap is being sold as music these days, when you yourself are part of the same machinery. This is why punk rock and major labels can never peacefully co-exist. Green Day is not really punk-rock though.
Me, i'm a huge music fan, probably even obsessive about it, and i'll listen to anything that i think has artistic merit. With modern music this is very very rarely something on a major label. I'm not opposed to the idea of major label musicians making good music, it just rarely works out that way anymore. I think its because the major labels are primarily interested in the lowest common denominator, and the big mass appeal, so they wont touch a band which is truly innovative and origional. It just about has to sound like an already proven seller, or once in awhile you'll get some wierd maverick working at one of these places actually sign something cool, which will then usually be a huge flop for them because they wont know how to promote something different, and no amount of promotion is going to get the teenage girls interested in something like Caroliner Rainbow or Trumans Water. I have got some things from major labels recently though. I liked the My Morning Jacket CD i got a few months ago, and Modest Mouse has managed to maintain a decent level of quality after moving to a major. But if you asked me to name off even my 100 favorite albums, i bet i could count on 1 hand the number of them on major labels and released after the 70s. |

| I'm going to sue because i was born near-sighted and can never be an ace pilot! Its all nature's fault! I'm also sueing because i was'nt born with huge muscles and because i was'nt born a genius. On top of that i may sue the rich because i was'nt born into a rich family and that's discrimination! | |||

| Arwon - I also like the Talking Heads, but i cant say anything about whether or not they "sold out" over time because i only own thier 1st 4 albums and have'nt heard anything else. I really love "Fear of Music" and "77" though. I have not heard Augie March, but i do listen to Australian bands, some of my favorite bands are from Australia.. Radio Birdman, Richard Davies, Terracid, Love & Death, lots of good stuff from down there. You mentioned Deerhoof earlier, i just bought a Deerhoof album, i have'nt listened to it yet though. I had a 7" from them many years ago but i lost it.
Just because a band's sound changes does'nt mean they sold out, i dont think anyone is argueing that. People grow and get bored making the same sound all the time and try something different. It's when they let marketing influence their sound, or do whatever they can to get as many people to like them as possible without regard to artistic integrity that they become sell-outs. Like when one band has just become a hit, then a bunch of other bands think "hmmm, i bet i could sound just like that!" |

| I like Sonic Youth to. They are'nt grunge or from WA though. They are from New York and pre-date grunge by several years.
The whole Daydream Nation album is great! I cant say they are my favorite band, but i do like them. |

| What turns people on or off should just be their own personal business. If i want to view porn from time to time, finding the experience enjoyable it is really nobody elses business. And if you want to avoid it like the plague, that is none of my business. At the end of the day it's just sex, and i dont see how its a societal problem. When people are forced to watch porn they dont like, or the jesus-police bust down my door and take my stash, then its become a societal problem. I dont think its come to that yet. When you say you have no attraction to a nude female i have to wonder about whether you are actually a straight man, because for me its an automatic reaction to become turned on when i see a nude female posing provocatively (unless she is unattractive for other reasons, such as being really old or sickly or whatever). And if you are'nt straight that's fine to, and really none of my business (i have a good friend who is gay).
I believe that we have put WAY too much thought into a nude human body, it is only natural, there is nothing wrong with nudity. Saying there is something wrong with nudity is like saying there is something wrong with being a human. |

| Many of my favorite bands are from WA though. Do you like the Beat Happening? Walkabouts? Satisfact? Modest Mouse?
I think they did get lumped in with the whole grunge scene in a round-about way, but to me they dont sound like grunge because of the more experimental nature of their music, with the emphasis on noise experiments and songs in unusual keys rather than on loud sloppy guitars like Nirvana or the later bands copying Nirvana (or Dinosaur Jr., who i always felt Nirvana was copying themselves). |

| I'm only responding to you telling me that nude women do not turn you on, but it would have been none of my business had you not volunteered that. I'm not upset about any of this, if i came off that way then sorry about that. Seriously though, if it goes so far as actually being turned off by females, then you might not be straight, even if you are also not gay. Asexual? Is that possible?
I thought you had a problem with nudity, because you said we have a huge out of control porn problem, when i dont see that we do, and the only way i could understand that was to think you thought any nudity = porn = big problem. People who are wasting their time surfing porn at work get fired, so then that problem is solved. Most places monitor what you do on a work computer these days. That's a problem which is already solved in most places and will be completely eliminated everywhere before you know it. What kids magically find porn in their bedrooms? That never happened to me! A woman finding porn on her computer due to a teen-age or older son should have seen that one coming, most men (even if you are'nt included in this), have a very strong sex drive, ESPECIALLY in the teen years, and will naturally be curious about sex. Looking at porn is one way to satisfy that curiousity. But really, finding porn on a computer is not exactly the end of the world, its just a lecture. He should have encrypted it ![]() |

| Arwon - Please dont destroy my image of Devo, I only have their 1st album but i really like it. Are the rest really that bad? Australia's music scene is a bit of a mystery, there are several bands down there i really like, but i know little about it outside of those. New Zealand on the other hand....
I still have'nt had a chance to listen to my new Deerhoof album, i got real busy all of a sudden, but it will happen soon! Have they become more like Melt-banana? The Deerhoof 7" I used to have was kinda odd, but not spastic. Melt-Banana is spastic personified. I saw them live in 99, and they were just like that live to. |

My sister saw Sonic Youth live and told me it was'nt as good as the albums maybe their sound is best in the studio?
I also like Pavement (especially Slanted & Enchanted, nothing else comes close by them) and Built To Spill. Was grunge ever a serious genre? It seemed more like a style of clothing than music, most of what has been called grunge fits better into other categories. |

Take a deep breath, it's gonna be ok
I did'nt say you were gay, i said you may be asexual. Regardless, you are not typical for a male human. I know a psychiatrist who would love to meet you, because he told me repeatedly that every single human male either has sex, masturbates regularly, or has a medical problem and if they say different they are lieing. Probably 99% of heterosexual males are turned on by seeing a woman nude, NOT turned off by it. That is abnormal, which is not a judgement on you, it is a simple fact. That same psychiatrist would tell you that if you are'nt masturbating, and you are'nt having sex, and you have a sex drive at all, then it is going to come out somehow, and he would be worried that it could come out in an inappropriate way. Not that i'm saying that, but i swear to god that is what he'd say because i heard it all before. Why do you think porn is a problem in our society? explain it then because i'm apparently not getting what your saying. Porn is not addicting like nicotine is. It is at best psychologically addictive for a very small number of people. Those people can be treated for it and have normal lives, its not like they will get cancer and have no possibility of a recovery, and its not like they are harming other people by looking at photos in a private space. The only time i'd agree with you that it is a problem would be in cases where the models in the photo were unwilling and were forced or tricked into being in the photo, but we have laws against that. To live a normal life you will have to overcome your fear of nudity, or find a woman who also is turned off by nudity and does'nt really want any sex, but she would be just as abnormal and rare as you. Once again i'm using abnormal not as an insult, but as a simple statement of fact. |

It's sad what's become of Devo. I'll just try to pretend all that never happened and stick to the early stuff
Melt Banana is indeed awesome. I finally listened to my new Deerhoof album (Green Cosmos), and it is very different than i remember them being.... but in this case different is not a bad thing, i really like it. Plus Sign - What art-noise are you talking about? I like some noise music but am not sure what you mean. Snow Tomato - You're right, the music is what's important. I think the corporate side of things missed that message though. |

just because something happens once in a great while and is illegal, does not mean people should alter their lives about it, otherwise we'd have gotten rid of automobiles a long time ago
a psychological addiction is not nearly as bad as a physical one, especially when the addiction is on something which is not physically harmful, in that case it borders on just being a personal choice. Maybe for me playing 4 hours of video games a day is just fun, while you may think thats excessive and an addiction, but at the end of the day it just comes down to how you choose to live your life, what makes you happy. Having testosterone is the natural state of the male, it is not something to fight against. If you really wanted to fight against testosterone you could be neutered, so how about it? did'nt think so!
If you masterbate and you like women, then is it safe to assume you think of women while you do it? Are you imagining a woman in a burka? It just so happens that i have worked with sex offenders before when i was in college, and all research i've seen suggests that there is no link between pornography and rape. Someone who looks at porn is no more or less likely to commit a rape. I've known several rapists who had an aversion to it, they needed the real thing to get off, so they went out and raped instead of looking at porn. Millions of people die every year due to nicotine addiction, you'd be hard pressed to come up with one who died from looking at porn. Maybe somewhere some old guy got too excited and had a heart attack or something, but its probably less likely than death by shark bite in the midwest. Masterbation is a perfectly natural act, and nothing to be ashamed of. Even some animals masterbate in the wild. It is your upbringing that has made you fearful and shameful of it which is making you feel that way. My advice to you is to be less sensitive to everything, i've not said anything as an insult to you but i bet you take it that way. I dont think i'm typing in all caps ![]() (edited by Jomb on 02-08-06 08:46 PM) |
