I've never understood why no SNES emulator has the mentioned features, they could be very useful.

Yeah, I quoted him over a ZMD and Elazul's Pad, if anything it just gets him publicity, outside of the Sonic hacking scene not many people know of Stealth's work.

The patch to fix the vampires is impossible, once you move them out of a certain possition on the battle field they disappear. It's annoying too because like all this game's problems Square Enix could've fixed it in minutes if they really tried.

1. I like everything except for the screenshots at the bottom, reducing their size just seems odd considering how small they are to begin with.

2. I hate "demo" hacks, with one level and some graphics changed. I only want to see final or betas of high-quality hacks that have been discontinued. Of course, no hack is ever really final, I still tweak Castlevania Retold now and then, but the hack should be at a point where the creator feels its complete.

3. I like this idea, most archives aren't updated as much as they should be, if the creator can upload a page for their hack on their own chances are you'll get a lot more hacks in the database. Of course, as you said you'd still have to sort through them all and pull out the crap.

NO, N00B! Make your own thread about it! Don't spam this gem of a thread!

Sorry for the flaming, but this thread means so much to me.

It's just a thread...

Anyway, Terabyte, check Esrael's site, he might have a patch... and if not there, then I reccomend checking some sonic ROM Hacking based sites.

I wouldn't mind having a stand alone patch either, but no one (to my knowledge) has made one yet. Esrael's works more like Sonic CD's spindash, plus it overwrites space used by his titlecard patch.

That was right below the font enhancement on the lists of things that needed to be fixed.

If I knew a debugger from my ass it'd have been done by now...

The screenshots fit neatly in one row if they are small. Also, what about any future hacks such as N64 hacks where screenshots are 640x480 in size? Or PC hacks etc.. Just because the majority of hacks are NES or SNES, doesn't mean they're all small. That's the main reason it's there. The same was done for the translations. It keeps all the screenshots the same size for the layout rather than the screenshot size reflecting the resolution of the console and being uncontrollable in layout.

I didn't even think about that, it makes sense now.

I've got an idea related to bugfixes. A few games (FF3us/FF6 mostly) have a huge number of bugfix patches available but you usually have to go to the author's homepage to find them, most sites that host hacks don't have a section for these. They're too small to warrent a page for each of them but it'd be nice if you could go to a page with a list of all the bugfix patches available for a certain game.

Games I know for a fact have bugfixes/tweaks:

Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy IV Advance (I made them)
Final Fantasy III US/VI
Secret of Evermore
Secret of Mana
Seiken Densetsu III

Here you go, Nightcrawler:

RPG Legion's Patch Section
Assassin's Barren Webpage
Tenchinohoukai's Patch Section
Imzogelmo's Final Fantasy III Not-Even-Penultimate ROM Resource
Dragonsbrethren's Temporary Index (Why not add Castlevania Retold 2.0 to the site while you're at it?)

Prepare to take a lot of flak for this, even though you're doing it for research purposes. There will always be those who will feel the need to attack this project for the simple fact that you're translating a game that's already been translated. Try not to let their words get to you.

That being said, I wish you guys luck, I'm sure you'll find a lot of interesting stuff that never made it into the US release. How far do you plan on taking the project? Just a retranslation of the script or will you actually be inserting it into the ROM?

NES games can only have four palettes for sprites. In Final Fantasy these palettes are:

Yellow, Light Brown, Light Blue
Red, White, Peach
Variable
White, Light Grey, Grey

You can hack the colors of the three non-variable palettes, and set any of the classes to use any of the palettes. The variable palette should not be used, as it will change everytime someone attacks or casts magic (Though it could be a special effect for a certain class, I guess). FFHackster has the ability to edit and change the palettes, by the way.

Yeah, the armor types can't be changed in Hackster, so you have to change the right ones. Weapons are weapons, however, you can change anything.

That could work, but often times great hacks are passed up because they are for overhacked games. Maybe a combination of that and reviews would be a good idea, though.

I don't know how much this'll help you, you sound inexperienced, but Silver X wrote this document:

http://sliverx.panicus.org/RH/nesmusic.txt

It's pretty much the only thing related to general NES music hacking out there.

Mapman: Can you change warrior's (fighter) mapman colours to eg. Green, Blue and White?

Yes, from Hackster it's right there next to the button to edit the battle sprite.

Can you change the weapon icons, like make icons for MACE, RAPIER, BRASSKNUCKLES?

Yes, open the ROM in a tile editor like YY-CHR, scroll down until you see the font, draw some new ones over the old ones or replace some squished text.

Can you make TOTALLY new class (in other words: have eg 7, 8 or even 9 total classes)

With your level of experience, no, you'd have to get into assembly hacking for that, something I'm sure you're not really for yet.

Can you make TOTALLY new items (without replacing any older)

See above.

Also, since I'm sure it'll come up, it's not currently possible to use DTE for any text seen in battle, when they translated FF1 they never bothered writing an English DTE routine for battles, you'll get Japanese character-on-top-of-character DTE instead.

Other than Mario Adventure (Which is already getting enough attention) I'd have to say the first one I played, SMB3 Challenge.

Hey, dudes. You have to admit this is pretty smart for a six-year old. I mean, he has grammar and punctuation that rivals the majority of the internet, not to mention a drive and ambition that no one else can match.

Seriously, though, let's institute a multi-year-ban or something. By the time he comes back (if he even does) he will have little to no recollection of what happened and he'll probably be a lot smarter after being around the internet for a couple more years. (Not to mention a lot more scarred for life)

I guess. When I saw his age, I was pretty shocked. At 6, I didnt even know how to turn a computer on...never mind how to do anything as complicated as emulation/hacking at that age.

I made the letter "A" move around on my Commodore 64... I wish I could still do that...

Dammit, dammit, dammit, dammit! Everytime I see FF1 screenshots like that I remember that I still haven't unleashed mine on the world and if I don't soon no one will even care...

It looks great, by the way, I want to play it.

...oh, and custom palettes are bad for those of us who want to play good hacks on our actual NES consoles.

This debate comes up every few months.

Did you know, back in the day, they referred to "modding" computer games as "hacking" computer games? They did, do a search for some old Wolfenstein 3D hacks, you'll find them.

I'm not sure when the term "mod" took over, probably either because the "real" hackers bitched about the misuse of their term or to seperate the process from cracking, which just about everyone hates.

If I suggested this to "someone" he'd probably flip out about it, but why not just build off of Woolsey's translation? Keep what was good, add in what had to be cut, change what was wrong. What I'm trying to say is retranslate the whole script to get everything, but write it into the official translation. Keep it readable and keep it as good as the original, a lot less people will feel it was a waste of time.
