Heh, I bet this is why Nintendo started making their Metroid games hold your hand the entire time...

Ha, I remember this project

First time I ever seen an atari hack and it's of one of my favorite games.

There are actually quite a few Atari 2600 hacks, I found a website with a lot of them a while back, they're mostly patches to make the arcade ports more like the originals though.

First of all, I highly suggest you use YY-CHR instead, you can view Link's tiles properly using its FC/NES x16 alignment mode:

As I said, you need to hit - to shift Link down a pixel, then it's aligned properly, that's what your green line and dots are, a piece of Link that you didn't replace, I'm assuming anyway.

As for the other graphic:

Again, hit - a couple times to align it properly.

Yeah, that's the site, there're even more than the last time I was there.

I didn't think the 2600 was capable of that...

Sounds interesting, I might try hacking something myself, just downloaded the entire 2600 ROM set

I played your hack, I like the graphics, if you're open to suggestions I'd look into changing the background, maybe a wall and some searchlights or something.

I know you're just joking but try to think inside the games' engine, there's so much unused potential. Take The 13th Prodigy's Maridia idea, water rooms were never really used in Zero Mission. Take Jigglysaint's description of how elevators work, the Space Pirate Mothership could've been so much better. A great hack takes advantage of everything that is available.

1) Generic "USE GOOGLE" posts are stupid.
2) Asking questions is the whole point of an interactive message board
3) Sticky topics are useless because nobody reads them
4) If you don't have a [real] answer for him, you don't have to answer. No harm no foul.
5) Having this topic on the board (even if it goes unanswered) does not harm or even inconvienience you or anyone else.

6) The sticky topic is an unorganized mess with no real listing of editors.
7) Not every editor in existance is in the sticky topic.
8) An editor might be in progress or available on a website no one here visits.
9) People love to be assholes on the internet where there is no fear of repercussions.

Rockman's tutorials really helped me out when I was starting, so use them.

My palette hacking tutorial should help you learn the basics of breakpoints and "advanced" palette editing:

Open FCEUXD and load your ROM, start a new game and wait for Samus to load. Open the built-in hex editor and set it to PPU Memory. Search for $00161927, you should get a result at $3F10.

Right-click on 19 and add a write breakpoint. Play like normal until you pick up the Morphing Ball, the debugger should "snap", the top instruction will be STA $2007 = #$00, scroll up twice and you'll see LDA ($00), Y @ A298 =#19.

Confusing? Not really, all it says is load the accumulator with the value at $A298 in the NES Memory, which happens to be $19, the green that's pissing us off right now. Go back to the hex editor and switch to NES Memory, go to offset $A298, you should see $1927... I hope you recognize them, that's Samus' green and yellow, they didn't change her helmet color this way for some reason. Right-click on $19 and choose "Go here in ROM file".

Okay, change those two values to whatever you want, go back into the debugger and click Run. Now play until you go through a door, it should snap again, but this time it'll load the correct colors. Next thing to do is get some missiles and do the same thing for their palette, then get the Varia and do both again. Good luck.

He didn't send us demos, he sent us betas to test, if you don't know the difference you probably shouldn't have one.

I don't want to sound like an asshole but you're doing something wrong. SMILE is your only option now, there are no other editors available or in development, you're either going to have to learn to use it or make your own.

Did you edit Ceres like AlexAR said? If you did don't edit Ceres, it's as simple as that, even Drewseph didn't edit Ceres in SM: Redesign, that proves you shouldn't be touching that area. Having Ceres in your hack wouldn't make sense anyway, just use SMILE's "Disable Intro" option.

Lenophis, King Lettuce, and myself are all working on a massive Final Fantasy 6 project. The hack will be mainly a rebalancing, and it'll get rid of any "low level" aspect or something that shouldn't even be entirely possible to do. Characters will be strengthen/weakened, depending on the character, and the same goes for monsters.

There will also be many added bonuses to the hack, including this event change.

To compliment some new events, we're thinking about changing one item so the hack follows Tent/Cabin rules like FF4 and FF5. This is the Cabin sprite that I came up with:

Assuming all goes well, and not like it ever does, this is an added bonus that should happen.

Discuss...

(Yeah, I totally stole Lenophis' post from RHDN...)

Dragonsbrethren, I see you inserted the GBA font instead of the classic Chicago font. I always liked Chicago, but I must admit that the new one looks good too.

What would really look excellent would be to insert the custom font used in the German translation. Now that looks great -- if you haven't seen it, I'll put together a screenshot.

I've seen the German translation's font, I was using that in my own hack until I decided to draw this font. The font isn't actually ripped from the GBA games, most characters are drawn wider to fit in with the menu font, which is still fixed-width.

DB, any chance you could turn the tilde that separates the HP a nd the max HP back into a proper slash? Never understood why Square changed it to begin with.

Consider it done, as long as Lenophis approves. Actually, I though I already did that.

Also, how realistic would it be to get the customization of Cyan's Sword Techs back in? The Japanese version had it.

We're looking into restoring some features from the Japanese version, that's all I'm saying now.

Edit: Meh, what the hell, have some more screenies:

(These are old, ignore the damage, Leno hadn't balanced the monsters for the new damage formula yet)

Could the numbers be one pixel taller? They look a bit small.

I like them as they are, different numbers are higher/lower than others, just like the GBA games. By the way, here's the slash in battle:

All the dialog is being rewritten, using both the US release and Sky Render's retranslation as references, the combination of the two, plus our own input, makes the dialog much better. Annoying plotholes have been filled (Ever wonder why Edgar knew about the Esper at Narshe?) and translation errors have been corrected, I'm even censoring myself so it doesn't come out like some of the lamer dialog hacks out there.

Lunar Magic is for the SNES SMW, not SMB3 or any variation thereof.
