So I wanna edit some graphics
with Tile Molester

A Dandy Guide through the basic
Graphics editing with Tile Molester

Hello. I'm Raccoon Sam. I'm here to guide you through the basic steps of editing Graphics with this wonderful little program called "Tile Molester".
So you want to edit, say, SNES graphics? Easier done than said. It's extremely easy to edit graphics from SNES games. Especially with Tile Molester.
First of all, Open up Tile Molester (tm.jar), and wait until The Splash screen goes out. Now, You have 2 options. Make a new Document, or Open a ROM.
Since you want to edit graphics, You'll choose File > Open. Now you must open a ROM. Open it, and start editing. (Note: I'm going to use the ROM "Super Mario All-Stars" throughout the tutorial).

Now, In front of you, You'll see nothing but Garbage.
Probably something like this:

Don't worry. It's natural. But since you want to find the Graphics, then scroll down with either the Scrollbar on the left, or the Arrow keys Up and Down.
Now that you move down, you can see that the Garbage moves away. Don't worry. Just go down and down until you see something that resembles you of anything related to the game. Let's say, something like this:

It can look really messy, but indeed you can tell from here that There's Mario somewhere there. But why are the sprites all scrambled? because your dimension settings are 16 x 16. This means that it will show you most sprites that are 16 tiles times 16 tiles. And as Far as I know, Mario is only 2 tiles from his width. So let's resize. See this button?

That's the "Decrease Width" Tool. Press it until your vision comes clear. What do you see? If you did it correct, you should see something like this:

That's Mario! You could edit now, but the colors are all funky.. The way to fix this is to change the Palette. There's two ways of doing this. The right way, and the custom way. For Custom way, you'll change each color. You must double click every color swatch, and try different color combinations until it's correct. The Color picker looks like this:

So if you wan to change the black background for example, just double click the Black swatch. Now you should get a popup looking like this:

Click the color you want, and press OK.
Now your color has changed. Repeat this to every color until you get the perfect palette.

There's also the other way to do this. The right way. For this, you need to have the program called "ZSNES".
Open up ZSNES and the ROM, and play to the point of the game where you can see Mario. For example;

Now, take a ZSNES Savestate, a ZST. You can take a ZST by pressing F2. The ZST file itself is located in the same directory as the ROM. Now, go back to Tile Molester, and choose Palette > Import From > Another File. Now you should get a popup where you can choose your savestate. Now, choose the Savestate you just took, and press OK.
Now your vision should look something like this:

But why are the colors still incorrect? Because The Offset isn't right. Change it by pressing the Right arrow next to the Color swatches. After a fine amount of clicks, you should get the correct palette. Like this:

Now, get editing! Note: The first color on the swatches is often Transparent. Don't use it as a color.
I think that's it. Good luck editing your ROM graphics!!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My graphics have weird spaces between them! How do I fix this?? They look like this:

A: Easy. See these? They're the Byte Controllers. Click either until your screen looks like this:

Q: My ROM is big and I hate going back to the places I've already visited! is there a "Jump to.." command?

A: No, but you can Bookmark visions. Just click the Navigate > Add to bookmarks. Now give it a description and push OK.
Whenever you want to visit it, just press Navigate > (Your description).

Q: My graphics look odd. I know that there's a Big Phanto in my vision, but It's looking weird.. Like this:

A: Wrong Codec. Change it from View > Codec > 4bpp planar, composite (2x2bpp).

Q: I see something, I know it's some graphics, but I just can't figure out how to edit it! It has a weird grid-thingie on it. Like this:

A: Wrong Codec. Change it to higher. In this case, It'd be 8bpp planar, composite (4x2bpp):

Q: I want to take a screenshot of my graphics!

A: Choose Edit > Copy to... And choose your saving destination.

You know when you Boot the ROM, the intro movie plays, yes?

Before it, there's an effect. This effect, to be exact:

Could it be possible to use the same effect somewhere else in the game?
For SMB3 nostalgia, perhaps when a level is entered, it does that effect instead of the blur?

Post your ideas and dicuss theories how this could be used here.

Could be. Although the Level finished is a tad bit faster and accelerates, I think.

modify effects... what about doing levels actually based on some of these effects? for example, when you complete al level, the "hole" follows Mario's position, this would be modied to make it stay in a certain size and use it thougt all the level to make like a dark cave where you can only see what's around Mario.

BMF Did something like this.
But I'm sure it had nothing to do with the Effect properties.

Perhaps a some kind of a voting system, such as in Newgrounds?
Before the Hack could make it to the portal, a certain amount of members would vote on it on rating 1 - 10, and if it reached over a certain score, it'd make it through.

Sounds good, yes, no?

I saw a dream once where I was on one farm and my job was to slap cow's asses.
I got money from it. Approx. 1 € a slap.

It was pretty weird and all that, but years after the dream, As me and my friend were walking down the street, My friend saw an old friend of his, and promised to give me 1 € if I'd slap her ass. The girl had a white coat with black spots on it.

I was pretty scared that moment.

Just.. Where are they, exactly?
I want to decompress Kraid, Draygon and perhaps some tiles, but I'm being told that in order to decompress stuff from SM through Lunar Decompress, you need offsets.

Thanks in advance!
