The whole way the record-label system works was fucked over from the start -- I can't remember the whole story now, but the gist of it is that someone who was only supposed to proofread a law/whatever actually snuck a whole new portion into it and it got passed, etc. Though I, too, have read horror stories from musicians who have gotten ripped off from major record labels. And, on a final note, I have my own reasons for boycotting music CDs. Remember the Sony rootkit incident? I think I'll pass on everything from Sony, and with how expensive music CDs are now anyway ($18? You can buy hundreds* of songs off of iTunes for that) it's just getting rediculous. Besides, if I really liked something, I'd go out and get a copy of it anyway. If the big movie/music companies didn't make their products so shitty (rootkits, DRM, etc etc etc) maybe more people would be into them. Right now (and very ironically), piracy is probably the safest route. *estimate
