...no, I never argued that. When I brought up the issue of the media, I thought more of the various pundits who make a living off of criticizing political figures' actions. If George Bush were to begin spouting anti-Jewish rhetoric, he would be attacked so visibly and thoroughly on television and radio that a person could not help but recognize it. He couldn't be so subtle and fly under the radar with it, because someone in the modern world would be quick to call him on it (which nobody really did with Hitler).

And, even if it were the media's coverage that would prevent genocide, you make it sound as if the American media pays a lot of attention to other countries, and foreign genocide has sort of just "gone unnoticed." Given the same circumstances or events in America, I can guarantee you that they'd be spotted and strewn all over the media immediately.

You're missing the major issue here. It's not like one day Hitler was considered a general all around good guy, and the next day he just up and said "Hey, here's an idea, let's kill all the Jews".

There had alway been some level of antisemitism in Europe, but after the Depression when it appeared that the Jews had came out relatively unscathed, they became a source of envy, and then a source of blame and a scapegoat for all the problems. And the Nazis nutured this hate and gradually went from oppression to slavery to mass execution.

You think that can't happen here? Then you're right, you are being naive.

After 9/11 there was racial tensions toward Muslim, and Arabs unlike any time in recent US history. It's obvious that much of the support giving to the Administration for the war in Iraq came from anger toward Arabs in general, since we can't catch all the individuals who did it (specifically Bin Laden), let's just declare war on the whole lot. They're the scapegoat.

How many people, reported on in the mainstream press, spoke out against the detainment of prisoners in Guantanamo, without so much as a trial, even months after 9/11?

God forbid there's another attack, worst than the first. With all the anger, hate and fear is it so unthinkable that a strong leader could convince the general population that internment is nessicary? Then internment camps become concentration camps, and concentration camps become death camps.

Bill Nye worked on something that went on Mars, invented a type of ballet shoe, and hosted a show with such inventive theme song lyrics as:

"Bill Nye the Science Guy
Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill!
Bill Nye the Science Guy"

That means he's great.

An example of the latter was in the chemistry episode, where the kids have a more terrified-than-normal reaction to being in a dangerous situation. They were put in the oven while inside a cake.

Posted on 03-01-06 03:57 AM, in Bird Flu Link
From how I understand it, the bird flu virus lives in the bird's intestinal tract and comes out in their waste, it spreads quickly in birds because birds, being filthy animals, don't mind eating from the same place they relieve themselves, but humans, being slightly less filthy animals, normally do.
A person can catch the flu from a bird after handling a bird that might wandered through its waste and got it on its feet and feathers. If that person doesn't wash their hands well enough before handling their food, the virus will begin reproducing in their intestinal tract, but short some very discusting situations I don't care to think about, its not very likely for it to pass from that person to anyone else.
So, before it can transmit between humans it has to mutate to infect the throat or respitory system instead of the intenstinal tract, so that it can be passed by coughs and sneezes. But since the size and location of the genetic code in the virus that controls this isn't known, there's no way of knowing what the likeliness of this happening is. The only reason its considered a possibility is because it happened before. Of course if a virus does mutate into a form that can live in the respitory system, it still has to be passed to a human, if the strain develops in an isolated group of birds it would likely die out before infecting someone.
If it does become able to pass between people, it could very well become a global pandemic, killing tens of millions of people. But it would probably be mostly in third world nations, and the effects would go largely unnoticed in developed nations, where it would remain mostly "other people's problem". Much like the current global pandemic that's killed tens of millions of people: AIDS.

No, probably not. Building your own just lets you customize parts that manufactures don't let you. Such as motherboard, power supply, case, and the brand of your drives.

Maybe for a high-end system, I don't know. But I know this isn't the case for low to mid range systems. The manufactures may have alot of extra costs, but they also get huge discounts for buying in bulk and making exclusive deals with hardware venders. For instance, I just added all the parts for a $299 dell to my newegg shopping cart. I chose the very cheapest of each brand and it still came to $321.82 before shipping. And that's without an OS.

I'm sure if you really look around on ebay, froogle, and cnet you could probably bring that price down, but it still wouldn't be much cheaper. To me the benefit of building your own is more in being able to pick exactly the parts you want and get higher-end versions of part the manufactures tend to skimp on, like the motherboard or the brand of hard drive (I don't want anything with a Maxtor in it).

I'm not Catholic, but I can see the benefit of Lent, from both a religious stand point (learning to appreciate what you've been given by giving it up), and self-improvement (just getting out of bad habits).
I was thinking about different things I could give up, there's really too much to list. Maybe this would be a good time to fight my caffeine addiction. But I just bought one of those commercial cappiccino dispensers for the kitchen (then again, maybe that's just an example of why I need work on that). Come to think of it I also spend entirely too much time here. Hmm...
I like Snow Tomato's idea of volunteer work, but I don't really have that kind of time. So maybe I'll donate more to charities. Maybe that Christian Children's Fund. I wasn't too sure about them because of their name, it sound it like more of an evangelical group more than anything, but I look into them, I guess they just mean Christian ideals. I have nothing against Christianity, I'm just not a big fan of food in exchange for your culture, type programs.
So, yeah, I guess I'll sponser a child. If anyone else wants to but doesn't have a credit card, contact me and I'll do it for you. Edit: The site has a "gift" option, so all the letters and stuff would be sent to you.
Edit: Ok, all done, sponsered some girl in Indonesia.
