Posted on 03-18-06 05:31 PM, in Someday I would like to learn PHP Link
Would http://www.php.net/ be my best friend?

Eventually (probably over the summer since I have almost no freetime these days) I'd like to learn PHP, just for the fact that I use an AcmlmBoard, could do things with my site, and that PHP overall can do a lot of useful. That, and learning and understanding it would probably make adapting to other languages easier.

So, I just need ideas. If I were just getting into PHP, what would be some good projects to do? Make a GD image, calendar, etc?

Basically I'm just asking for sources and ideas here.

I took C++ last year during my Junior year, and found it to be pretty decent. It was simple to learn the structure and everything, I just sometimes fail at "good" logical thinking sometimes, so some of the projects I had trouble on. But I've pretty much forgotten everything I learned, since after that class ... I didn't really try to do anything with C++ at all on my own.

Hopefully stuff will come back to me once I look into this.

Awesomely cheesy. And I like them. Thus why I'm asking where I could possibly get their albums. (still, if you think they're cheesy, you should hear Six Magics).

On their site it seems like some of their newer stuff is available for the states, like Symphony of the Enchanted Lands II, but I haven't really enjoyed their latest albums.

So I might just use amazon.co.uk. Can I use that just as I'd use amazon.com?
(I'm assuming so)

Anyways, AF you should give Symphony of Enchanted Lands a chance (first one). It's definitely a lot faster, heavier, and not nearly as orchestrated as some of their other albums, and is a Power Metal classic in my book. Emerald Sword ... one of the best songs ever.

I thought this would be a good place to ask.

Bruce Dickinson's single albums, what are they like? Are they any good? Worth checking out?

He's got a good voice (I prefer Geoff Tate though), but I honestly have -no idea- what his single stuff sounds like. I've heard it's quite different than his work with Iron Maiden.

Mario Movie looks too much like the FFIX theme.

Twinkle Star, not bad.

Either way, Daily Cycle still wins.

... hmmm, me too!

But seriously. I've been listening to a lot of music lately, and it's actually really inspired me to at least "give it a try". Even though half the music I listen to would probably take months / years to learn to play (Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, etc), it's still inspiring.

That and my dad's been a musician for as long as I've been alive. So, he just simply gave me an electric guitar of his, and a little amp that can do a few things. So far he showed me about strings and frets, power chords, minors and majors, steps (or something with a similar name like that. *laughs* I really can't think of the word for it now ...) and other little things like that, but I probably will try to take up lessons pretty soon.

Yeah yeah, you've told me about your special shops there enough times. Thanks for shoving it in.

Anyways AF thanks for the link. And great prices too (probably how much they'd go for at amazon also).

mrmenz: Yeah. So far I've heard Symphony of Enchanted Lands part 1, bits of part 2, Power of the Dragonflame (didn't really like that one), and Dawn of Victory. Overall I think Symphony of Enchanted Lands blows their other albums away.

I ordered Luca Turilli's first solo album yesterday. Seems like fans complain that it's "too much like Rhapsody", but I don't think that'll be a problem for me. That, and I tend to disagree with a lot of reviews out there about Power Metal ...

AF: Jeeze, all I said was I 'prefer' ...

But then again, I couldn't say I knew that. According to Wiki however, even Rob Halford uses that technique.

So overall I would actually say I do think Bruce has a stronger voice, but I think Tate does a better job hitting the higher / operish notes. 'Queen of the Reich' is a great example.

Michael Kiske is probably the 3rd best vocalist in terms of this style. I'm not so sure what his Supared band is about (I've heard it's not really metal), but his early work in the 80's with Helloween, and their Keeper of the Seven Keys (albums that put anything Iron Maiden and Queensryche put out to shame in my opinion. Okay, maybe not to 'shame', but they were incredible and created Power Metal) albums was incredible. He doesn't have as much as a range as Tate or Dickinson, but he does a perfect job sounding just like them.

So yeah, I guess I'll have to check out Bruce's single works.

First Family Guy, now this? Awesome.

But yeah, that would be great if this replaced American Dad or something. I honestly can't stand that show. I don't hate it as much as I hate Drawn Together however ...

Either in the final dungeon (like say ... FFIV), or during a huge long side quest. That way, you feel like all your work was worth it.

If I really tried, is self teaching good? I have a friend who completely taught himself, and that's all he does these days (plays guitar). Or should I look into getting into some lessons?

I wanted to go see CoB (w/ Amon Amarth) but couldn't (no money).

Side Note: 2 days and a half until I go see Dream Theater.

You're also going to see Gamma Ray also right? When and where?

A friend of mine and I might try to go up to and see them in Minnesota (or maybe it was Wisconsin ...) this coming May.

Cheap tickets, but it would be an 8 hour drive there, and then back again. Anything for Gamma Ray however.

Hmmm ...

Crest of the Stars - They could kill the Enterprise.
Iria Zeriam - The setting always made me think of Star Wars for some reason.
Akira - I'd love to have one of those bikes.
Armitage the 3rd - A cyberpunk BladeRunner-ish setting, it would be interesting to live in.
Castle in the Sky - If I could own and control that castle, that would rock.

I would love to live in the Universal Century granted I was a Newtype mobile suit pilot or a Battleship Commander. Then, I would still have an awesome death.

This game looks outstanding.

Suikoden I and II both had, by far the best character development in any RPG I've ever played. I wanted to shed tears after beating II several times.

Then III came along. It had a great storyline, but by far the worst battle system I have ever seen in my life. Camera angles switched nearly 50x in a single battle, and the way characters were "linked" among eachother destroyed a lot of freedom, and just ruined the gameplay. That and the battles seem to take literaly 10-15 minutes to beat.

IV ... ugh, was I playing Wind Waker here? Spent so much time in the boat, it got old. That and everything else about this game just ... felt weird. It wasn't that great.

But after reading reviews like this and seeing a bunch of news and trailers on V, I'm extremely excited, and am in the belief that the series could very well be back on it's good roots.

It comes out tommorow, and I'm definitely getting it.

The only deep meanings I paid attention for, and saw were symbolism. From the simple fact of never seeing V's face (because it's pointless, it's not WHO he is that matters), and seeing the dead people pull off his mask towards the end, etc.

I mean I'm sure there's some deep meanings to the movie, obviously.

But overall I thought it was a great movie. I can't believe some of my friends compared it to King Kong however ...

The movie was told interestingly also. V the main hero, was not the main character. My friend's told me, that apparently the next Spawn movie is going to take on this style (Spawn beaing the hero, but not the person the camera follows most of the time).
