Hello. I'm MaxKnight. I decided to join here since the environment seems much friendlier than that of most other boards of this type. I've got a degree in programming, unfortunately earned in 2004, before Microsoft updated all of the software. Now I'm relearning Visual BASIC in order to get myself reacquainted with all the new features put into Visual Studio 2005.

I'm actually working on a VB program that is designed to simulate the NES game Dragon Warrior, though I'm hitting roadblocks as far as formulae are concerned. I've compiled a comprehensive list of stats and such for the player and monsters, but nothing much more than layouts and the like for the actual game.

Anyways, I'm hoping I may get some help, and maybe share some data that I've found. My main concern right now is figuring out how to read the disassemblies I've made of Dragon Quest and Dragon Warrior.

I know this thread is for ranting on Visual Basic, but I figure if you're ranting on it, you must know something about programming with it.

If this should be posted in a separate thread, please tell me, and I'll do so.

I have a few questions. I'm making a program in VB that is to simulate the NES game Dragon Warrior. I have several forms created for the actual game, but need some help with some of the controls.

http://img180.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mainformnr2.png

This link is to a picture of the main form. All actual gameplay is done here. My questions are as follows:

1) Does anybody know how to force a newline/carriage return in a multiline textbox? Almost everything that is text related will go in there, but for now it all runs together. I have several different subroutines that append text to this textbox, but have no clue how to make it newline so that it doesn't run all together.

2) Believe it or not, there is a picturebox in the center of the image. I want to design it close to how the game worked, with a top-down screen where you can move the hero around, scrolling the screen in whatever direction he's going. I'm planning a point-and-click interface, where you click on the tile you want him to move to, and he moves automatically to that spot. If a battle commences before then, the battle subroutine (yet to be written) takes over, and the move is canceled at the spot of the battle. I may be able to get all of the graphics I need to fill the space, I just don't know how to make it all work.

I realize this is a really big undertaking, but it's something I really wanted to do, since about 2003.

Thank you asakuS! As for the picturebox, assuming I ever get the right graphics for building the world there, I should be able to put code in to scroll the screen by removing rows and columns of squares from the edges and adding them back again on the opposing side when clicking, right? I'm not nearly that far yet, as I've no clue how to actually go about creating this without using far too many really small pictureboxes in a square pattern.

Well anyways, should I ever need anything more, I'll be sure to ask, as I know I'll not be able to completely finish this without asking more questions!

I can't stand eye drops. The last time they tried to give me eye drops to test for cataracts at the eye doctor's office, I passed out. After that, they would never dream of trying to give me eye drops.

It's a good thing, too, since I know I don't want to pass out. Shoot, I almost gave my eye doctor a heart attack, or something like that...

I have a couple of forums I post in. The old-style RPGamer Pokéboard, a couple GameFAQs boards where I'm attempting to solicit information that people apparently don't know about the games Dragon Warrior and Phantasy Star IV. This forum I rarely post in, as I don't have any useful input, and would only clutter most threads (as I'm possibly doing now).

Of course, there's always checking out TASVideos, The 8-Bit Theater, VGCats, and some other specialty sites dedicated to specific games.

Gonna hafta think on this one...

1) Not finding more threads to post in here.
2) Requiring sleep (that's a big one for me).
3) Being made to wake up when I'm already asleep (ironic? oxymoronic?).
4) Not actually finishing half of the games I play.
5) Mario Party 7 withholding three cruise souvenirs from me.
6) SSBM's All-Star Mode.
7) Squeenix renaming all of the spells from Dragon Warrior Standard to DQ8 crap.
8) Lack of the Final Fantasy Tactics remake for DS.
9) Lack of brilliant Sega Saturn emulators (I want Shining Force III dammit!).
10) Thinking of things that annoy me...

Meh... I guess I'm annoyed by more petty things than some other people... I could add:

11) Not finding a freaking job around here! Is it too much to ask to find a decent computer/programming job around central/southwestern Ohio?
