| Okay, so I got my hands on the midi2agb converter tool. Anyhow, it nicely makes .s files from midis for me. But I'm having a few problems when I get Sappy to import the .s file and compile it to tracks. Now I made sure that the midiplaydef.s was renamed to mplaydef.s, too.
Basically, it comes down to this: 1) I'm still not quite sure what I should enter for the first hex address. Should it be the header address of another song, the place in the song table, some blank space in the rom or what? 2)Compiling the song into the game destroys the ROM. I figure it's caused either by my incompetence due to 1) or by the midi files themselves, but I have attempted it with a few different midi files. Any help would be nice. |

| Yeah, it looks a little beyond my ability at the moment. I really need to buckle down and really learn ARM Assembly before I can really do what I want in GBA hacking..
Still, starting with some NES Assembly might be the way to go, except there's nothing really that I'd want to hack too much on the NES....except maybe Balloon Fight... |

| I was always a Bulbasaur user. Always. Then again, I liked all three of the starters.
Anyway, my preference for all of the series... Bulbasaur > Squirtle = Charmander Cyndaquil > Chikorita > > > > Totodile Mudkip > Treeko > > > > Torchic Damn, I hated Totodile. |

| The assembled song causes Sappy to crash with a runtime error in Kernel32.dll when played, as well as whenever the assembled song is accessed in-game, the game freezes as sound initialises. | |||

| Well, the ROMs I've been using are Advance Wars 2 - Aus (AW2E) and your Jukebox demo. Although the Jukebox demo was fiddled around with before I knew I needed to use empty space. In AW2, I've been sticking the songs in 617F1F, which is just where the free space in the ROM starts. Midis I've been using are:
http://www.vgmusic.com/new-files/JakesThemerev1.mid (Jake's Theme By ThreeHeadedMonkey) http://www.vgmusic.com/new-files/KoalTheme.mid (Koal's Theme By ThreeHeadedMonkey) http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/snes/somcontn.mid (Sunken Continent - Star of Darkness (2)) http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/snes/sombest.mid (Mana Beast - Meridian Dance by Nick) Yeah, yeah. I know I'm Advance Wars obsessed.
Regardless. And from what you've told me, basically a track can't end on a chord. Hmm. Still, that's reasonably helpful. |

Awesome. Seems I wasn't just making a colossal idiot of myself then.
Alrighty, time to fiddle around with this the next chance I get to use my PC. Edit: Okay, I've had quite a fiddle around with it, and got lots of songs to work with it. You're right. Jake's theme does sound really weirdarse with the AW2 voice sets. Basically, apart from a few, most Midi files I've been using have worked fine. I also discovered a bug, too. If Sappy can't assemble a song because it has an extended chord, then all songs attempted to be assembled afterwards will be given the error, regardless of whether they're okay or not. Thanks for all your help! ![]() (edited by Xenesis on 01-27-06 03:57 AM) |

| Oh, right. Regardless, if anything causes a subscript out of range error, then all songs attempted to be assembled after that will get the same error.
And one final thing, I've noticed that a lot of Assembled midis will play perfectly fine in Sappy itself, but they won't play at all in game, and instead just flatline with silence. The Jake's theme I gave you for example, won't play at all in game, but works fine in Sappy. |

| Well, it's probably not that practical, but if you really want to design a 2D Mario Kart hack, you could always try Super Circuit...It's basically the SMK engine, and it uses the Sappy music engine, so you could use Kawa's Sappy 2005 to edit the music.
Just a thought. |

| I think one point that's important but hasn't been mentioned is this:
Know as much as you can about the game before you begin hacking. Eg: When I learned to hack Advance Wars 2, I already had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the commander's stats and abilities. That made discerning a lot of things a lot easier, as I could link back numbers and data that I'd found to specific places. Also, think about ways that data for something could be stored. Would it just be a string of numbers, or an ID number or something like that. A little foresight and knowledge can make hacking a lot easier because it makes it easier to notice changes, details or find nuances you wouldn't notice otherwise. It's a lot harder to work on a game that you know very little about, because it takes longer to notice any changes you've made because of a lack of familiarity. Now, I've kinda mangled my wording, but you get what I mean. |

| It's impressive in scale, I'll give it that.
It's certainly something I want to give a look to. And from what I can tell from the screenies at your page, it still has a 'Metroid' design to it, which is promising. Just don't make it fiendishly hard or abuse Sequence breaking tricks, please? |
