I think that it would work with something like UIPS. I think ( I dont remember) that it is for both windows and mac. I have combined SM64 hacks together into one file with my hack included. I have done many hacks all into one so it should work with LIPS. If it doesn't then use UIPS. If you don't know how to hex hack then you have 2 options. There is the slow but very detailed one and then the overall general that gets you started.

1) Google "Hex hacking for beginners" and then follow an NES tutorial.
2) Go through both mario64 hacking threads from the old Acmlm's board and this current one. That is over 100 pages altogether but if you read it all then you will definetly understand hex hacking, a lot of it anyway. That will also get you ready for the begining of hacking n64 games. So, I would go for this one even though it is really long!

Good luck.

In other news,
Wonderful news everyone, well not really but to me it was what I had been trying to do since forever and it fianlly worked!!! Have you ever been wondering how Vl-Tone did that flying and emtal cap in the castle grounds? I can now include both regular and metal caps in ALL levels. Well, I haven't been able to test the ALL levels theory but I know it works in bob omb battlefield, and the castle grounds as well as the bowser levels. So try it yoruself! Here is how.

In the correct 0x24 command it looks something like:

24 18 1F [89] 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 [01] 00 00 13 00 22 50.

The parts in [ ] are the parts that are most important. First, the 89 is the character ID for the box that contains the caps. That needs to be 89 for the cap look, the next thing, 13 00 22 50 is the behavior code that is always for the box. Thne hte parameters are 00 [01] 00 00 where as 01 controls what the box contains. I have made a list to figure out what each one controls:

00 - Wing Cap
01 - Metal Cap
02 - Invisible Cap
03 - 1 Coin box
04 - 5 Coins box
05 - 10 coins box
06 - A star

I don't really know much about the star but there must be some way to control what the star gives you like from which level. I don't know how though. Here are some screenshots:

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This is them both in the level, the metal cap is occupying the space of the warp so now that particular warp is disabled.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This is mario with both caps on, pretty good don't you think? Just as cool as in Vl-Tone's Mod. I think that he got the position for the metal cap and wing cap in his so precise was because he used his editor to place the object not to import it.

There is just one glitch that is here. You still lose health with metal cap on when you fall from a high place. I don't know if this happened in Vl's mod so (somebody check for me) if it does happen I can fix it through careful looking through the rom.

I wanted to change some music to a game to some music other than the ones ingame. For example change the music to super mario world to something like super mario 64's or something else. Are there any hex tutorials that are available for this kind of thing. (Remember that I run a mac so I think about the porgrams you suggest if you suggest any)

Yoro edit: Kill the < /table> and < /td> in your sig. What the heck.

Did you not read my post above, try doing one of those options. I did the 2nd one even though its harder but now I am a decent hacker. I did both actually but started with the first then did the second.

It wasn't exactly what I meant so let me express it slowly. If you had n64 music like mario 64 and you didn't like the music it had, would you be able to change it to music of your own? I used that as an example and that wasn't correct.

Anyway, to answer the question, music editing is hard. There is no known way to edit SM64's music. You could experiment and try for yourself however.

Sorry, I haven't tried out the mystic box in other places but I will soon and I will try messing with the other bytes around it. If you get the star in the castle grounds the game freezes so I guess it automatically has to be in a course but if you get it in a course without asigning a star id to it then it freezes.

Well yea, Of course the newer music from newer systems won't be able to play on the older systems. (duh!) Well, If I am understanding this correctly, if I wanted the SMB1 bowser theme into mario64, I would have to get the code of the music from SMB1 and then transfer that into an empty space in the rom of m64 and get the pointer to point to that particular music? And also, I am not really understanding how to edit pointers, how would I edit them?

*sigh* I haven't worked on the hack lately becuase of boredom issues so I have been tring to help with the Animal Forest Translatio w/ a title. I think I might just quit the Animal forest project and go back to my hack cause I keep on screwing up the title I created. I try to make it better and it only gets worse. but that's enough of my ranting.

(now back to the topic at hand)
I'm going to try to finish the title screen for my hack this week since I'm going to have so many days off from school. I'm then going to do the big mode sprites (I can tell thats gonna' be a bitch to edit) and finnish off with the in level enemies... (I try to eit them but they always come out looking like Missingno.)

Oh' and that level editor would be amazing.

Great! Just a few more years, *cracks up* So, really, how much until a release? And yeah the vacation is coming so you should have about almost two weeks of time. That will give me the relax I need from my killer school.

back on topic: Im sure you ran into my thread about the ingame music, I want to import a different piece of music into my hack other than the ingame one. Kind of like what you're doing. So, I guess the porting music would be close to the same right?

You aren't understanding it correctly.

You would have to get the music data from SMB1 and then write a compatible music data player for the N64 platform; subsequently, you'd have to compile the latter, insert it and link it up with the game code.
No, nobody here is going to teach you that.

As for editing pointers, you would likely edit them in a hex editor. If you don't know what a pointer is, you probably are in the wrong forum/having set yourself the wrong goals. No offense, but you should know about pointers and the basics of programming before trying to get into hacking.

Well, geez I knew that pointers were in a hex editor, I don't know how to edit them or like what to edit them to.

When you want to hack music, it's a lot easy to write from scratch the music rather than pasting code from another game. Of course, you can do such thing for compatible game music engines, as MegaMan1-2 or MegaMan3-6 (NES).

Modern systems uses the entire music pre-recorded, much like a CD track, but looped. Systems like the N64 or the SNES still use tables, but with sound samples instead of wave generation, like the old NES does.

In other words, if you want to change the Mario64 music, you must find the music code (not the program code) for each track... OR to replace the instrument samples with others. With SNES was possible, no clue for N64, but I believe it is too if I'm not wrong...

Alright so how to find the music code you would.........?

I don't have a good grasp on pointers because I'm very young and don't understand everything. It took me about a week to understand the 0x24 commands in Super mario 64 hacking. I had never dealt with a lot of coding so it was too hard. I know that pointers are the things that point out where the levels are in hex like how it haas 405A60 as an address and in hex since it stands for bob omb battlefield. So I sort of understand....

But you own a windows right?(most likely) Its not that hard to find an app for windows with C in it. I have only been using a computer really for about a year really. I didn't do much on the computer before. And yes that concept of pointers isn't that hard but I have never learned about it. I know about most other things in hacking but not that.
