Okay now I'm the kind of person who will open something new and (usually) know immediately how to use it. EliteMap is not the case, or perhaps it's just my computer.
Let's take the scripts for example in Pokemon Sapphire: A) If I load an event script in the game, it won't even come up. My task manager will say that it's not responding. That was in EM 3.7. Also, scripts that do work will not compile (they give me run-time errors). In EM 3.6, the scripts do load most of the time, but the compile button will not even show up. B) I'm not very keen with hexes, so I'm pretty new to them. What is with the Dexter program in EliteMap? I can't edit the description on hand, it asks me for hex pointers and I have no idea what those are, so yes, I'm a noob at that. But I'd like some help with the fact that these scripts are screwed to the moon. My computer isn't very good but a program so simplistic like this should be able to run fine. Computer specs: Windows 98, 128 MB RAM, 800 mHz processor. |

As well as Pokemon Sapphire, I'm having a couple of problems with Hyrule Magic. I'm not able at the moment to go into much depth with these problems, but here are some examples of what's going on:
A) Sprites not appearing in designated places (not appearing at all). B) A massive splash of random items on the editor which actually do not appear in the game. This happened once on two maps after I tried to add 3 hearts and 3 blue rupees as items, the maps filled up with items and they were splattered on random tiles, but they did not show up in the game. C) Doors cannot be entered sometimes. This is probably just my own problem and not setting the correct door settings, although when I get these problems I try to match the settings as much as possible to the actual game and they still don't work. These are just a couple of the problems, does anyone know what's going on? I can't get into much detail right now as I have to leave in like 3 minutes. |

Originally posted by EuclidOriginally posted by Blue Falkon I did not really elaborate on that. The sprites were working on one map, see, and there were only about 3. 1 did not show up, and I figured it was because there was an object overload (even though there were not many objects on the map). Because of this, I removed some objects and made some changes, then one of the other enemies disappeared and I couldn't fix it. I did a few more changes and then the default green soldier on the map disappeared and screwed a couple of things up so I had to dramatically change the layout of the map in order to get things working again because there were 2 trigger events from killing enemies. |

I'm new here, so I assume my suggestion will probably be ignored... but, for those who may be interested: What about a Zelda 3: A Link to the Past hacking forum? Although I suppose there's a lot of other popular games that are hacked such as Megaman and Chrono Trigger so Zelda may not be that high of a priority. Just a suggestion.

Cutscenes, dialogue, the whole whatnot is easy once you know stuff like switches and variables. Variables are the key to the universe, you will learn someday. Make your own day/night system, banking system, battle system, pacman, whatever... hell, make an exact copy of the Majora's Mask 3-day system if you wanted to. Many don't believe it but RPG Maker XP is capable of quite a lot.
I'm a major veteran in the RPG Maker community (can't say I'm much of the community though since I don't participate in any of them, I'm just a private user). Try twinking around with variables and stuff and try to learn them, they're like mathematical switches. |

And I used to think that my games were cool with just different blocks arranged and stuff... hm, I stepped into a new world. Some of these make old Nintendo not know what they were doing. These are excellent.

One of the most attractive aspects of the game industry to me is the worlds that are displayed in the games, and that's something that attracts me to fangames as well. Without a good environment in most games, I feel they're almost pointless to play. It is true the game industry is running out of good designers, so what have you got to show?
It doesn't matter what it is (a fangame or an original game that you hope to create using actual programming, or maybe just an idea that may never happen), if you have created your own ideas for environments, settings, what have you... post them here! I'd be interested to here what you have to show, and perhaps others would too. If you are a person who would ever hope to be a videogame designer, it is important that you learn off of others, as well as use your imagination to create unique, enjoyable worlds. Doesn't matter what genre the game is, post your ideas here. |

A long time ago, a group of friends and I actually had an official (unofficial!) fangame being developed in C++ called The Legend of Zelda: Storms of Evil. It's interface was polygonal 2D like LTTP and played much like it but also shared the interface of Ocarina of Time. It introduced a new world and new dungeons, as well as much more. Also featured original music.
What happened? It a'sploded. The idea was thrown away. However, now I am working on a project along with some help from my girlfriend and her friend which is a ROM hack of Zelda 3. Unfortunately, I'm not super experienced with Hyrule Magic, so it might be interesting to have a team project occur. Anyone interested who is very experienced with Hyrule Magic or ASM hacking, contact me on MSN (ffxgm@hotmail.com). Some features include a new world, more perplexing dungeons with specific features (such as the Temple of Darkness, with invisible hallways and doors!) and more. It would be nice to have some graphics hacking but I'm not too experienced with that. Post here or contact me if you'd like to help. |

Oh, I see. Yes, my file does have a space in the name. I'll try fixing that and seeing what happens.

I can only think of programming it yourself using C++ or having someone help you. There are 3D game editors and stuff that you could probably use but I can't think of them right now or what they are since I never use them.

I just saw a thread about it in the archives and it seemed very interesting so I thought it was a little bit popular. Guess not. How unfortunate.

Do you have MSN? I have AIM but I almost never go on it. If you have MSN I can send it over there and you can discuss this with me more.
Edit: Actually... I think I solved the problem. I used to test via save states since I was too lazy to walk through Hyrule Castle like 235903908 times a day testing, but now that I tried walking through it again the enemies work. Edit: Another problem: This is again probably just me starter knowledge with the program not working well, but it might be a glitch. When Link walks around, certain objects/enemies are supposed to be layered over top of him (the tops that is, such as a tall torch or a knight... if you walk on the top of the sprite, it will show Link behind it and not on top of it). Some of my enemies are not layered, and Link walks on top of their faces basically. This happens to some objects too but I think the objects are supposed to happen since they're placed on the secondary part of a map (the "low" floor, and you can't fix that). These enemies are placed on the secondary part, but in the default game Link doesn't walk on top of their faces. Everything seems to be matching fine in both my game and the default game sprite-wise, but it still has Link in front of the enemy. There might be something I'm missing though... Also, I have no idea what P does (parameter). (edited by Blue Falkon on 11-20-05 11:56 AM) (edited by Blue Falkon on 11-20-05 01:14 PM) (edited by Blue Falkon on 11-20-05 01:14 PM) |

Just designers in general. The game industry is running out of designers and hiring them has become popular. I kiiiiiind of work in the game industry and I study it almost all the time and in one of my studies it explains that they're running out.
Usually, a game designer will adapt off of other designers. It's extremely hard, almost one of the most rare things in the industry, to find a completely original game. The only two I can think of right now are Nintendogs and that other thing on DS but I forget its name. Has little fish and stuff and you make things happen with sounds. It is okay to adapt off of other games, no one will get angry, but just don't right out copy everything in the game. At least put some originality in it. Then, you will be a successful game designer. |

I'm not sure how many people actually do this but I'm kind of interested in it. I have several projects I want to actually get deep into doing but unfortunately my skill only pertains to certain aspects (I have no idea about hex or graphics editing, I'm only good with design and the "simple" stuff, although I am trying to learn the rest).
How many people would be interested in team hacking? These are some of the games I'm interested in: Chrono Trigger - Temporal Flux (entire game override and graphics) Zelda 3 - Hyrule Magic (entire game override and possibly graphics) Super Mario World - Lunar Magic (ultra game override including graphics) Pokémon Crimson - EliteMap as well as a million other programs (entire game override) Zelda 3 and Super Mario World are at the top of my list. Chrono Trigger probably at the bottom. Anyone who's interested post here (and note that it will be blatently impossible for team hacking to occur without some form of instant messenging program such as MSN - that's all I'm using). If you want information on some of my ideas, especially for Zelda 3, just ask. |

I can see the difficulty in these games, that's something that I tried to do the first time I hacked Super Mario World. It was successful, very, and kind of fun... however, I do not believe a game is "fun" with just challenge, the levels need to actually be enjoyable as well. Instead of throwing a bunch of stuff together to try to make it hard, try forming up some good levels that are smooth but challenging. Make it actually look tasteful, looks have charm. Good work though on difficulty.

Originally posted by Dragon master I actually think the multicolored pipe problem is good in hacks but maybe that's just me. In a way it sucks. In another way it's cool. Anyway, as for the game... STOP! English time! Spelling errors really need to be fixed. I also think your text is going out of the dialogue box, don't make it too big. Also, leave overworld editing for experts. I'd suggest you wait until you're a lot better with the editor before you start editing the overworld. |
