Posted on 12-14-05 10:35 PM, in You know: What's the point in online ads anymore? Link
It's almost sad to watch people see them and think "Oh, I have messages" and click them. They don't even read the message sometimes, just look for the 'OK' button.

The main point is that a lot of advertisers pay for you just to display the ads whether people click them or not. Since most people don't have any blocking mechanism in place, that's a fairly nice income for a popular site.

Why people will stoop to popups and flash ads and spyware and all that crap, however, I shall never understand. Sure they may pay better, but what's the point if everyone who sees them never visits your site again?

So in short, they still market plenty of computers wtih the name of Compaq, but they don't suck anymore.

...I'm disappointed in you. HP makes some of the crappiest computers you'll ever see. They throw together the cheapest parts, mark it waaaaaaay up and offer almost no support. I bought a Pavillion a few years ago, and it overheated - wires were beginning to melt - straight out of the box. I had to cut a hole in the case and add a second fan just so it wouldn't fry itself. It came with WinME, a 5200RPM 20GB hard drive, 800mhz Celery CPU and 100 watt power supply. In short: PILE OF CRAP

That's pretty unlikely. Fans spin damn fast. The air pressure would have to be a lot more than it is in any can I ever used.

You wouldn't by any chance be using SDL? It's nice, especially alongside OpenGL. You can get an add-on called SDLImage that loads damn near any image format, and I think saves them too; that'd simplify your PNG issues.

Hmm...

BMF: Pwns anything to do with SMW. Fu is of course exempted from this.
DahrkDaiz: Obviously programmed SMB3. C'mon, admit it.
BGNG: Nobody who makes an F-Zero X editor can be not awesome.
Keitaro: Just awesome.
Knuck: About as intelligent as the loli he faps to all day. Considering how loli is generally either an array of pixels or a sheet of paper.
Leg: See Knuck.
HyperHacker: Is up way too late. Again.
Alastor: See Keitaro.
Kyoufu Kawa: I'm still laughing at that "eat more cock" billboard. Well not really, but yeah.
Acmlm: Come back already. Bring Bouche.
FreeDOS: Seriously, why the fuck don't you know C++?
Yoronosuku: Needs to bring Keitaro and both bitch-slap Knuck, Leg and others at the same time. Let them figure THAT out.
Danielle: >8^( > >8(
Xk: As soon as I saw your name, I knew someone would change it to "I still need a better man".
Tarale: I want to kidnap you and suck out your artistic talent. It shall be MINE! (Meh, who am I kidding... I can draw, I just don't have the patience. )
Fyxe: See Tarale. Actually, where the hell are you anyway? I miss your layouts.

That's about all the random people I can think of right now.

Posted on 12-15-05 04:10 AM, in Realloc() fails for some reason Link
OK, here's another fun one. fp is a FILE* and a private member of a class. The class has an Open() method which opens a file (using fp = fopen()). It also has a Close() method, guess what it does? I create one instance of this class by declaring it in the header file of my program. I call Open(), do some stuff with it, la dee da, then I want to open a different file in another function, so I call Close()... it crashes at fclose(fp). fp is still the same value that it was after fopen(), and the file is still open (at least, I never closed it), but as soon as it tries to close the file the entire program just quits with no error message. Is there any possible reason besides stack/memory corruption for this to happen? I already debugged the hell out of all the allocating routines.

Code follows:
class XMLReader
{
private:
[...]
FILE* fp;

public:
[...]
void Init();
void Unload();
void Reset();
BOOL Open(char* F);
void Close();
[...]
};

BOOL XMLReader::Open(char* F)
{
DBG(printf("Opening file '%s'\n",F));
//Get the directory
int i, p = -1;
for(i=strlen(F);i>=0;i--)
{
if(F[i] == '\\')
{
p = i + 1;
break;
}
}

if(p >= 0)
{
if(p > sizeof(FileDir)) p = sizeof(FileDir);
strncpy(FileDir,F,p);
}
else
sprintf(FileDir,".\\");
DBG(printf("File directory is '%s'\n",FileDir));

fp = fopen(F,"rb");
if(fp)
{
#if XML_DEBUG
fseek(fp,0,SEEK_END);
printf("File size is %d, ptr is 0x%08X\n",ftell(fp),fp);
rewind(fp);
#endif
return true;
}
return false;
}

void XMLReader::Close()
{
DBG(printf("Close file... "));
if(fp)
{
fclose(fp); <-- CRASH HAPPENS HERE when called from Unload() which is called from Reset()
DBG(printf("fclose... "));
fp = NULL;
}
DBG(printf("Done.\n"));
}

void XMLReader::Reset()
{
Unload();
Init();
DBG(printf("XML reader reset\n"));
}

void XMLReader::Init()
{
fp = NULL;
Line = 1;
Col = 1;
NumTags = 0;
FileStackPos = 0;
Tag = NULL;
}

void XMLReader::Unload()
{
Close();
for(int i=0;i<NumTags;i++)
{
DBG(printf("Free tag %d... ",i));
if(Tag[i].Content) free(Tag[i].Content);
if(Tag[i].Attrib) free(Tag[i].Attrib);
DBG(printf("Done.\n"));
}
DBG(printf("Free tag info... "));
free(Tag);
DBG(printf("Done.\n"));
}

[in main()]
if(!XML.Open("world_def.xml")) Die("Can't open world_def.xml\n");

[in another function]
XML.Reset();

*thwaps board* With the weird line break handling, I get to choose either having tabs in my <code> tags or not having every line double-spaced.
