I pretty much just use them when I can't save normally, when I'm hacking, or just after doing something REALLY HARD that I don't want to have to redo. (Nothing says fun like getting to the end of a chain of 20 Koopa Paratroopas over a bottomless pit while dodging spinies and fireballs, only to screw up and fall in a hole afterward. Or, worse, jump at something that looks solid, but isn't, and fall in a hole.) I even used a debug cheat in Metroid 2 on a real GBA to be able to save anywhere, simply because I didn't have time to go all the way back to a save point. Didn't use it to cheat, just saved. (I mean really, that function worked perfectly except for graphic glitches that are ridiculously easy to fix... it wouldn't have been at all difficult to make it a standard feature. )

Also, yes, it sucks when you accidentally load an old state and it overwrites your save file.

Eh, this forum's hardly active enough for a 4-month bump to be a problem (but don't do it again ). That post was pretty pointless though.

Simple answer: NESticle, despite sucking, was one of the most popular NES emulators back in the day. Everyone and their mom had the SMB1 ROM, and the emulator had a built-in graphic editor easy enough for a 9-year-old to use.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them fixing bugs, but for something that changes the game mechanics, they'd probably want to leave it, lest people complain that it's not quite the same as it was on SNES.

Hex: Hex Workshop for general editing, Translhextion for looking up text, Hexecute for editing text.

Emulator: No$GMB for Game Boy, FCEUXD for NES (which I pretty much never hack ), ZSNES and Geiger's SNES9X for (guess what) SNES.

Graphics: TLP, YY-CHR, and Tile Molestor.

IPS: LIPS.

SNES <-> PC: Lunar Address.

Game Boy <-> PC: PointerCalc, hacked to not be always on top.

Assembler: tniASM for Game Boy, SNESASM for SNES, though I often just write small hacks in Notepad and assemble them manually (especially on Game Boy; I can just type them in No$'s debugger ).

Other: Several instances of Notepad. Occasionally I write a small program for one specific task if none of the others can do it. Windows Calculator every now and then.

Replacing isn't adding, though. What if you used them all and want to add more? SMW hackers often have the same basic problem with running out of Map16 tiles.

Well then, why not link to some of those tools, or better, their source codes? At least give some names to search for? Just saying "there's programs that do it" is fairly pointless.

The little 'GLITCH' after beating iggy is meant to be a crystal shard. It honestly looked brilliant in TLP, but looks rubbish in the hack. Will have to edit.

You probably drew it in the wrong colours.

I KNEW there was a soundtrack, from like 4 years ago when I found a music list in memory. I never got it enabled though.

Now if only I still had this game.
