Haha, that happened to me once. I had no idea WTF happened, I thought the game had gone completely insane. I found out eventually though.
And speaking of SMK... A few times I'd take a wide turn past the left edge of the finish line on Koopa Beach 1, and I'd be too far to the left and it wouldn't count the lap! Little design flaw there.

I guess what was disappointing with MKDD in general. The music for me, it just didn't have the good notes that the earlier ones did and the fact that they reused 6 themes. That got old for me.

I can barely hear MKDD's music. It's quiet, and the sound effects are loud.

Fancy words! You can exponentially locate resource data in a ROM by carefully corrupting the ROM. Start at the end and work your way to the beginning, since game program data is typically at the beginning of the ROM. Set the entire second half of the ROM to 0x00 using a corrupter. Load the result in an emulator. If your resource did not change, then you know that it is in the first half of the ROM and you can repeat the process. If your resource did change, then you know that it is in the second half of the ROM and you can repeat the process. It's a win/win!

And if both of these cause the game to crash? It's far more likely to work if you just corrupt one ROM bank (or half of one) at a time, and start narrowing it down once you find interesting results. It's also important to remember than just because the resource in question changed doesn't mean you found it - you could have messed up some code, graphics etc that caused it to look different.

Or maybe a monsoon came through and there's a huge storm, forcing Luigi into some ruins. Or maybe just some huge apocolyptic event deforming all of Mario's levels, causing Luigi to have to play through in a new light.

I love those kind of things <3

That wouldn't make sense if Luigi went through first, though. Just have Luigi take a different path through the same area.

Also, when you're Mario you should see Luigi jumping around in the background occasionally, and vice-versa.

A disassembler will convert the ROM to a huge chunk of ASM source code. However, assemblers generally don't know the difference between code and data, so even the data parts will be turned into nonsense code. Disassemblers also usually add a lot of line numbers and addresses, and just print ??? for unknown instructions, so you'll have quite a hard time reassembling it. Not really worth the time. What I usually do is make my changes in the debugger, then write them in with a hex editor if they're small, or write actual ASM source, assemble it with tniASM (perfect for this purpose) and copy it into the ROM.

For hacking, be sure to pick up BGB, an emulator with probably the best GameBoy debugger available. (To hell with that no$gmb crap... it sucks.)

In my experience both are ridiculously buggy. No$ has a memory leak in the debugger and usually crashes if you try to reload the ROM, and you can pretty much forget about being able to specify a ROM on the command line. BGB's interface is a crummy No$ ripoff, doing the wrong thing at the wrong time can crash or hang the emulator easily, and it pretty much has the same features.
In short: No$ = nice interface, lots of annoying little bugs. BGB = Works well, but interface will drive you mad.

I was thinking of making one too. (Also read some of the linked articles.)

When are they going to learn? The music industry survived just fine during the eras of records, 8-tracks, tapes, and so many unprotected CDs, despite piracy. People don't want to pay super-inflated prices for something they can barely use. It's the main reason I don't buy these things anymore. If I want music I download some nice public-domain stuff or put the radio on. When I want to watch a movie I go to the theater. It'll be a cold day in hell that you catch me knowingly buying anything that supports DRM. I think this quote from one of those pages sums up my opinion well:

The only solution to Digital Restrictions Management is for all of us "consumers" (what was once called customers) to refuse to buy anything that is encumbered. And to encourage all of friends and family to do the same.

If we simply roll over and buy the RIAA's and the MPAA's crap, well, we deserve what we get.

But if we all will simply buy *only* what we really want, the vendors will get the message.

Changing some resources might appear to change the target resource without actually doing so. This is where it's important to think carefully about what you've found. In F-Zero Maximum Velocity, for example, the horizons are made up of a series of different image elements. After corrupting the ROM, let's say the horizon became totally black. Could this mean that part of the corrupted bytes were the horizon definition data? Yes. But don't assume that it is, since it could just as well have been that you overwrote the image data used for the horizon (thusly making it all black) and the horizon definition is actually somewhere else.

That's what I was saying. I like to use values like 0x01 or 0x20 when doing corruption; this generally makes it a bit easier to see what happened. Take an ordinary top-down RPG for example: if you were to corrupt graphics, you'd see several graphics replaced with straight lines (assuming they aren't compressed). If you hit TSA, you'd see a lot of different objects that use all the same tile. If you corrupted the map itself, you'd be in a map made entirely of one repeating tile (and in most games, the collision data would reflect this). Using 00 would net pretty much the same results for all 3. Random data works well too, but that makes it impossible to recreate the effect.
What's even better is if you know of an ASM instruction which is invalid (0xEB on the Gameboy, for example), and test in an emulator which reports these. This way if you corrupt code, when it's executed, you're likely to get an error along the lines of 'invalid instruction 0xEB' within the area you corrupted.
