I've looked before, most of the text is standard ANSI/ASCII* compressed in the MIO0 files. The phrase "BEWARE OF CHAINOMP" in one of the files' compressed area is a dead giveaway.

*Technically it's neither. I think the game just crashes if you use characters that high.

I'm actually working on Mario Kart 64 right now. The purpose of this was to scan save states from all 20 levels for the contents of every compressed file in the ROM, in order to generate a list of which files are loaded in which levels. This should help give me a general idea of which files contain what. Since two of the participants never actually sent back any results (wtf guys) I've got a P233 I threw together chewing on 3 of the remaining save states, and I'll have this computer tackle the remaining 4 tonight (and while I'm at school if need be). Unfortunately I didn't add any sort of indication of how much time is remaining*, so I don't know how long the other box is going to take, but it's been scanning for about 3 or 4 days now, so hopefully much longer. (This box, being about 7.2 times faster, would have taken 4.5 days to scan all 20 files. As only 3 are being scanned, if I did the calculations right, it should take about 1 or 2 more days.)

Anyway once that's done I'll have a nice list of what files are loaded in each level, so then I can try to filter out any that most likely aren't what I'm looking for. I'll also be checking to see if any patterns in the non-compressed areas are similar to Mario 64's level format.

*I would have, but I wrote the program to run in pure DOS so I could gain some speed by not having to load the Windows environment, giving all available resources to the program. I have little DOS programming experience and thus didn't know of any good way to time something (dunno how to get a millisecond count). Though it turns out programs compiled with MinGW won't run in pure DOS anyway, so it's a moot point.

You have to use the water path tiles when making the Mario paths. Unless you meant in the levels, in which case you should be looking at the block settings.

Also in this image:

Notice the springboard doesn't actually sit on top of the message blocks. It'll look odd just falling through when the level starts.

I think that's about enough flaming for this thread.

Though I must ask, Alastor: What would you have said in place of 'racist'? I realize this isn't technically correct, but it's the closest I can think of.

Can you load and use DLLs in Director? I imagine that'd be thousands of times faster, and it'd be easy to make a simple binary I/O DLL.

As for compression, though, HyperHacker and I have both encountered an anomaly when attempting to code MIO0 compressors. For an unknown reason (which I plan to investigate in the future), reading through the unencoded file linearly and simply checking with the previous 4096 bytes seems to yield larger files than the ones we decompressed from various ROMs. Apparently, a linear approach is not optimal, but neither of us have much of a clue as to why or how.

I remember you mentioned going through the file backward. I haven't tried this yet; have you?
Either way the output is still perfectly valid, just bigger, so it needs to be repointed. Maybe someone needs to look at RAM addresses 800404C0 and 800410C0 in Mario Kart 64 - they appear to be part of a compression routine. The game compresses Time Trials ghosts on the memory card using MIO0.

On a GB/GBC, ROM is mapped into addresses 0000-7FFF. This means only 32K is accessible at a time. Games get around this by using some hardware in the cartridge that allows them to chnage which parts of the ROM are mapped. Most games divide the ROM into 16K banks; bank 0 (ROM addresses 0-3FFF) is always mapped to 0000-3FFF, and any other bank can be mapped to 4000-7FFF.

Some code to convert raw ROM addresses to CPU bank/address and back:

/*
Converts a GB pointer to a file address
Inputs:
-Bank = ROM bank
-Addr = ROM address
Returns: file address
*/
int GBToFileAddr(int Bank, int Addr)
{
if(Bank <= 0) return Addr;
return (Bank * 0x4000) + ((Addr & 0x7FFF) - 0x4000);
}

/*
Converts a file address to a GB ROM bank
Inputs:
-Addr = file address
Returns: Bank
*/
int GetGBBank(int Addr)
{
if(Addr < 0x4000) return 0;
return ((Addr / 0x4000) & 0xFF);
}

/*
Converts a file address to a GB ROM address
Inputs:
-Addr = file address
Returns: Bank
*/
int GetGBAddr(int Addr)
{
if(Addr < 0x4000) return Addr;
return (Addr & 0x3FFF) + 0x4000;
}

The screen can display a whopping 4 different colours. Each pixel has a value from 0 to 3. There are three I/O registers that allows you to select which colour each value corresponds to; one for backgrounds, and two for sprites. (Sprites have an attribute bit that selects which to use.) This is also how GBC and SuperGB colourize games; they assign various colours to each pixel value.

I'd be wary of buying a premade system that cheap. I really doubt it can be upgraded beyond having a bigger HD and maybe twice as much RAM, and I wouldn't be too surprised if it's slow and breaks down quickly.
