It's easy to tell in a lot of cases by comparing disassembled code. That's how it was found that Sony's XCP crap was doing this.

Which OS do you use? If it's Windows, a faulty driver could cause this. I'd also suggest finding what causes freezing most often, and removing one component at a time and trying to get it to freeze; once it stops, add them back one at a time, and keep trying different combinations. If you're lucky it'll only be a single defective device, though it could be two or more that don't like being together. Another possible cause is power problems, be it a failing PSU or the AC outlet.

I would look into getting a PCI network card, though. I have an MSI K8T Neo-V, and absolutely nothing even recognizes the onboard network most of the time. Sometimes it shows up in Windows, but doesn't work (always says the cable is unplugged). Interestingly the same happens with floppy drives, which always claim to have no disk inserted in any OS.

I was gonna make another comment about the crazy things linked there (specifically, that).

Dracoon makes an interesting point, though. How much cow crap do you think is produced on farms and just tossed out? It's probably not as rich, but in mass quantities, it could possibly be useful (aside from being fertilizer).

Everything in 3D is made of triangles. The game can store it as other things, but the graphics hardware generally breaks those down into triangles.

Off topic, how do you have 177 stars? I know 175, but that's the highest I've seen.

Wouldn't it be easier to just hack the ROM than to try to do it through some external memory viewer? Nemu has some nice debugging tools you could use.

Also, text in RPGs is generally displayed using some sort of script system. Going about your method, you'd probably find the code for the 'display text' script command. Then you'd want to backtrack to find out where the script itself is, see what command spawns the Goomba, and trace that. (And while you're at it, I bet a lot of people would love to know whatever details you can find about the script system.)

That's how the Gameboy Game Genie works too, so I'd assume so. They use some logic (an FPGA, I believe) to detect accesses to ROM and return their own data instead of what's on the cart. Similar hardware can probably be used for multiple systems, so they'd have had little difficulty making a SNES version that does the same as the existing NES version.

Reasons why this is an obvious fake:

1) Doesn't show how to actually get him. Mario isn't even present.

2) The video's frame rate is very, very low. Someone bored enough could easily have edited every frame by exporting them as images, Photoshopping them and importing them back into one very choppy video.

3) When "Luigi" is in the castle's main room, his hat seems to shift through several different shapes and sizes.

4) Luigi is the same height as Mario. In fact it's exactly the same model, except with the red parts turned green.

5) While things like his legs and gloves are sharp, all the green areas are blurry. It really looks exactly like someone went over them with the Paint tool in Photoshop.

6) No sound to verify that it's Luigi's voice.

7) In several frames after "Luigi" first goes outside, his head is squished and part of his nose is cut off. This is corrected as soon as his head moves, suggesting that the same image was copied and pasted into each frame where Mario's head didn't move.

Also, there is a Gameshark code that turns the red parts of Mario green. The information posted in the Mario 64 threads also explains how to make a much better fake.

Not sure, but I did find out something interesting. Recent DSes use a different flash chip to store the firmware. The write-protection on this chip protects everything except the part that stores settings. So any DS units with this chip are effectively unbrickable, unless you permenantly disable the write protection which would be pretty damn stupid.

WHAT THE HELL. You used Chrono Trigger as a test cartridge? Did you even think what might happen if something went wrong? For God's sake, Super Mario World carts are a buck each at any secondhand shop.

Seriously, though, nice work. FYI, you should definitely add a switch for the lockout chip as well, to re-enable it (just connect the pin you raised to whatever it was connected to). Some games (I believe Super Mario RPG is one) won't run without it.
