Due to launch next month, Krugle is a search engine designed for progammers. Apparently it searches web pages for pieces of open-source code and indexes them along with a description of what they do. Various forms of pattern recognition are used to determine what language the code is in. Sounds useful! |

Yeah, I've heard that one before. I like how it says you have to hold the joystick up to get it miscalibrated, then reset it in-game. Too bad the calibration and reset are all handled by the controller logic. The game doesn't even register any buttons being pressed when you press L+R+Start.
|
Also that two Marios trick, the pic looks fake enough, but you can also do it easily with a Gameshark. There's a code that creates a duplicate Mario where you're standing, he moves his body but stays in one spot. The one where you see Luigi in the waterfall does sound interesting, but given the requirements I'm guessing it's BS.

Yes, FlashMe is a firmware hack. Technically it's modifying the system, but when people say 'mod' I tend to think hardware hacking... all you do with FlashMe is stick something in a hole and run a program. |

Sounds like a defective CD drive, or it doesn't have the proper drivers to be able to read it. If you go into DOS (not from Windows; use the startup menu) can you access the CD, or any others?
|
Also many old drives won't read CDRWs. (edited by Hyper LOL - + on 02-19-06 08:13 PM)

Listen to this man! There is NO EXCUSE for having a shitty layout with text that runs into the post like this:
|
Lol I'm a level 39 Fire Snake and I think pie is awesomeHow do you hack the ow? If you must use your stats and rank in your layout, do something creative and put them out of the way. Also notice how your rank has a line break in it; it looks stupid when used this way. Simple CSS can remove the break, text and/or image. This is also really annoying. See how you have to scroll to read it all? This is even worse if I decided to post screenshots of something:
See how annoying that is? Viewing the images becomes nearly impossible. Some people edit their post and remove the layout for posts containing large images - THIS DOES NOT WORK. Those who use the Auto-Updating option will still see the layout. If your layout has to scroll: 1) Rethink the design. Use an image that tiles well. If it's simply a generic background, here's a tip: Open it in mspaint or whatever, double the width and height, copy it, and paste it flipped horizontally at the right, vertically at the bottom, and both at the bottom right. This creates a tileable image. Don't do this with huge images, as they'll be 4 times as big. 2) Make some minor tweaks to allow stretching. It's not hard to make most images stretchable. You simply need to tile a small part of the image. I had some old layouts that did this very well (although the image was far too big and ugly due to filesize, but that's another story). Fixed widths are also bad. Notice how there's a lot of unused space to the right that that box could fill. Use percentages! Here's another thing that's annoying (highlight it):
Also, notice the size of that image. There are two very important factors to consider: Dimensions and file size. While the image is 800x600, it's only 17K, which should load pretty quick on all but the suckiest connections. An image with a huge file size is not good. A huge image, like your favourite 1280x1024 Dragon Ball Z wallpaper, is also usually not a good image to use in a layout. Even if its file size is small, chances are it's much bigger than your post area, thus looking like crap. (Also: animated GIFs with 400000 frames are going to be huge. This applies to avatars and minipics too.) And for God's sake DO NOT USE HUGE IMAGES IN YOUR HEADER, SIG, OR BESIDE YOUR POST! This is an example of how not to use a large image:
If you can't see why this is bad, please go jump in front of a fast-moving bus. EDIT BY ALASTOR: I shrunk the image because it was stretching the tables in 1024x768. Just imagine that it's twice the size it is now both horizontally and vertically. Another semi-common problem: The Terminal font DOES NOT SCALE in many browsers. Can you read this? Probably not! Fixedsys looks just as good. And of course, if someone views your post in a non-Microsoft OS, chances are they have no such font and the effect is ruined anyway. Also, nobody cares about your HP/MP/etc. Unless those status images work into your layout very well, put them in your bio. It's also important to consider how much processing power your layout requires. Abuse of translucency can really bog down a browser. Flash? Only if it's really small. Java? Forget it. Embedded music and/or video? DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE. Regarding CSS: There are good and bad ways to use CSS in a layout. DO NOT use . If your server or the viewer's Internet connection is acting up and the CSS doesn't load, many browsers will stop loading everything else to wait for it. Yes, this is stupid. No, abusing it as a form of protest won't change anything. Do this: And, make sure to use element names that don't conflict with the board or other layouts. Prepending your username or ID number is a good way to do this. This is especially important if you decide to copy someone else's layout (which may or may not get you yelled at) - you must change the element names, or they'll conflict and make a mess. Having a stable, fast host is also important. Also make sure your layout doesn't make [ Finally, remember that you are not writing an HTML page. You are writing part of an HTML page. and tags have no place in layouts, and ensure that your layout doesn't break tables. It's not exactly difficult to look in your bio, or make a quick test post. If the page suddenly looks like crap, you screwed up! If you can't fix it, remove it. Don't just leave it and say you'll fix it when you figure out how. It ruins the entire thread. I can't actually see a difference at 60hz, but it makes my eyes hurt after a while. And I can hear screens at a low refresh much more often than a high one. I can always tell when a TV is on, even if it's showing a black screen, because I can hear the high-pitched whine it makes; most TVs have a low refresh rate. Also, I heard the average person's refresh rate is a mere 24hz. Though if this is true, why don't screens look odd when they're not refreshing at a multiple of 24hz?
|
I've also thought about people percieving different colours, like that what one person sees as red may not be what someone else sees, but they both call it red. Really, the only way you could know is to tap into someone's brain and actually see what they see, or inject an image directly into their brain. (I've seen this done on TV; a simple image was 'uploaded' into a person's brain. Even though they were blind, they could see the image. But since they were blind, it doesn't really answer the question.) One of the biggest vision-related questions in my mind is what did the first images produced by digital camera look like? Were they way different than expected? Since digital cameras work a lot differently than our own eyes, they may see things differently. (Of course the design would have been quickly 'corrected' to see things as we do.) And I laugh at people using that machine to drive kids away. Great, I'll simply take my business elsewhere. (Even though I'm quite tolerant of high-pitched noises.)

When you say DOS can read it, how much did you try? You should at least do 'dir /s *.*' and see if it reports any errors that may indicate a drive failure.
|
Also, did you try running the setup program from DOS?

Heh, I love how Crysillion just doesn't get it. This hack can't be any good, because it won't fit within SMW's limitations? Inability to create NPCs or new enemies and edit the bosses will reduce the quality?
|
What the fuck. Let me tell you a few of the original SMW's limitations: Levels have to be arranged in a very specific order on the overworld. Objects can only use 2 Map16 pages. There are only 16 different tilesets, many of which share graphics. Graphics are restricted to 3BPP (8 colours). There are only a few different palettes which share many colours. The number of objects and sprites each level can use is significantly limited. Time limits can only be 200, 300, 400 or infinity. Levels 000-0FF can't link to or from levels 100-1FF. Lunar Magic itself removes these restrictions by simply reprogramming the game to overcome them. No, the original SMW engine can't support NPCs, but that doesn't mean they can't be used. Don't want to be stuck with SMW enemies? More than possible. You just have to code in support yourself. jp has already overcome several other limitations, such as adding the ability to switch Mario's graphics and allowing for cutscenes, by changing more of the code. Hell, look at how many custom blocks exist that do a lot of neat things the original SMW couldn't do. There were no blocks in the original SMW that boosted you to maximum speed or teleported you to another level. By your logic no hack could ever contain something that uses these, yet, dozens do. The whole point of ROM hacking is changing the game. If the original programming doesn't support what you want, then modify it. "It's still Super Mario World" - no it isn't! It merely uses mostly the same programming. Obviously I can't judge how well the game plays just from screenshots, but they look awesome. Originally posted by andres It was an extremely racist post (lets nuke japan again lol) and violated quite a few rules.
