No it won't. It might not work in some other editors that way, but then you can just remove it.

Wouldn't it be better, easier, and far more legal to just write your own sound engine to put in other games? If you're trying to rip from SO, that's another thing, but if you just want the sound code, writing your own would probably save a lot of headaches.

Posted on 02-19-06 02:55 AM, in Bomb warning at our school Link
What would be the point of telling the staff you planted a bomb if you really did? If someone's planting bombs in a school, I imagine they'd want people not to know until it goes off.

Heh, my school had those colour codes too, but they were just simple code red/blue warnings. Red for something violent (like if someone comes in with a gun), blue for other things (chemical spill, fire etc). Never once used them, except in a single drill. Worst they ever had was someone bringing a fake gun several years ago. Lot of fights and false fire alarms though. (Generally being pulled, though one time they just kept going off for no reason, and people were actually told to ignore them. Surprised nobody started a fire at the time. )

Although we had a really big thunderstorm (rain and lightning in February, which is pretty damn rare here) a few days ago, coating the roads with thick ice. So Thursday and Friday were both snow days.

At least twice throughout its life, I've had the board display an entire thread, and then at the bottom (after the Powered By Acmlm image), another thread started halfway through one of its posts. Also got two error messages at once one time, both saying the thread I was posting in was closed, but worded differently.

[edit] This thread, containing a few instances of a very broken layout, is doing similar, with no new thread/reply buttons at the bottom. I guess it could just be Shyguy's layout causing it in the screenshot then.

I've had that happen both when something got stuck in an optical mouse's sensor (no random clicking though) and when one's cord shorted out (also jammed the keyboard).

I beg to differ. You really only need that much RAM if you're playing the latest, greatest games or working with large files. For the average user, especially one on a budget, 256MB is still perfectly fine. Heck, my main computer only has 192MB, and the last time the page file was accessed was in January.

All depends what you do. I use Azureus a lot, which can eat up 350MB itself, and lololol (especially with often 8+ tabs) isn't too RAM-friendly either. My system runs at a snail's pace with the 256MB it has now; I'm planning to upgrade to 1GB (and 400 rather than 333mhz sticks) sometime soon.

The speed of your RAM and hard drive are surprisingly significant factors, though.

Yes, I do tend to waste a lot of time (I spent most of today sleeping, playing video games, and watching TV). However I simply will not allow myself to go without doing something productive each day (usually programming). Problem is I work on too many projects at once, so they take forever to finish.

269 has no real meaning to me, though it does have 69 in it. My old ID (218) was an anagram of my ID before that (1802) if you included a leading zero though. (Standard byte swap, even. 1802 -> 0218. Too bad it's not hex. ) And 1802 is almost 1804 which is the hex map ID of New Bark Town in Pokémon G/S.

My guess is it's one of those games with weird-ass programming that uses on-cart RAM instead of the Gameboy's internal memory. Super Mario Land 2 does this too. No Gameboy cheat device I know of searches this memory range, and I don't think Gameshark can write to it.

Posted on 02-19-06 05:12 AM, in Nintendo Announces DS Lite and other goodies! Link
Time for some funfun DS tech facts:
  • The DS has 3 BIOSes; one for ARM7, one for ARM9, and the GBA one. They're ROMs (embedded in the CPU core even) and can't be written to. These provide code that games can use for various things (decompression, math, sound etc) and initiailze the hardware at bootup.
  • The DS also has firmware, which is on some manner of flash ROM and can be written to. This contains the code that launches games and the startup menu and is thus essential for operation. A virus could indeed ruin the system by wiping this out.
  • The firmware chip has a safety feature; without poking something conductive in a hole under the battery cover, the first 64K (or 512 bytes on some units) can't be written to. Standard Nintendo firmware doesn't take advantage of this, but the hacked firmware FlashMe (which provides the ability to run homebrew and removes that crappy health warning) uses it. Code in this sector will immediately execute whatever program resides on the GBA cart without initializing anything if a certain key sequence is held at bootup; this program can then restore working firmware.
  • A DS bricker which overwrites the firmware does exist. However there's no way to just send malicious code to someone's DS, due to the RSA encryption/signing used. There are only two ways to run unsigned code on a DS, both of which exploit the poor design of the games' header 1 to trick the system into booting whatever code is on the GBA cart. (The idea being you put code on a flash cart.) Although you can do this wirelessly on most units (newer ones block it), it still only boots from the GBA cart, so you can't send actual code.2 (In short, the only way to get infected by it is to run it yourself.) Also, interesting fact; the bricker will be picked up by antivirus programs on a PC.

1. The header contains the addresses of the game's startup code. The DS jumps to these addresses once the game is loaded into memory. However, the addresses aren't part of the signed area, so they can be changed (to point to the GBA slot) without breaking the signature. Newer firmware won't allow them to point to the GBA slot; exploits get around this by pointing them to data within the game binary which happens to be the instruction to call an invalid SWI. This results in random data being executed; eventually, it jumps to an area in the GBA cart SRAM, which can contain some unsigned code.
2. Only true of stock DSes. FlashMe removes the RSA signature check in DS Download Play, so you can boot unsigned code without a GBA cart. However, you need such a cart (and to disable the firmware write protection) to install FlashMe anyway. Technically this means someone could broadcast a bricker and have it infect FlashMe users. However, since FlashMe also provides a quick and easy way to restore the firmware, it'd be fairly pointless.
