Your logic is flawed in a number of ways:
-If Fu hadn't made LM, someone would see that there was no SMW editor and decide to make one in Java? There are a lot of people who see that X game has no editor and decide to write one. How many of them use Java? Very few.
-An editor written in Java would be better? Unlike every Java program ever, LM uses very little memory and CPU power and doesn't have a lot of weird quirks. ( @ Tile Molestor's menus.) Really, an open-source editor, or at least LM ports on Linux and Mac, would be best.
-Because LM exists, nobody can make another SMW editor? How many different SMB3 editors are there? In fact, there is another SMW editor, it just isn't nearly as good.

Anyway, to answer the question: There'd be less SMW hacks, that's about it.

I'm pretty sure someone already made a game to his specifications, at which point he claimed the money offer was a joke.

Personally I'd like to see his take on The Sims 2 or 3 or whatever it was I saw my brother playing the other day. You could have everyone gather around and smoke a bong.

Aren't there any free binary I/O components you could use?

Also what browser do you use? In lololol if a post doesn't go through, I just hit back and it's still there. If your browser doesn't do this, then I'd suggest writing your posts in Notepad, or at least copying them before you submit them.

Actualy, I tried to tackle the original DK with a hex editor but to absolutly no avail. I'm near convinced there's some sort of odd compression going on with the level format (but really....why? There's 3 levels ), and I sort of gave up after that

So that's why mine got so messed up. If the overworld editor is overwriting the graphics, then adding the graphics is probably messing up the overworld.

Regarding Map16: I suggest having one block, maybe # 0xFFF, be a trigger - make it invisible and act like tile 0x25, and if that's the block at 0,0, then the number of the block at 0,1 determines various parameters. I think it may be possible, with some hex editing, to use the Direct Map16 Access feature of LM to be able to specify the high byte directly. LM places fake objects into the level data which trigger ASM hacks that write to the Map16 table when you use this; you could hex-edit those objects to change what they write. (The values they write are in the object data itself.) Depending how the hack is coded you might be able to hex-edit them to write values beyond what LM will let you use, like 0xFFFF. Then the block at 0,1 could be a 2-byte parameter for your hacks (maybe some bitflags specifying which to activate). Once you've read them, just write 0x25 or whatever to the byte that specifies the block at 0,1, so you don't end up with garbage in the level.

(Sorry if this is hard to understand, I'm writing quick because I have to leave like right now. )
