I'd probably assume the ears were fake until seeing the lack of actual human ears. Then I'd probably just stare for a while, rubbing my eyes in disbelief.

Actually, I've pondered before about the similarities between really really simple basic life forms and computers. Especially considering brains are electric and silicon-based life is theoretically possible; one has to wonder how different the two really are.

Probably a lot of nonsense but what the hell.

I have one of those pirate carts, it runs on a real NES though. Literally 255 games in one, but a lot of them are just hacks of the same game (SMB1, SMB1 where you always have firepower, SMB1 where you always swim, SMB1 where you always swim and have firepower, SMB1 where you start on world 0, etc).

Posted on 01-19-06 11:23 AM, in "Hack" - What's in a Name? Link
This really depends on interpretation. As BGNG said dictionaries tend to define hacking as modifying a computer program. Now suppose I open up a ROM, reverse-engineer some code, and figure out how I could modify it somehow, and document this method so others may make this modification, but never actually make it myself, have I hacked it? What if I modify it in memory but don't save?

However it's important to note that dictionaries don't define a word's meaning, only document it. Words constantly change, with their meanings being ever so slightly altered, new meanings being applied, old ones being phased out, and words being introduced or not used anymore. 50 years ago or so words like 'golly' were common, now they're generally considered outdated. The dictionary didn't cause this. Also 'access' used to be a noun (to have access), but is now often a verb (to access), simply because people started using it as one. And you can bet people didn't start saying 'pot' to refer to marijuanna because the definition suddenly started popping up in dictionaries. The definition is there (I assume ) because people started using it.

Posted on 01-19-06 11:38 AM, in ROM-less Editing - It is Not Unreasonable Link
It's certainly possible, but in most cases impractical. Consider your FZX editor. It can create courses without a ROM, sure, but you need one to test the created courses, modify existing ones, edit other things (vehicle stats perhaps; this could be done without a ROM, but it'd be difficult to work that way), and eventually you need to insert all the data into one anyway lest you simply have a lot of cool 3D shapes.

Graphics are one of the biggest issues. You can do it without a ROM but then you're stuck with the built-in graphics. If you make your own in the ROM, the editor still shows the old ones. Extracting them allows you to use them without the ROM, but you still need it to extract them in the first place.

Most online editors, I imagine, just have a copy of the ROM on the server and modify it in memory. Assuming it was aquired legally, this should be legal because the ROM is never distributed.

One final interesting note: There's some Tetris Attack editor that edits the levels right in ZSnes's memory. This can be considered ROMless as the editor doesn't need to ever access the ROM, but then the emulator still needs it. The biggest issue in this case is how the editor works. If it modifies the ROM stored in memory, then it's no different than a standard editor. If, on the other hand, it modifies the decoded level data in the emulated RAM (which I imagine it does), then it's quite different. It never needs to access the actual ROM and could theoretically edit a knock-off PC version using the same format, hence no ROM involved.

If you must use keys for everything, at least use the F keys and Ctrl/Alt combos. That's what they're for.

USA Standard, though I'm in Canada. Canadian Standard replaces slashes and such with various French characters, which makes typing paths difficult. I've considered DVORAK but I haven't actually used it yet.

I can also switch to a Japanese layout when I need to.

Yeah, IE == Windows Explorer. Try it: Open a folder, then type a web address in the URL bar. You'd be better off trying to prevent it from actually connecting to any web sites. If you use a router you could block port 80, that would prevent most pages from loading. Or try to find a way to block connections to the DNS server, though you could still use the site's IP if you knew it.

Posted on 01-20-06 10:59 PM, in Windows Metafile Exploit Link
Given how many times MS 'fixes' something only to have the patch open up another hole or only prevent one specific exploit method out of many, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that this was the case. However I would think they'd at least use some signing or similar to prevent anyone but themselves from being able to exploit it.

Interesting point, though... If someone were to reverse-engineer Windows and find a back door, what would happen? To do so would be illegal, but so would the back door itself. This is actually how the problem with Sony's XCP was found; they assumed they were protected, since to discover what it was doing (and that the EULA was void), someone would have to 'illegally' reverse-engineer it. However, the guy who did got off on a technicality - since it disguised itself, he had no way to know it was part of XCP without REing it anyway.

We can't delete, but you never said anything about cutting or commenting out errors. Besides, all you have to do is type slow.

But fuck that.

Sometimes I make a lo t of types, other times I'm really accurate. It dpends on m the angle U I sit ayt, and but it's also mostly random.
(Fun fact: 2 of the 3 things crossed out there weren't typos, just cases where I decided to use a different word. )
