I tend to get weird shit like that when I stay up a long time too. After about 65 hours I actually have full-blown visual hallucinations, and think I'm doing something completely different than I actually am.

Also I've seen that picture-still-on-the-TV thing before. I actually had a TV once that wouldn't turn off; when you tried, the screen would dim, the sound would stop, and it wouldn't change channels or whatnot, but you could still see the picture, moving. Also with my current TV, sometimes after I turn it off, there's still a very bright green dot in the middle.

TVs are weird.

Yes, but that's not true. I always wear underpants, so I could just use them. And chances are, there's a shower there.

...OK fine. If through some weird glitch in the fabric of time these really are the only options whatsoever, then like I said, use the magazine. Buy them a new one if it's that important to them.

Interesting semi-related question... what about decompiled game source codes? Like if you take the ROM and reverse-engineer it into a fully labelled, editable source code, without ever having seen the original code, how legal is the code you've created? You could argue that it's just the ROM itself in another format, but then you could also say it's code you wrote yourself, designed to function according to a very strict specification (the way the ROM does).

Possibly, but it's probably some code in the Culex battle script that plays that music. What you'd want to do is something like this:
1) Find out how, exactly, to start a music track.
2) Find where the game starts the 'win battle' track.
3) Change it to start the FF music instead. (Probably just changing a pointer or track number.)

Step 1 would be the hard part, since the game's music engine is fairly complicated. The debug menu would probably be a huge help.

Changing all the boss music would probably be done similarly. However, it may also be that each boss's battle script sets the music, in which case you just tweak that a bit.

Not only that, but depending how exactly you decompiled it and what assembler/compile you rebuild it with, the output may not be 100% identical. Especially if you decompiled it into C code, where different compilers with different settings and different optimizations may generate very different code which is still functionally identical. Even in ASM, an assembler might optimize differently than the original (or you might even go in yourself and make some tweaks/fix some bugs/etc). The result is a program that still functions exactly like the original, but no longer is the original; if compared you'd most likely find large portions modified and shifted around.

This could be viewed about the same as converting a downloaded MP3 to another format or a different bit rate, but are they truly the same? MP3s aren't programs after all.

And what if you recompiled this code for a different platform? It's no longer the original and chances are the raw data's not even close to matching, but it still does the same thing.

Actually, judging by this:
By default, Explorer on those operating systems runs in a restricted mode known as Enhanced Security Configuration, which Microsoft said mitigates this vulnerability as far as e-mail is concerned, although clicking on a link in a message would still put users at risk.

It sounds like some browsers might execute the code while IE just shuts down. (Still, remote crashing is bad. ) Really, if inline images don't trigger it, then it's not exactly as critical as it sounds. I don't see why they wouldn't, though. The bug is in the GDI, which is used to draw nearly all images whether they be inline in a web page or BMPs in MSPaint or the desktop background. (The only exceptions are programs that use DirectX or OpenGL, or have their own image drawing code for some reason.)

I guess the only way to be sure would be to make a test image and try it. But for that I'd have to find how exactly to use the exploit and write the code in ASM, which I'd rather not do. (ASM + Windows = Pain!)

Yeah, it's funny what people do when they're tired. I've been known to turn the volume up when I see something cool.

What's even funnier, though, is when I first wake up. It takes my brain a minute or two to start up, and during that time, it just plain does not work. I'll do crazy things like get up, notice my alarm clock is going off, wonder why it's going off (when it really should be), shut it off, then a minute later think "lucky I woke up on time... why didn't my alarm clock go off?".

You'd need a very specialized circuit. I think the SGB's workaround was that border it added. The GB's screen is smaller resolution-wise, hence the lower frequency.

Adapting the controller is probably possible but I wonder if it might be easier to just rip the logic bits right out and run wires from each button to the traces on the GB's mainboard where its buttons connect.

Really I'd suggest you learn either Z80 or 65816 ASM and turn them into GB/SNES development systems, wired up to your computer such that you can have them download and execute code.

Agreed. It's dropped to -40 here in a few cases. (Interesting note: -40°C == -40°F. )

Last summer I went out camping with my dad... if you knew him, I wouldn't have to say any more, but yeah. We toured around Ontario doing various things... I don't really remember what order we did them in, but one thing we did was camp out at a trout farm. Whoo, let me tell you, there must have been a starving mousquito for every blade of grass there. Basically like Toxic described, except instead of a lot of big ones, there were busloads of normal-sized ones. Figured we'd be alright once we got the tent set up, but it was dark and we couldn't see WTF we were doing. We had a flashlight but it was dying. Then we started inflating the air matresses... the pump died and one had a hole in it. We packed up and got a hotel instead.

Of course, getting to the hotel wasn't much better. We had no idea where we were going and they were no help. They gave us wrong directions and told us to go the wrong way down a one-way street!

Eventually we made it to Ottawa and of course he had to go see the war museum. We got there 20 minutes after it closed. So we had to come back the next day. It was kinda cool, but my feet disagreed.

At another point we went to our Grandpa's place for about 2 weeks. The most boring 2 weeks ever. I had my DS but no games I wasn't bored of and no money to buy any more. TV? We could either go upstairs and watch whatever boring war show he was watching, or find something on the one in the basement, which was difficult because the cable box was incredibly slow and he barely had any channels, and none of them were at all entertaining except for the occasional Simpsons episode. So basically no TV. I ended up just drawing. I normally suck at drawing but these actually came out pretty good - since it was the only thing to do, I didn't mind re-drawing something 80000 times until it looked right.

Overall it was boring as hell... but I got a computer out of it! Just bought all the parts at whatever places we went by.

Yeah, everyone gets 100 and it refills periodically. I don't see why they don't just make it public at this point.

Also, at 90% of schools, you barely need to be able to work a keyboard to get around content filters. And local security systems aren't much better.

I had Cogeco, it rocked hard. Fast and reliable and even though your IP was supposedly dynamic it never changed. Best tech support ever too, and didn't block a damn thing. But, you guessed it... 15GB cap. They didn't really seem to care if you went over (unless it was WAY over, but I only did that once and convinced them it was a virus ) but I didn't want to risk the idea that they might. (They have a 30GB package for $20 more, but that still isn't enough, especially when Sympatico is unlimited for $5 more.)

So now I have Sympatico... totally stable and fairly fast, and no cap. Unfortunately the tech support sucks and they seem to be doing something to BitTorrent... it works fine but the light is always yellow. I get good up/down speeds, finish the downloads, upload for however long, but it stays yellow. (Maybe it's just a bug in the client... )

I'm with BMF... bandwidth caps are a gyp. Their only purpose is to stop people eating up all the bandwidth (and if that's a problem, then they need to supply more and/or upgrade their lines) and hamper piracy (like there isn't 15GB of legal things I want to download in a month). They're so last decade. Get with the times!
