At EB Games a while ago I saw a PS3 demo hooked up to a hi-definition TV showing its capabilities. One demonstration was a comparison of a Blu-ray movie versus a DVD. I shit you not they were identical. I also liked the bit on Cell, which showed blue lights (electrical pulses I suppose) flying around a circuit board. Then they added a bunch more to show how Cell can do more things at once. However, all the pulses were just moving in very small circles. Cell: Does nothing 8 times faster!

Linux is nice but there are three main reasons I'm not using it now.

1) It's too diverse/not standardized enough. All the different distributions, kernels, and window managers; how am I to know if this program works with GNOME V2.46 on the version of GenericLinux kernel V3.47 "Jones" that works with an AMD Sempron with less than 2GB of RAM and an integrated RAID controller and BIOS V3.1 with the ATAPI I/O bug and USB support and the computer placed below the monitor? (Hell, how do I know if this is even the kernel I should be using?) Compile it myself? OK, what do I do about the 11 pages of compile errors? Oh I bought this new MP3 player that connects to USB, how do I get it working in Linux? Compile a new kernel? Great, so much for doing anything today.

2) It doesn't support any of my hardware. I thought Linux was supposed to be good with old/cheap stuff, but no distro I've tried will boot at all on my main computer and the Ubuntu I put on an older computer for testing purposes doesn't support serial mice by default nor those old-style keyboards (with the big round plug) at all (the lag makes it completely unuseable, you type one key and end up with 200 characters).

3) The command line is not user-friendly at all. The command to delete a file is rm, to copy a disk is dd, to edit a text file is vi... what happened to del, diskcopy, and edit? Can commands not have more than 2-letter names in Linux? What's this command do, I'll just run it with no parameters to see if it'll tell me... oh it's a tool that wipes disks, WTF IT JUST DELETED MY PARTITION TABLE. Hm, I need to rename this file... "rm blah.txt foo.txt"... oh shit I typed rm instead of rn now my file is gone.

#2 isn't so much a problem because I know my hardware sucks, but obviously I can't use it if it won't run.

Posted on 02-08-07 10:59 PM, in Can't import audio in Flash 8 Link
Just installed Flash 8 Basic, created a new document, tried to put some sound in it. Winamp plays this MP3 fine (and the WAV I converted it to), but Flash doesn't.

If I import by File -> Import -> Import to Library, I get an error: "One or more files were not imported because there were problems reading them." With an MP3 file, nothing happens. With a WAV, it adds two copies to the library and asks if I want to replace the first copy. The sound just shows up as "Sound not loaded" and I can't play it.

If I check the properties of this object I can import/update from another sound file. This error is even less descriptive: "Sound import failed."

[edit] Looks like I can import with some hackery: Try (and fail) to import a WAV, then in its properties, click Update and choose the MP3 I want. WTF?

DOS is dumb, yes. Nobody uses DOS anymore though. Windows' command line is surprisingly powerful while still having the same syntax as DOS.

I didn't listen to Microsoft at all. This comes from my experience using Linux. Some distros might do it for you but you still have to choose a distro, compile a kernel specific to your hardware, and choose a window manager. How can you ensure any given program will work with any given combination of distro, WM, and the 4000 options you chose from to compile this specific kernel? How do I know if my CPU supports the BINZACSAPOATIT instruction?
(Also, show me Linux running on a Magnavox MCV604?)

2. You thought wrong; the more popular hardware is obviously more supported. Should probably think more when you buy things... it's really not that hard to get compatible hardware with everything.

My train of thought when buying this hardware: "Can I afford this? Yes. Can I afford anything better? No. Can I save up for something better? No, because it'll be ages before I can get to a computer store again."
I'm constantly hearing comments like "a 486 is still a useable machine if you run Linux" and "Linux supports my [insert very old device] great", and obviously since Windows is so damn bloated Linux should have lower requirements. And probably the most important point here: Windows supports it fine, Linux chokes on it.

3. Unix is older; GNU is modelled after Unix. It makes sense that it doesn't copy DOS. Besides you can make aliases. On top of this, just install Ubuntu, you still have a huge misconception you have to do everything with the CLI.

I've had to do everything with the CLI so far, because Ubuntu wouldn't recognize a serial mouse and still won't recognize the old keyboard. At best I've managed to log in and find the menus not working. There's also no reason they can't make these aliases automatically for people who are used to DOS. Maybe more people would use Unix-based OSes if they did this.
Being based off an old OS is the very reason Windows sucks, IMO. OK, so back in the days before DOS, it made sense for programs not to ask before doing something dangerous nor provide help as to what they do, because that extra text might be too much to fit in RAM and you probably had nothing important stored on the computer and if you had one you were probably capable of writing your own OS anyway. That's not the case now. Why is Linux still using such old standards that no longer make sense?

If I ever actually release an SMW hack, it'll use at least some SMAS and YI graphics. Why? A) I think they look great. B) I can not draw, period. That simple. Every day I wish I could, maybe someday I'll learn how, but right now, no. I'd say a bigger problem than overuse of SMAS graphics is use of SMAS graphics in some places, then other graphics with completely different styles in other places or even together.

Anyway this hack looks amazing. Most of the problems I see have been pointed out already. However:

Plain SMW graphics here, and high-colour SMAS/YI graphics everywhere else? This does not fit the overall graphic style at all.

Also:

HOLY FUCK. The level does look fairly plain here, but the background is stunning. However, the cloud at the top kinda clashes.

Finally:

I want to touch it.

Well I know what I want it to do but I have no idea what it's called. I'm looking for a program that takes several small images and arranges them to look like one big one. The attached image demonstrates this, but it's not very good - I need really high resolution, such that if you were to zoom out far enough, it'd be almost identical to the original image (because that's what I plan to do ). If possible, I'd like to see it choose actual dark images for the black parts too instead of just choosing random images and darkening them. Obviously, I need to be able to choose both the images that will be mixed together and the image that they will try to approximate (just as you can see here, the large owl is made of many small pictures of owls). Does anyone know of one?

Hm, there was some Star Wars game for the Gamecube (not sure which) and as usual my brother was playing it with cheat codes. He had some special weapon which I guess you're not supposed to have at that point, and fired it at this enemy ship during a boss battle (he was some guy inside a building shooting at a ship outside) and the ship just disappeared. Then it just played the victory cutscene, showing just a few pieces of the ship flying away.

Of course. I'm sure a piece of data can rewrite read-only memory to be completely worthless.

Eh, I've had a lot of Pokémon R/B/Y carts just die for no apparent reason, even without hacking or glitching. Same with Super Mario Land carts which happen to use the same memory controller chip (MBC1). I suspect they just had defective MBC1 chips, and the Missingno glitch might have accelerated whatever triggered the defects.

Posted on 02-10-07 06:33 AM, in Plugin? Link
Yep, I made a simple plugin system using that method, it works well. You can even give each plugin its own thread and set up an exception handler so it won't take out your entire program if it crashes. There's also some way (LoadLibraryEx()?) to load the DLL without calling DLLMain() or whatever the function is that gets called at unload, which allows you to load the plugin without it being able to execute any code yet; this is generally a good thing as it ensures buggy, malicious or poorly designed plugins won't be able to cause trouble (even something as simple as malloc()ing a huge buffer could be trouble) until they're actually executed. In a cross-platform system obviously you won't be using these functions anyway.

Also, you can put a resource in the DLL containing information such as the plugin's name, version, etc and read it out from your program. Not sure how you'd do this on other platforms though.
