There's a difference between non-linear and having to go back and forth across the same path 8 times without being hit. Look at Super Mario 64. It was non-linear, but it rarely had you backtracking.
The goal of a video game is to provide entertainment. Playing a ridiculously hard game is not entertaining.

What is making the hack too hard for people is that you have no weapon, a huge number of enemies lurking around in the rooms, less health pickups, and a few other things.

There. You just said it yourself. TOO HARD.

The layout of the dungeons themselves has nothing to do with any of this. It can aggrivate it by making you backtrack, but the backtracking alone is not the main factor.

No, but if the backtracking is aggrivating, then it should be changed. No matter how good you are at the game I don't think you're going to enjoy doing the same task over and over, especially when that task is very difficult. I consider myself good at Diddy Kong Racing, but I wouldn't enjoy just playing the same level several times in a row.

Furthermore, one of the creators of the hack has noted that the hack is extremely difficult. Thus, he is probably accepting that the widest possible audience will not be able to complete his hack.

Well if the idea is to make something that's fun for people who are really really good at the game, then fine. That doesn't excuse boring/annoying repitition or bugs.

I would actually say a majority of the ones I've tried have been quite a bit more difficult than the original game they're based on.

Thank you.

So it's a bitflag. Bit 0 toggles flight (1=yes), bit 1 toggles sliding (1=no).

Yes, but then I got a good CF card and all was well. Not all flash memory cards work at the same speed.

Not to mention if you decide to pocket your DS and it slides around a little too much in your pocket the shoulder buttons will change the song. In the API it is easy to tell if the DS is shut, I don't understand why they didn't disable button presses when the thing is shut.

Look for "ClosedSholderButton" (sic) in global.ini. You can have the L/R buttons always enabled, disabled, or enabled only when the lid is open.

good luck finding a huge flashcart

With M3 out there's no reason to even bother buying a standard GBA flash cart. Supercard too, but its GBA support is poor.

Now... what is nice about it is the total lack o' DRM. I will give it that.

It's open-source, even.

This is every Zelda game. You've played the originals, LTTP and the 3D ones, right? They're all "search dungeon for random crap and keys and stumble upon where you're supposed to go." I don't see how you can complain about this factor when it equates to complaining about every Zelda.

I think the difference is in the originals, sometimes you'd have to go back a ways to find something, whereas in this, you have to go back over and over to find many things with no indication as to where they might be. Backtracking occasionally is one thing, backtracking repeatedly is another.

Seems to be a perfect example of someone forgetting the golden rule of level design:

Levels you create will always be easier to you than to everyone else, because you have that much extra experience and know all the tricks and shortcuts.

As well as perhaps the silver rule: Glitch exploitation is bad.

YD FTW.

I don't remember 2003 much, but judging by the dates on various files scattered about my hard disk, I must have stopped being a total n00b sometime in late 2003 or possibly early 2004. Pretty much everything I see that I made in 2003 makes me go "WTF, what the hell was I thinking when I made this", and I don't really have any files from before then (some screenshots from 2002) so yeah.

Maybe someday I should consider digging through old logs and such to determine about when I got that old computer, that'd give me a general clue as to just how long ago I got into all this ROM hacking business.

All the money, well, that's already been mentioned. But if I had a few billion, I'd probably buy myself a tropical island waaaaay out in the middle of nowhere, somehow get a fucking fast Interweb connection there (screw the laws of physics, I have money ), maybe buy a sports car or something like that, etc. Buy a hella powerful computer, sound system, and projector screen. Go through college, uni etc. Put away enough to buy myself food, water, electricity etc for the rest of my life, ideally in some sort of bank (security + interest ftw), as well as some extra for future purchases and emergencies.

At that point I think I'd be pretty happy with my life so I guess the rest could go to charity or something.
