When did XP start coming with .Net? 
Anyway you're probably going to want to read the file one line at a time. Read until you find '\n', then copy 15 characters (the length of "bAllow30Shaders") to a separate buffer, and don't forget the null space at the end. Use strcmp() to see if the buffer you just copied to matches "bAllow30Shaders". If so, you've found your string, so update its contents in the buffer you read the file into, read in the rest of the file, and then write it back. If memory is a problem you might want to write each line to another file immediately instead of reading the entire file into memory. |

| It seems to be the number of writes that does it. Each time I've got one I've just filled it about halfway with MP3s and some other random junk, basically just copying an entire directory to it, and plugged it into my DS. After a while it'd start corrupting files and such. I suspected at first the DS apps might just be writing incorrectly, but with the second one, the first errors started showing up in Windows instead. Sometimes it'd just corrupt the filesystem and a format would fix it but after a few more writes it'd be toast.
The first one was interesting, it suddenly became 2GB and about 95% of sectors were unwriteable. No amount of low-level formatting and other hackery could do anything, and every program I tried showed 2GB. With the second it was only two bytes in every sector that became unwriteable (quite odd) but this was enough to render it useless, especially since that minor corruption would obliterate the directory structure. I noticed too that whenever anything was corrupted, Windows' error checking would always find exactly 10,000 lost files. I put maybe 300 max on them.  |

I think the first issue is to get the laptop fixed. Once you do that you can use it to burn a CD (though you may need an external USB CD burner) with the driver on it for your desktop. |

Thought it might be interesting to discuss unusual ways you've transferred files from one computer to another.

One time I was trying to set up this old computer with Win98, but it needed a lot of drivers. It had no USB, no network driver, and my desktop had no floppy drive, so there was pretty much no way to get the drivers onto it without disassembling it and sticking the HD in another computer or burning it to a CD, and since I only needed one file (once it had a network driver I could download the rest) and had no blank CDs it seemed quite a waste to do it that way. Then I got an idea... when I first got into N64 hacking with Gameshark, to test my CD burner I burned the hacking tools to a CD. So I loaded this program up on the desktop and proceeded to upload the driver into Mario 64's memory, then run the program on the other computer, copy it out of the N64, and run it. Worked great. Hm, one just called while I was in the middle of a game. I considered keeping them on the line as long as possible like Alastor mentioned but I wanted to get back to the game, so I opted for something dumber but faster. I paused the game and shut off everything noise, picked up the phone and said absolutely nothing. The guy seemed kind of uncomfortable but after like 15 seconds (I was about to hang up) he asked if he could talk to my dad. I just said "yeah, hang on" in a really weird voice and hung up. Like I said, dumb, but he didn't call back and I was amused at his reaction to me not saying anything.

Hah, I've been there, though not to that extent. When I got my new HD a few years ago it had me make a recovery disk of some sort. I went through 12 disks before I got one that worked. It's annoying when the write (which is sloooooow) completes just fine but THEN it tells you the disk is defective. |
