But can you use it like a flash drive without installing anything? As for charging, try the same USB port as your speakers. If that doesn't do it the system might just not be putting out enough power for it to realize it's being charged. Mine leaves the keyboard, mouse, and some (but not all) USB devices powered. Weird, but useful because I can charge my wireless mouse while it's off.

Yeah, that's the term I'm looking for. I wasn't expecting much support for it. Shame because it's a very nice card. I'ma try the PCI video card in a few minutes, but I still need to fix that sound bug, since I intend to pick up a TV-out card and use this as a media center system of sorts.

[edit] I think that video card may be toast. I got it working with an older one (crappy resolution/colours though ), but somehow that seems to have destroyed the network card that was installed (Windows no longer detects it at all, another one works fine). Anyway neither of them are much more use than the built-in video since it's TV-Out I need.

Been playing with the sound system. The distortion is definitely related to video. Dropping the resolution to 800x600 15bit (from the monitor's native 1600x1200 24bit) signifigantly reduces the distortion. There are two sound devices listed, CM8330 and CM8330 SB16. The former has crackling while the latter has a mechanical echo effect (voices sound like they're coming from a robot ) and no volume control. Really interesting is that if I minimize the player (Winamp or VLC) the distortion gets a lot worse...
The sound seems to work just fine with Winamp with Create Primary Buffer enabled, using the first sound device, at 800x600, as long as Winamp is not minimized. I'm hoping this problem might just go away when I install a new video card. Of course, if VLC can't do the same, then there's still a problem.
Minimizing Winamp just causes some crackling until I bring it back. Minimizing VLC completely destroys the sound until I restart it. Just using 1600x1200 with 15-bit colour lets it play just fine for about a minute before it starts breaking.

I'll have to poke at the BIOS settings and see if this can be fixed somehow... Pfft no.

The motherboard will almost certainly have a jumper or switch you can use (or battery you can remove) to clear the settings and password. After that, try testing/replacing these things in order:

  1. Drive cable
  2. Hard drive (listen close, does it spin up?)
  3. Disk controller if not built into the motherboard
  4. Power supply, cord, and outlet
  5. RAM (use Memtest86)
  6. Motherboard

Bad drive cables are obviously a likely cause of disk problems and the easiest/cheapest to fix. Hard drives also tend to die a lot faster than other parts since they're mechanical. Power issues or defective RAM can also cause tons of weeeeird problems (bad RAM was making my HD/CD-ROM fail just recently).

I think it might be cooler if it used Mario (SMW, YI, SMAS etc) or custom graphics. Just because you're using Metroid-style gameplay doesn't mean you need to copy Super Metroid entirely.

The game seems to have separate scroll position variables for the graphics and collision map. If you move really really fast or modify them in RAM, the two can get out of sync, so you're seeing screen 2 but colliding with screen 4.

It might be easier to go the other way, replacing images with characters. Otherwise, look at [object].innerHTML.

Posted on 11-16-06 10:34 PM, in How did you start? Link
I had no access to a computer, save for a broken Commodore 64 for a few weeks, until I was ~11. I made some dumb things in QBASIC, then moved on to hacking N64 games. I learned what ASM was and figured all games must be written in it since that's what you get when you disassemble them. So I got a library book on x86 ASM, read a bit, and was completely confused. I later made some very simple C programs such as one that tells you the ASCII value of a character or lists all characters' ASCII values. Eventually I picked up Visual Basic and learned how to make decent things. I moved to C when I started getting into things like emulators that VB just wasn't powerful enough for, and started learning PHP shortly after to make my web site. Somewhere in there I also started making simple ASM hacks of Game Boy games. (My first was an Infinite HP hack for Pokémon Red. I NOPed the part that writes your new HP rather than the part that subtracts it, so it still had some bugs; you'd lose no health if the attack wouldn't have killed you, but would still die if it would. Fixed it a bit later.) From there I learned the ins and outs of other assembly languages. HTML and javascript also go in there somewhere.

Memory leakage has pretty much been the biggest problem with lololol since its release. I've seen it get up to 200MB after a few hours ever since I started using it. Not a lot you can do except restart it every couple hours. It doesn't seem to go above 200MB so if you have a lot of RAM you may not even notice.

I recall hearing of a bug that can make this happen. IIRC, it's caused by corrupted registry entries in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (or the same in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) and the other Run keys nearby.

Meh, I don't think I'll find or need any support for the ISA card.

Anyway I tried using a PCI video card to fix the sound issue, but no help. Then I tried using the PCI sound card from my other computer and onboard video. This has almost completely fixed the problem. Winamp plays perfectly as long as other programs aren't hogging CPU power. VLC has the occasional blip and messes up the start a bit, and still goes crazy when minimized, which doesn't happen on other computers. Still needs work, but it's quite an improvement.

There are huge problems with any sort of video (~10 FPM and red/blue are swapped) but a new video card should help that.
