It wouldn't. You'd just make them last a long time, or however long the user chooses on the login page. Despite their name, session IDs can span multiple sessions.

If you'll excuse me, I'll see if anyone's installed an orifice in Redmond so one could literally fuck Microsoft in the earhole. Dunno where Universal's headquarters are, but I'd imagine the same thing would be going on.

Hah, I like one of those comments. Since we're paying for music they assume we're going to download illegally, does that mean we should have permission to download illegal music?

Posted on 11-12-06 08:54 PM, in What use for a computer with a broken disk controller? Link
I just picked up a nice old computer, it'd be great except the onboard IDE controller seems to be b0rked. CD-ROM drives quit reading about the middle of the disc and hard disks just fail at random, when they work in other computers. So can anyone think of a use for it? Figure it could boot Linux over a network or something.

It's got 256MB of RAM and a Pentium 2 at about 400mhz. Has USB, sound and network cards and a DVD-ROM. Even came with a TV tuner card.

About time this was done. I noticed loguserid has been dropped from the cookie entirely. Is the user ID now just appended to the password hash (or vice-versa) or is it true session IDs?

You missed a few.

Step 4.1: Install patch #KB38y75843256Q-7G.
Step 4.2: Watch how much better the system performs. No more "error 0102" on bootup! Now only "error 0116" immediately after bootup.

Hm, you're right. Come to think of it there's really no way to prevent having to log in every session without people being able to do just that, except locking the session ID to an IP address which is no good for dynamic IPs. :-/ I figured that's what things like VBulliten and PHPBB did, but looks like they just store a user ID and password hash.

Posted on 11-14-06 01:50 AM, in Pokémon G/S question about wild Pokémon Link
I haven't looked into this in depth, and it's been a while since I messed with stats, but IIRC, the "rarity" stat is used for experience (this times level = experience you get for it). I don't recall if there's a separate stat for how difficult it is to catch or if rarity does that too, but I think it's the former. As for wild Pokémon sets, as others mentioned, the list goes from most to least common, and sometimes the common ones are duplicated to tilt the scale even more in their favour.

This has been discussed a few times. Some of the cooler suggestions I recall include:

  • Using the overworld as a map. You'd go into a special room (mainly so the effects of reloading the level aren't so noticeable) and do something to "show the map", which would actually exit back to the overworld. You could choose how the map works: A, make it truly just a map; there's no way to move between levels, but you can use Start to browse. B, make it a teleporter, where you can choose a destination and jump to it; essentially just like SMW, except you could get from any point in the game to any other without ever using the map since it's all connected as one big level. You could have save points here too, possibly by hacking the save prompt routine to show a prompt after every level, so you'd be prompted to save every time you view the map. Only big issue is the music would change, killing the "just viewing a map" feel, but that's probably easy to avoid. Of course you'd need to disable 2-player mode, but could use custom blocks to switch Mario and Luigi for a 2-player coop game. (For 1-player mode, just tell the player to unplug controller 2. The game uses controller 1 for both if #2 is not present.)
  • Building on this, submaps could be smaller planets or something.
  • Obviously there'd be no time limit, but the timer could be invoked at any time if you wanted a time limit for certain parts, EG if you need to escape from an exploding space station. You enable the timer by just setting the current time limit to nonzero, but I'm not sure how you turn it back off without killing the player.
  • FPS-like powerup selection. You can have many powerups but only use one or two at a time depending which they are. (EG you could use the cape and fireballs at the same time, but not fireballs and lasers.)

One possible issue is memory. The game has only 4 memory slots for level status. (This holds info like which coins you grabbed and such.) Rooms sharing memory slots can be trouble.

Yes, if the picture fits the game's/hardware's colour and size limitations. Don't use up all your Map16 space on pretty backgrounds though.

What the...? I logged in successfully after the update, but when I came back today I was logged out and trying to log in didn't do anything. I poked around a bit looking for a reason and decided to just delete cookies and try again. After deleting the cookies I open login.php and I'm already logged in. Somehow I'm now logged in with no cookies at all.

  1. Not a particularly interesting screenshot.
  2. Oh, poop.
  3. The background colour is freaky in a good way.
  4. Bah, I hate those one-platform jumps. I that BG though, and the birds are a nice touch.
  5. Looks difficult.
  6. Neat.
  7. This is no place for a nap. Cool, but fireballs in a wet place like this?
  8. Funfunfun.
  9. Each penguin you add to this game makes you win that much more.
  10. It's Alberta! Looks hard.
  11. Neat. Background cutting off right below Yoshi looks a bit odd; a gradient might do well here.
  12. Nice. Flaming Shyguys flying around at random is a pretty funny idea.
  13. Interesting design here. Yay for Tall Guy.
  14. NOT THE MONKEYS... those bastards.
  15. Yow. Getting into the harder stuff now.
  16. Looks good. Is it raining outside?
  17. Interesting light effect. Bet it's a PITA to beat too.
  18. I'm reminded of one of the good parts of Yoshi's Story.
  19. Nice name. Background looks trippy. Hope there's plenty of eggs available.
  20. Neat, but kinda odd that there's stumps floating there.
  21. Nice background. Looks like another pain.
  22. Fun! And pretty colours!
  23. Poochy...
  24. Ouch.
  25. Agreed.
  26. Cool.
  27. Also cool.
  28. I still love those shyguys. Like little FBI agents. If I ever make a YI hack I'm stealing that idea.
