Any attempts at creating cheating, hacking, or otherwise GPL software for the system would then be in direct violation of software patents. This would also cripple any efforts at the emulation of future consoles, because reverse-assembly will be impossible without the original source files.

Yeah, kinda like how the Gamecube's discs are encrypted and the encryption key is stored in a physically cut-away barcode that few drives can read and only expensive pressing machines can write, or how the DS won't boot anything over wifi that doesn't carry Nintendo's 2048-bit RSA signature, or how DS carts use a few forms of encryption and compression. Funny how GCN piracy is still possible, DS wireless hacks exist (and a firmware replacement can remove that signature check entirely), and DS games can be dumped, decrypted, pirated and hacked despite all this.

Bla bla encryption, yak yak signatures, yap yap compression. Wii will be hacked just like all the rest.

Pac, thanks, that should be quite helpful. Kinda sucks that so few of the colours are useable. I might have to hack up a per-submap custom OW palette system if it hasn't already been done.

I could send you my hack but could I ask why? I already deleted the tiles I was testing with in that pic I'm afraid. It was ages ago but I figure that tile might have been from the wrong section or on the wrong layer or something dumb like that.

Just some questions though:

So on layer 1 they'd use the background colour?

If you are using a layer 1 tile made up of 8x8 tiles from the green region, they can only use the last 8, which are x8 to xF.

The tiles used for the SMW animations can only use the first 8 colours, x0 to x7.

What happens if I use the others here?

To answer your last question, those games were designed on a platform in which memory and processing power increases steadily over time, whereas N64 games were designed on a platform in which these are fixed, save for the Expansion Pak.

That just takes you back to the menu or freezes.

The "secret area" in Kokiri Forest is interesting. Notice the night music during the day. The place you respawn if you fall out of bounds is also pretty interesting, and I don't recall seeing that "Forest Training Area" sign at all. If you head to the Deku Tree, after a heart piece appears above your head (which seems to indicate an area has loaded), you can turn back to see the rest of the forest, completely empty. Oddly there isn't a sign to be found.

[edit] Got bored, poked around in RAM, found the level list. The actual 64DD tests are "n64dd_SetDiskVersion(1)" and "n64dd_SetDiskVersion(0)". So these might not be levels at all, but rather options that would change something 64DD-related.

I wonder if it's even possible to do this in V1.2? I noticed it forces the "Disk Icon Flag" (the byte that makes a "Disk" icon appear next to a save file) to zero.

I think up to 12 or even 16MB might be addressable. I think I once saw a third-party Expansion Pak that claimed to add (or bring it up to) 12MB. Of course this'd be almost completely useless since no game would use more than 8MB, though it could be useful for homebrew/hacking.
