$250 is cheap, so that isn't a letdown. Controllers are cheap, especially considering each one is its own GPS system more or less. Buying a browser really doesnt matter. Surfing on a computer is much better anyway. Region coding is still up in there since there are so many different answers. I don't see the big deal with it anyway.

I don't see how anything is a letdown so far.

$250 is expensive for a Nintendo console. $40 is expensive for a controller regardless of what crazy devices it contains. Other consoles already bundle a browser right in the firmware, and doing that would allow cool additional features that wouldn't be as feasible when having to buy the browser. There's plenty of uses for surfing on a game console, especially if there's no computer in the room (eg if it's in the living room). Region coding is completely pointless (when it's legal to bypass a form of "protection", there's a problem with the protection) and makes it a pain for people who want to import games.

Given Nintendo's history of leaving beta stuff in games/Japanese-only stuff in English versions (the Japanese dialogue is still available in English OoT), laziness and/or bad coding practices seems likely. Like I said, though, editing a bitmap and an array of points would be easier than recompiling the entire source, and less likely to break something which is very important in this scenario.

Or they could have left it in for people who buy English games but take them to Japan.

$250 is expensive for a Nintendo Console? Why is that relevant when you consider how much cheaper it (still) is compared to the other two consoles? And.. honestly, it is only $50 more expensive than any of their previous consoles.. and it allows playability of all those previous consoles too.. Hmm, yes, seems reasonable to increase the price a tad. Besides, it is packed with a controller and a game as well.

If Wii Sports is indeed a full game and not just a crappy tech demo like Luigi's Mansion, then I can see it being worth the extra money, but I doubt this is the case. The price of others is irrelevant; a bit like saying kicking puppies is OK because there are much worse things you could do. Backward compatibility might be worth the extra $50 if I could use my existing cartridges somehow, but when you have to buy the game again, it can hardly be considered compatibility at all.

Besides, it has been said for months now that the price would probably be between $200-250.. A lot of people just took that as "Oh, yay! $200!" without considering for a second that.. indeed, more realistically it would be $250. This should not be surprising at all, it isn't a let down either, and again.. it is still much cheaper than the alternatives.

Fair enough, but do realize that assuming this means $200 is not unreasonable when that's been the price of so many before.

Next, $40 may be expensive for a controller.. but it is not a normal controller. Do you expect them to suffer a loss on the controller, just to keep the prices lower? Nintendo has been making a profit on everything they've sold in recent (and otherwise for the most part) years.. Microsoft and Sony have been shooting themselves in the foot, anticipating a profit to make up for it in the long run instead.. And STILL their prices add up higher than Nintendo's on average, that's really something to consider..

I doubt a few buttons, a wireless transmitter and a motion sensor add up to $40, especially when buying in bulk. Advanced or not, $40 is still a hefty price just to be able to play the games.

Honestly, this isn't very expensive for what it does. More expensive than you are used to maybe.. but still less expensive than the alternatives. It IS the machine itself you want, right? I can't see why dollar signs alone are a "let down" when it is the console and what it can do that matters.

The prices are only part of the issue. There's also region coding, having to buy games that I already own again, and having to buy a browser that could easily have been included free with the system.

As for the Opera Browser.. Opera isn't free anyway, is it? I imagine it was up to Opera to sell it, not Nintendo.. But sure, they could have found someone else to do their browser software for them, which could have been free.. Eh though, coulda shoulda woulda.. Doesn't matter how often people might surf on the television either, if someone actually wants to that badly.. they can just pay up. Me personally, I'd never have used the damn thing anyway. My computer is right next to the TV..

Opera became free a few months ago. Not everyone has their TV next to their computer; again, mine would probably be in the living room most of the time, and there's no computer there.

As for the Region Locking.. I don't like it either in general, however they do it for a reason ya know? They want to control the market the console is released in.. That way, if a game is released in the EU and the US, and the US one is cheaper to import.. they use the lock to sway you into buying the EU version anyway.. If there were no lock, and everyone imported - there would be some problems eventually.. Like it or not, it has a purpose. And besides.. all prior Nintendo consoles had region locking, and all of them were EASY to bypass! I don't expect this one to be much different!

Being easy to bypass doesn't change the fact that it's there, and being present on older consoles doesn't mean it's not a bad thing. If it's cheaper to have a game shipped to you from another country than to buy one at the local store, there's a problem. Which seems a better solution? "Price the games the same or similar in all markets so that importing is more expensive" or "Stick up their pooper and force them to pay the arbitrarily higher price"? And of course, those who want a game that was never released in their country, or who speak Japanese and prefer the original Japanese version of a game to a poor English translation (pretty common, really) are boned.
With game consoles it's even worse since they offer no option to change the region if you move to another country.

Grey makes an interesting point. The best controllers I've ever used - Saitek P880 for PC, Mad Catz for SNES, Hip Gear for N64 - all had circular D-pads. I never had a problem with any of them.
