I read, but I wasn't sure exactly what 'exploicit' was supposed to mean. Also, is it really that hard to tell that a stupid suggestion followed by a wink isn't serious? (Besides, I was talking about the fact that acmlm.net wasn't changing, not that other things were. )

The Sympatico software from Bell sucks too, but I didn't install it. You need only browse to the modem's IP address and put in the account name and password.

Also, I laugh at parents who do that. Most of the time, they wrap them, and everyone knows Santa doesn't. I mean, he doesn't on TV.

A lot of things DD does are reprogramming large parts of the game. It's very difficult for someone with no experience doing it. It's not just hex editing, you have to actually decode, modify, and re-encode parts of the programming or write new program code and add it to the game. If you want to learn how, look for 6502 ASM tutorials, but be prepared to learn.

I think it'd be Map8 in this case.

Er, no, that's not what I meant. Unless I read the docs way wrong, the levels are stored in the game in a compiled script format, where one command says to place an object, another loads a texture, etc. Since the scripts can contain jumps, calls, etc it can be difficult to edit them as they are in the ROM. I figure Nintendo's editor probably stored the actual level data in files as a raw binary format (just dumping the object structs to a file), and then translated that into this script format when adding it to the ROM. I would think it'd be easier for an editor to translate the script into such a raw binary format (or even XML) and save it to a file, edit that file, and then import it back into the ROM whenever. That is, instead of editing the level in-ROM you edit a temporary file with your own format (doesn't have to be Nintendo's, just the same concept).

The idea is that if you try to edit the data in the ROM, you have to either keep track of the address of everything (like if you want to change the music, the program needs to remember where the 'set music' command is) or re-execute the script every time you need to find a given command. Either one would be rather difficult and require a lot of seeking back and forth through the ROM. Using your own format simplifies it: you only need to execute the script once, dumping the resulting data to a file with a standardized format (like most games store their levels in), edit that file, and then translate it back into a script. This makes adding or removing objects easy; just add/remove data from the file or mark it as deleted. Editing it in-ROM would mean having to NOP out deleted objects (leaving useless gaps) and make adding them quite a hassle. Plus if you ever want to implement file importing/exporting, you'd need to do this anyway.

For that matter, you might even use XML... I've been buggering around with game engines using it, and it works rather well.

Oh yes, and don't forget that these scripts are (probably) optimized... so one group of commands might handle several objects, or some such thing, which would make it that much harder. Editing and re-compiling/re-optimizing the output avoids this problem.
