FYI, in VLC you need to choose a format and enter a path in the options dialog, then the images would be saved to that path.

I had a site hosted on 110mb.com for a while, for PHP testing purposes. I don't recall if it had no ads, or just easily-blockable ones though. Only problem was my account got wiped out for no apparent reason.

You want sprite ideas hm?

-Wind could be made by generating a moving sprite that pushes Mario back like the movement blocks in Blocktool.
-A Goomba on a pogo stick.
-A real Shell Brother.

Spawning real shells would be cool.
-A 1up that runs from you ala Mario 64.
-A dog that lays explosive turds.
-A zombie.
-A door that periodically gets up and wanders around. It could wander to other screens, changing where it'd lead. (Did I mention this already? )

Uh, you have to hack the firmware, download an emulator, and run it. The only thing an unmodified PSP has to do with emulating old systems is it's powerful enough to be capable of it.

I dunno, not really.

Mandarin Chinese is a Sino-Tibetan language, Japanese is a language isolate with no known relatives. They share a lot of vocab and an alphabet, but the underlying structures and stuff are totally different from each other. It'd be like thinking knowing English helps you learn Latin or vice versa.

Well if you know English, you should find it easier to learn Latin than if you don't know any language using the same alphabet.

Remember the #1 rule of security: NEVER trust user input. A browser can easily be hacked to ignore maxlength attributes (hell, I have them stripped out with Proxomitron). Use them, but do server-side length checking as well. Same goes for everything that comes back from the user, even if you don't immediately realize it can be edited - don't assume that just because your radio buttons have numeric values that you will necessarily get a numeric value for that field, for example. Even things like the browser's user agent string can be dangerous.

Many games copy the health or variations of it to all different places not for confusion purposes, but just out of bad design.

Afaik a PAR code can change values at any address. Some games can detect that; in that case you'd have to change the detecting code as well. Very difficult without disassembling the ASM code...

You would have to have detecting codes all over the place. Wouldn't that make the game's functions process a lot slower?

Most games that do any sort of checking like this just do a simple ROM checksum at startup, or in some cases, during some event (I think I heard of one game that'd freeze after the first random battle if the checksum was wrong). To use a Game Genie (or PAR with ROM-editing codes) with them on a real SNES you need a code to kill that routine. On an emulator you can just not activate the codes until it's passed.

If you really wanted to keep people out you could scatter code about to check smaller parts of ROM, such as the checksum routine, or have the game just slowly add up bytes in ROM in the background (add a few more each hblank or something) and stop if, when it finally finishes adding, the value isn't what it should be. I don't know of any games that do this though.

Posted on 08-01-06 01:36 AM, in Mario Kart 64 Level Hacking. Seriously! Link
Thanks, but it works nothing like that in Mario Kart 64. The level header points to a list of textures to load which includes their address, filesize, and some other number whose purpose I don't know yet. All the textures are the same format (RGBA 5551) and all 32 pixels high. The trick is, the programmers assumed they would all be 32 pixels wide too, when in fact many are 64 pixels wide. So the game takes the polygon's texture # and jumps to (# * 2048) in the decompressed texture data (2048 being the size of a 32x32 texture) and reads the image from there. That means after any 64-pixel texture, the next texture is a mishmash of two different images. Emulating this bug proved to be quite difficult since my rendering core (and indeed, OpenGL itself) is programmed much differently than the game's.

I did finally manage to get that working, though, after much bashing my head on the keyboard. *slaps whoever coded this game* Now there's just a few small things left to do:

-Figure out why the track has no texture
-Figure out how the game stretches and smears certain textures, such as those on billboards
-Fix bugs

Here's a screenshot of the progress so far. Notice the camera is rotated.
