There were some NES accessories that used it, but obviously they weren't very popular. On later models the port is actually covered up.
Also I think some Japanese Super Famicom add-ons used it.

My SNES had the same problem. It was funny; my brother somehow spilled cat litter inside it, and at the same time, the RF box died. So we sent it in for repair, they cleaned it out and it worked again, and they sent it back. We get it back and it still doesn't work. We had to send it back a second time before someone over there finally tried using our broken RF box and finding that it was b0rked. (They replaced it and sent it back for free though. )
BTW that SNES is sitting right next to my Gamecube and still works great. I played Super Mario Bros 3 on it a few hours ago.

He gave up with his experiments and just had sex with the cat instead. Also some people at this board need to be reassured about that kind of stuff, they worry about him. You know, the part where he had sex with a cat. If he wasn't, he'd probably be doing something worse.

I never had a little sister. Just a cat. The cat is a virgin to this day. On an interesting side note, I once dreamed I was a cat myself, and intended to have sex with another cat, but didn't. Useless information nobody needs FTW.

Yeah, Silver is the only game I've owned whose battery is died, probably because of the clock. Also, they may be rechargable but I don't think the games actually recharge them.

I always figured what I'd do if I needed a disk's contents to absolutely not be recovered is something along these lines:

1) Overwrite it with crap several times.
2) Smash it into small pieces inside a plastic bag.
3) Burn the bag.
4) If there's any solid chunks left, mash them into powder.
5) Scatter the powder/ashes in the woods, river etc.
6) Realize there was one or two files on it I still wanted and forgot to back up.

This sort of thread is precisely the reason such measures had to be taken. Did you see the forum before it was trashed? Seemed like 95% of them were too stupid to read a help file, sticky thread, or FAQ and another 4% just didn't care about anyone but themselves.
