The problem with defending Legoman is that despite countless efforts to show him what he's doing wrong, he continues to make stupid mistakes far below even the level of "n00b who has no idea what he's doing". Even someone who's never played SMW before should know enough not to put keyholes in the wall for no reason and to fix glaring, stupid bugs. It's the sort of mistake you think cannot possibly be unintentional, absolutely has to be a joke... but he just keeps doing it. And on top of that, he just took someone else's unfinished demo, added glitches, and called it his own. WTF?

To say that it is is to say that ameteurs count more than professionals. This is about what I meant. Two key points: 1) You don't really need to give credit to Nintendo for the original graphics, because A: Everyone will recognize them immediately anyway and B: They don't care. 2) If you were to give credit for rips (which, despite the previous point, is still a good thing to do), the credit should go to the artist who spent hours drawing them for the original game, not the ripper who spent 5 minutes copying them. Maybe if for some reason they're really hard to rip, you might credit both. When I use rips, I always make a point of naming the game they're taken from. Simple and effective. |

I updated my layout. For those too lazy to check my bio:
The only bug I know of is the titlebars for the quote/code boxes. They have no close button, and if you have a HUGE screen resolution they might glitch up... it just uses this as a background with no vertical repeat. If anyone knows a better way (at least a way to add a close button in the corner), I'd like to hear it. I tried defining 2 background images, but neither would show up.
Oh yeah, and post your comments and any problems you see. |

| Yeah, but you can't do that. You can only change one object into another and move it; you can't add or remove anything yet. That is, you can turn a box into a Goomba, but you can't just add a Goomba. | ||||||||||||||||

Not anymore it doesn't.
Speaking of CSS, this doesn't have to do with the layout but I noticed something odd today. If you define a class like this: .blah {
The output is different in IE and lololol. IE reads "width: 100px" as "make the entire box, including padding and borders, 100 pixels wide", while lololol reads it as "make the content area 100 pixels wide, then add padding and borders", so the box is 108 pixels in lololol (100 pixels of content plus padding and border). Which behaviour is correct? |

| I imagine the game would freeze when you load the level. It'd be interesting to experiment with start points though. Maybe have two of them, appearing on different stars, so you start in a different place depending which star you choose. | ||||||||||||||||

| Top to bottom:
-Scorebar is miscoloured. -That one building is unrealistically tall. -Blue/brown brick pattern is kinda neat. Blue turn blocks surrounding the pipe are ugly though. -Background is alright, but could use more detail. -Glitched blocks (Map16 tiles with default graphics) at the edges of the screen. -Mario is miscoloured. It's OK, keep working on it and fix the palette problems. (Of course all I can really judge is this one screenshot. ) |

Somehow I've come into posession of a Motorola DCT-2000 digital cable box. I got it a few months ago and tried plugging it in, even though I don't have any cable service (I have satellite). It worked, sort of... I could display the channel guide when the power was off (not on ), but it just said "no data" or some crap and would crash if I entered certain menus. It was the same program my box used back when I did have digital cable. One odd thing I noticed was I could enter really long channel numbers; there didn't seem to be any limit to their length, but if I went on for a few minutes it started printing garbage. Also it was stuck on channel 65535.
Anyway I recently came across a tool I could use to remove the security screws (a file ) and open the box. I thought it might be fun to re-program it to do something weird like play Pong or what have you. I think I found the flash ROM chip the firmware is stored on (haven't looked up the chip ID), so if I could rig up some sort of connection to that, I could flash whatever I want onto it, but I figure there must be a better way.
I noticed a button on the mainboard and decided to hook it up again to see what that would do. (Turns out it's just a reset button. ) This time it doesn't show the channel guide, just a blank screen, but I can enter a diagnostics screen using a well-documented button sequence (Google it). Kinda fun to poke around in, but useless really. The display shows "E 11" when off, and "0" when on... I can enter numbers on the remote, and they show up on the display, but nothing happens. "E 11" apparently means "invalid unit code", which makes sense since the diagnostics screen says the unit code is 000-00000 etc etc.
Anyway this thing has a serial port, what seems to be a sort of parallel port, a place where you could connect an IR transmitter, another port you could plug some sort of modem into, all manner of digital and analog video/audio in/out ports, and of course a remote control. I'm sure I could find some use for most of these. I should point out that I don't want to hack it to get free TV, unlock channels, etc... like I said I don't even have cable, I have satellite and I rarely watch it anyway. I want to just dump all the TV-related firmware and put something else on it (not sure what yet). So... does anyone know of any way to communicate with this thing to upload new firmware? Like I said it has a serial port, plus there's various connectors and/or jumpers on the mainboard whose purpose I don't know. Right now it's just looking for a cable signal, but I doubt I could build an entire cable modem to interface with it that way.
[edit] What I thought was the flash ROM was actually an audio decoder. The ROM is an M28W160CB, but the pins are waaaaay too small for me to just wire something up to it. ![]() (edited by HyperMackerel on 07-12-06 11:27 PM) |

Maybe you should make it possible to reach some previously unreachable areas in which Luigi is said to reside, and put stars or something there.
As for jumping across ! boxes, be warned that they break easily. You'd have to have really precise jumps to land on them without breaking them. BTW, did anyone ever notice this? In Hazy Maze Cave (level 6) head left from the entrance and look down the bottomless pit. If you look close you can see a yellow dot, and I think a green one too. If you consider the level's layout, then directly below this area should be the small pond, in which there are yellow and green ! boxes. I figure the "bottomless" pit here is actually just a hole leading down to that area, but with some object placed in it that kills Mario. The distance prevents the polygons from being visible, but you can still see the ! boxes. |

So they pay $100,000 for government-issued cures that don't work. Now they want to try another method, but it's suddenly become illegal. Really the question is whether they know his method will work and don't want people to know it, or just that they want to keep sucking more and more money out of the (very) poor bastard. Absolutely disgusting? Yes. Surprising? Not at all. Who cares about an innocent family's loss of their son and all their money when you can make a quick buck? |
