Hm, this is a bit off-topic, but it's an interesting idea I thought I should note. If one were to write their own SPC engine they could use it to debug the main game. The game engine sends various information to the SPC700 (just a simple 1 or 2 byte code that tells what it's doing, eg, handling vblank, starting DMA, processing sprite code, etc). One of these (I imagine vblank) would have to be sent at a specific interval. If the SPC700 were to detect that this signal is suddenly not coming anymore (or a lot if the program were to get stuck in a loop sending it), it could stop the music and beep. The status code itself determines length and frequency, and from the sound, you could tell what happened.
Maybe not feasible, but interesting anyway. |

I used to use some HTML crap that switched between various animé and general cool images. However, I've since replaced the HTML stuff with a program specifically designed to do it.

I dip it in Ranch sauce. Unless it's stuffed crust. That is the food of the Gods, no modification necessary.
Also, the bread I eat does tend to have an actual crust at the top, which I remove. But at the bottom it's just the typical brown edge. |

ROM hacks are sort of a gray area. On one hand, you're using your own content as opposed to the copyrighted content. However, on the other hand, copyrighted content - the game program, and anything you didn't hack - still remains. This is the main legal benefit of patches - an IPS made from the original ROM vs your hacked version will only contain your modifications, so unless you imported other copyrighted data, none will be in the patch.

Originally posted by piratepunk I think he knows. First, you would need to add all those graphics, which would be hard because SMB doesn't actually have any free space for graphics. Then you'd have to hack the title screen tilemap to include them. |

An idea: Add a controller mask mode. Instead of using address A purely as an on/off switch, use it as a mode switch. 0 means don't change the controller data, 1 means overwrite it with address B, and 2 means AND it with address B. This way, only the buttons whose bits are set in address B will respond.
Maybe you could add other fun modes, like reversing directions and such. It's up to you. |

Pardon the bump but I did some more digging. First here's a disassembly of the problem function:
004026EE push ebp
When run in the debugger, it does display an exception: Unhandled exception in sdl3dtest.exe (NTDLL.DLL): 0xC0000005: Access Violation. Finally, a stack dump: ntdll.dll!wcsncpy+0x354
I tested a bit, and the class is able to reset just fine in a small test program, so I imagine there's some sort of memory/stack corruption going on. The file pointer hasn't been changed. Don't hesitate to ask if you need more info. [edit] I did some testing, and found interesting results... if you just pass some arbitrary pointer to fclose(), it crashes just like this does (access violation and all), but it only gets to msvcrt.dll!fclose+0x37 instead of ntdll.dll!wcsncpy+0x354, and actually shows the 'fatal error, close or debug' message. More interesting is that if you open a file, then try to close it twice, nothing bad happens. I don't think this really means anything, though, because I'm positive the pointer is correct... I even looked at the memory in the debugger and made sure of it. I wonder if some small problem in my code could have triggered some large problem in Windows'? [edit 2] Hah! Figured out why it wasn't showing any error... I forgot SDL has a built-in exception handler, which apparently decided to just kill the program. With that off, I do get an error: The instruction at "0x7c910de3" referenced memory at "0x7473654c". The memory could not be "read". Sometimes when I click a link on the board, lololol asks me to download the file instead of opening it. Does this happen to anyone else? Anyone seen it off the board or not with lololol? |
