Posted on 12-16-05 10:38 AM, in You know: What's the point in online ads anymore? Link
You know... when you think about it, commercials on TV are a lot like the worst ads I've seen online. They pop up in the middle of a show, have really loud annoying sound, try to sell you something you don't want or can't even buy (the online ad I refer to was for the US Army - I'm Canadian and was ~15), and you can't get rid of them, only let them go until they stop themselves. But for some reason online ads are a lot more annoying.

I guess it's because with commercials you know what you're getting. They start at a specific time (not like halfway through dialog) during each show, play a minute or two, then stop. They can't fuck up your TV, steal personal info, etc, and are FCC-regulated. In fact, unexpected TV ads (like when the news channel plugs their website/show in the scrolling headlines) still do bother me. So I suppose the unexpected interruption is the biggest factor.

(Of course, another factor is that with TV, commercials are your only chance to leave without missing content. )

Oh, yes, and the Google ads... I'm at school so I saw them. In a thread about IQ:
-Post and rope sales
-Modified go-carts
-Fast-download usenet
The usenet I can somewhat understand, because it's a board and there were sentences like 'mine is xxx' (like if people compared download speeds) but I have no idea what the bloody hell ropes and go-carts have to do with it.

The login/reply pages are at least somewhat accurate, hawking authentication systems and the like... though to me it seems kinda intrusive to have ads on a page where you provide your password in the first place.

[edit] Ohhhhh.... In my profile, I got 2 AMD ads (makes sense, I listed my computer specs there) and one for a DRM system. How's that for ad placement? I'm a firm believer that DRM needs to die painfully and its inventor hung by the testicles (can't think of an equally fitting variation for a woman, but yeah). My bio doesn't even mention it, though. (Unless it was the software patents thing in my sig? )

[edit 2] Oh that's just too funny. One of the ads now is advertising an advertising agency.

Posted on 12-16-05 11:07 AM, in This post is odd. How? Link
I must admit, I was a bit slow to think of a valid solution. I was almost right, though - I thought it was a common word with 3 glyphs which would, in fact, go against Squash's post's oddity.

It's particularly difficult to avoid violating this law, but I found a trick. You can apply a 'find' function to your writings for validation. Still, it's hard to pull off this trick for so long.

So... who saw that film 'Narnia'? I saw an old cartoon variation long ago, and it was amazing how similar said variation was to that which is playing now. Although said old film was as if it was shown by an 8-bit, ~240-month-old unit many of us had (and many of us still do).

Share my pain.

I know what you mean. These ones have right-click and the File menu in explorer disabled. Like WTF good does that do? I'm going to hack into something by right-clicking? The only thing it accomplishes is making it a pain to view file properties (right-clicking a file actually does work, but sometimes it lags so long the menu just disappears). And yet, you can run cmd.exe.

Also, they used to use shitty passwords ('freezer' for Deep Freeze and 'welcome' for admin) but they've learned since then.

Would I use it? Fuck yes - if it was tested enough. I'd want to be sure I'd arrive in one piece and not like part fly or something.

Seriously, how awesome would it be to be able to walk down the street, take a left, head into some Japanese company headquarters, do your job, walk back out of the building, turn right, pick up some authentic Italian food, take a left and be back home?

Only thing is, it'll never happen. It would bankrupt any and all transportation businesses (except maybe those who make racecars) and thus the oil industry. Nothing that harms the oil industry will ever be allowed to develop to a usable state, at least not in the US. (Japan is close with a pretty nice electric car, but right now it costs $350,000. ) Yay capitalism!

Also, like others have said, I've only ever heard of teleportation of single photons. Of course, you know the government is waaaaay ahead in technology, so you never know...

That 'too long' thing may be a bug, but it's more likely dictionary compression. Commonly-used words (or groups of words/letters like 'ou') can be represented by one byte, so your text ends up being bigger when compressed.

Kickass. Not only that you thought of and successfully pulled off a stunt like that, but that you found out what bank the sprite ASM pointers are in! Now if only I weren't buried under 800000 homework assignments.

BTW, that fish+plant combo might work if you just disabled the bit that makes the plants stop jumping when you get close.

If we use Fu's hacks, though, we restrict functionality and run into possible copyright issues.

Also, when values 8-F are the same as 0-7, it means the value is really only 3 bits.
