Unless they completely redid tons of the game within the last few months or the multiplayer totally outshines the single player game mode, I highly doubt PDZ is going to be that 'sweet'. While not a bad game, it's far from amazing and it definitely isn't any sort of killer app. It's fun, yeah, and some of the things in it, like the melee attacks and the ducking behind walls thing, are pretty neat, but overall, it's just not that great. And seriously, the locktopus? I seriously hate the damn locktopus, and the various other little puzzle devices they have in the game, ESPECIALLY the fucking bomb. I mean, what the fuck kind of practical bomb has a fuse on it that you can't start without solving a puzzle? Ugh.

I'll consider getting an Xbox 360, but I'm really not all that excited about it. The only console I really want is the Revolution; the controller is just so intriguing. *shrugs* XB360's controller is nice and comfy, though, which is good. I've not tried the wireless controllers, so I don't know how those fair, but the wired ones are good. Oh, and as for the graphics, PDZ has pretty good graphics on an HDTV, but I don't think it's enough to warrant a jump to another console generation. It's nice to see littles details here and there that just kind of make you think 'Wow, I'm impressed that they pulled that off on here,' but I don't think it's worth another system. Meh.

Okay, come on. Disch made this whole deal a little while back about people overpraising hacks and it's happening AGAIN. No offense intended toward Andrew, but these hacks look incredibly unprofessional. The new graphics are unappealing and some of the new palettes (the third screenshot (of SMB3) in his second most recent post, specifically) are atrocious. On the SMW world map, there are clouds being overlapped improperly by hills all over the place and even a hill in the middle of a road for some reason. The new SMB3 title screen looks pretty bad; the lettering on the new graphics needs a ton of work. The new blocks in SMB1 are incredibly out of place, and there are some oddities such as in the first screenshot in the thread where the thing mario is standing on suddenly ends and there's a whole bunch of ground; that doesn't look good.

My problem here doesn't lie with the hacks. My problem lies with all of you who are praising the hacks. While this is a step up from praising crap like transparent Mario (oooooooooohhh, how original!!), these hacks are still not deserving of the comments that people have been giving them.

mynameisbob - "One nice thing about the screenies: the GFX gets a more harder look."
Say what? The few graphic changes don't fit with the games at all; they look out of place and are a step down from the old graphics. Yes, that really is a 'nice' thing.

sonotnormal - "Wow. All your hacks look really great."
The one screenshot you had a problem with, the bullet bill one from SMW, is one of the better looking ones, in my opinion. While most of his SMB2 shots look pretty fine, quite a few are pretty bad. Look at his SMB3 overworld. The overuse of bridges combined with the checkerboarding of the rocks and cacti and the new level markers (which don't look good, probably because of their palette) makes for one bad looking map. And as for the SMW overworld, how is your only suggesstion to fix the issue on the top left? I can't for the life of me figure out how this all looks really great.

insectduel - "Very nice."
Good stock-reply there. No reasoning, no suggesstions, no nothing, just a compliment that probably stems from wanting to jump on the complimenting bandwagon. Sounds familiar, eh? Compliment only what needs complimenting, be specific with what you're complimenting, and make some damn posts with SUBSTANCE for a change. Ugh.

FreeDOS - "What's really interesting is that your series of hacks flow through each other in SMB, SMB2, SMB3, and SMW... "
Oh my god, it does flow! That's so interesting! Seriously, give me a break. What kind of comment is that? I'm sure you can do better. The fact that the entirety of your post was about this 'interesting' thing makes this even worse.

HyperHacker: You sure those few new graphics in the screenshots he posted at the beginning of the thread look nice?

Thanks to those who didn't just leave a compliment: to the rest of you, come on. As most of us who didn't already know SHOULD have learned last time, this cheapens the compliments that other people get when they put many many months (years, in some cases) into amazing hacks, and although it wasn't as bad this time, it is still troubling to see this happening. Knock it off.

I don't mean to disuade you from hacking, Andrew, and I apologize for being so harsh. Keep on hacking and improving.

Maybe they let you down with Virtual boy, but many of us who actually bothered to give it a good chance happen to really like the system and some of the games for it. It could have been better (read: Sega VR), but it's far from bad.

How does that apply to hacks and utilities? Hacks and utilities are entirely original and thus the copyright of the original game developers does not apply at all, right? I don't see how you could get away without giving that information on those pages (note that I'm not saying you are). As for as the data goes, though, I do think that crediting people for information is still important, regardless of how it's done. An incredible amount of work is put into this stuff much of the time; I wouldn't be all that happy if I found tons of data for a game and received no credit for it, though it wouldn't be that big of a deal, really. Regardless, though, if I did something like finding most of the data in a game specifically for other people to use, I'd appreciate getting credit for it; it's a matter of courtesy, in my opinion. But again, it's not terribly vital or anything. Meh.

Fuck off. You're such a fucking asshole, you know that? Everytime datacrystal comes up, you have to throw WikiRAM into the conversation. Stop being so fucking hostile. Were you not such an asshole, it might be nice for you to work together with datacrystal to make a better site that'd help more people, but you just keep digging yourself deeper and deeper into your own little shithole, so much that I (and I'm sure I'm not alone here) wish you would just stay in that damn hole and die. Mini Ridley in Metroid, Arwing in Zelda OoT, leftovers of an unused level in Mega Man, leftovers of Mega Man 1 levels in Mega Man 2, an unused balloon item in Milon's Secret Castle that warps you to the outdoors, an unused music track in Ufouria... I'm sure there's a multitude of other ones I know of but am not remembering right now. *shrugs*

Whereas I actually did post about it, except the post was lost because it was after the last backup.

Another thing I was asking about in my dead post: why are the screenshots all stretched?

I've been around for years and know a ton about this stuff, but I don't have all that much free time at the moment. I was also considering getting a site of this sort going a few months ago, and I even have a mostly complete version of the site from a while ago that I was going to build off of, but it seems you beat me to the punch. I'll consider becoming a staffer, but the time issue may pose a problem. I'll think about it.

Bah. These games aren't hard enough to difficulty rankings in relation to one another; they're all really easy . Even without utilizing any bugs (that comment's to you MM1 select-pause cheaters, specifically ), they're all quite easy. If you want a challenge, try beating them without any special weapons whereever possible. It's commonly pretty easy, but in some cases it can be an absolute nightmare (the yellow devil in MM1? Oh god. It takes 28 hits to kill him, which is a long time not to die in, PLUS his eye is commonly too high to shoot, so it can take as long as 60 or so cycles to beat him. I can beat him without getting hit a lot of the time if I use the Elec Beam, since that's only 7 cycles, but not messing up too many times in 60 cycles is really, really hard. Ugh). But yeah: these games aren't hard.

You can check out his other thread, which is about SMB3. He asked this very same question in it, if I recall correctly, and thus didn't need to make an entirely new thread about it.

By the looks of the screenshot in the other thread, he's using FCEU,

Okay, come on. I see enemies overlapping, which looks odd (screenshot 1), enemies sprouting out of nowhere (screenshot 2), and enemies being overlapped by the solid background when they shouldn't ever be (screenshot 3). PLus, you can't honestly claim that the overworld is very changed, can you? You added a boring, flat coastline, changed a few pathways, and that's really about it. There's even a path that starts going to the water and then just stops. Furthermore, I can recognize some of your levels from the original game.

My recommendation is to put more work into making sure things aren't too buggy looking and recognizeable. It'll make it a better hack.

...okay. Let's go through this step by step. On your desktop, right click on My Computer and select Explore. This will bring up Windows Explorer. Click the tools button at the top of the window and select Folder Options. This will bring up a little window. Click the View tab in this window and uncheck "Hide extensions for known filetypes." It should be halfway down the list.

Did you find it?

Wow, that method is...well, a lot more complex than I'm used to for hacking palettes.

I can see how that method is more effective because palettes aren't always stored in the same format (sometimes they save a few bytes by leaving out colors) and because there are sometimes duplicate sets of palettes in a ROM, but I still think the old method, explained in this document, is simpler. Oh, and that document has a table of colors that's not an image, which is pretty cool. The list of colors at the end, though, is wrong; everything seems to be shifted by 1 after some point, so the author probably made a mistake when listing them out. It won't affect you if you're not making a palette file for something or anything of that sort.

Anyway, yeah. Good luck with using either or both methods.

Shyguy is the only person who commented on how bad that looks? I'm surprised. But anyway, piratepunk, you can't even have that as the title screen because it uses too many colors.

Pirvate Adamant: Exactly. The Yellow Devil's blocks always follow the same pattern, so dodging them is really easy. I also think the Guts platforms are really, really easy. The flying enemies in Ice Man's stage are a total pain, though; that's why I bypass them by using the Magnet Beam. Going through the sages in the proper order ensures you'll have that beam by then.

As for MM Network Transmission, I despise that game. It's not so much hard as incredibly frustrating. Mega Man's standard weapon might as well do nothing. Shooting enemies 10 times to kill them with its slow moving shots is the most annoying thing in the world.

Yeah, I mentioned that earlier in the thread, but not in such great depth. The autoscroll is also used in the Wily battle in Wily 4 - it just only appears to move Wily back and forth, rather than the whole screen.

But yeah, the remnants of Wily 5 are why there's a gap between Wily 4 and the ending. They use Wily 5's data space for the title screen and such now.

Oh, and I take back the balloon thing in Milon's Secret Castle. Turns out it can be collected in the well by killing an enemy I didn't know could be killed.

If we told everyone to stop, we'd have no hackers here to potentially improve and become good hackers.

mariofan: The newest screenshot is a little bland, and the world map could use some work. I see no problems with the first level picture you showed, though.

Inspired by the other thread about the most difficult Mega Man games, what Mega Man games are at the top of people's lists? I think I got them all (and mostly in order, save for some Mega Man Classic games that appear after MMX games), save for the ports (if one came out for multiple systems and I didn't mention the particular port you've played, just pretend you played one of the other ports ), so vote for your favorites.

Edit: That's odd. I included Rockboard: That's paradise as entry #38 in this poll and it's simply not showing up for some unknown reason. Any chance anyone knows what's up with that?

Since it's there, I guess votes for it will have to be expressed in posts. I vote for it. Also on my list are MM1, 3, X3, MM&B, and SAR.

I'd post this in the AcmlmBugs thing that was mentioned in an announcement, but I couldn't figure out how to submit a new bug report (is the Anonymous account capable of this?). It seems if you put a single quote ' into a poll entry, that entry will not appear in the poll list (at least, that's my best guess as to why entry #38 (Rockboard: That's Paradise) in my Favorite Mega Man games poll in the gaming forum isn't showing up; it's the only entry in my entire poll that isn't showing up, and the only one with a single quote). Also, I was seeing a slash before single quotes when I previewed my post, but I think that issue is already known.

Sorry for not getting this into the bug tracking system.
