I love my green knit hat with a 1up mushroom embroidered on it. Nobody really goes WTF at it, but I get compliments from fans of old-school gaming.

I eventually want to get a viking hat with horns just because they fucking rule. (And because I have more than enough hair for opera fat lady braids to go with the hat. I'm not fat, but my hair is. )

Wow, that really sucks. It doesn't surprise me, though.

I've been watching South Park off and on since it first came out. I went away to college very soon after the show started. The cable provider in the city of Pittsburgh did not carry Comedy Central, but CC was offered in the dorms, and I was all excited about getting to see the show. One of my email pals kept telling me how awesome it was, but I didn't get to see any of it until I got to college. I was impressed. I also downloaded the Spirit of Christmas short that started it all. I still quote that to this day.

Recently, my South Park viewership has been sporadic, but that's pretty much par for the course. I just don't care about seeing all the episodes of TV shows any more, even my favorites. Besides, this season has underwhelmed me thus far. The illustration of Scientology doctrine (complete with the THIS IS WHAT SCIENTOLOGISTS REALLY BELIEVE text across the bottom of the screen the entire time) was pretty good, though, as was replacing all the names in the credits with John and Jane Smith because Scientologists are known for suing those who criticize them.

POTTER POTTER POTTER POTTER WEASLEY WEASLEY

I'll definitely be seeing this soon. I've read all the books, but other than the second half of Chamber of Secrets, I'm not too up on the movies. I'm glad they removed the house elf liberation stuff, as that seemed too drawn out when I read the book. It would have been funny as a one or two-scene subplot, but Hermione kept beating it into us over and over and over again, so it got old to me fast. I'm looking forward to the awkwardness of the Yule Ball. And poor Ron in his fugly frilly hand-me-down dress robes...

Spaying/neutering animals is serious business. There is a major dog and cat overpopulation problem in the United States because too many people allow their animals to breed unchecked. Thousands of healthy, well-behaved animals are killed in shelters because there is no room for them. Spaying/neutering improves animals' health, too, by preventing various cancers and other diseases of the reproductive system. Both of my cats had their reproductive organs removed at the age of six months.

I'm about to go to bed and I'm hungry for a small snack, so I'm eating a South Beach cinnamon raisin cereal bar. I keep a few flavors of these things around. They have the same number of calories as other cereal bars (not much), but they contain 10 grams of protein, so they satiate you better (protein helps you feel full), and they taste anywhere from decent to ZOMG ROXOR. The cinnamon raisin flavor is my personal favorite. It even has a hint of butter.

I just ate another cereal bar and I'm drinking a Diet Cherry Coke. Breakfast of champions. Well, not exactly...it needs a container of cottage cheese. I love cottage cheese. I know that it's a gross-out food to a lot of people, but it tastes good enough to me that I eat it plain. I also like to make pancakes out of it. I use the recipe on this page with a bunch of Splenda and vanilla and orange extract added.

Sweetarts pwn. I've always been a big fan of Smarties, too. I love candy that's basically compressed flavored sugar.

Posted on 11-25-05 07:59 PM, in Who else is using the keyboard buttons as a mouse? Link
On my Mac, I use the mouse, but I make heavy use of keyboard shortcuts. There is a wide variety of OS X applications with highly featured keyboard shortcut sets that comply with standards set by Apple. Thus, the same shortcut tends to do the same thing in multiple apps, which makes shortcuts much easier to learn and remember. I look for this sort of standards adherence when picking out applications. (GIMP, which runs under X11, is the only exception, as there's no better free OS X image editor that I've seen yet, and I don't feel like buying Photoshop just to screw around with an icon every now and then ) I never replaced my standard soap bar Mac mouse with a multibutton, and honestly, it works. I don't mind holding a modifier to "right-click" every now and then.

On the Windows XP laptop, I try to avoid using the mouse as much as possible because it's a trackpad and though it works, it can be annoying to use precisely. Of course, plugging in a USB mouse solves that problem. All I'm really doing with the laptop right now is typing, though, so I never bother locating the mouse just for that.

I use the mouse all the time on my XP box at work because the keyboard shortcut set in EditPlus (our standard editor) is teh sux.

I rented the first one years ago. I liked it overall, but I could never get past the whale level because there wasn't any code sheet with the game and this was long before Nintendo Power printed the code in their magazine. I tried some numbers at random without any luck and gave up because there was no way I would go through 1000 possible combinations. There was a saved game on that cart with all the levels unlocked, and I remember trying Captain Bell's ship (the level after the whale, I think) and not being able to get past some room with pits that dropped you into a room with sharp logs poking up from the floor.

I also thought it was strange that the main character's name was Mike and he had red hair and red and blue clothing and wielded a yo-yo. Mikey of The Goonies II, an earlier NES game, had the same color hair and clothing and an identical weapon.

Yep, I know. Back when you could get a wide selection of NES rentals in the video section of a major supermarket chain, included instruction manuals became more and more rare. People wouldn't return them and the store never cared about replacing them. (Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if the first person who rented StarTropics at the local Giant Eagle kept the code paper because of its ZOMG COOL factor. ) The best you could hope for was a sticker on the inside of the rental box listing the control scheme and not much else.

Randy and I have a pair of 3-year-old cats we adopted at the age of 8 weeks from Setzer. Here's Chester...

And his sister Cookie...

And a more recent picture of both of them together. It's 104K, so I'll link it here.

We love our little guys. They're very affectionate and playful and generally well-behaved. They like to talk to us, give us headbutts, rampage around the house, flop and purr when we pet them, and cuddle up with us when we're stationary and they feel sleepy. They sleep in our bed regularly, too. Chester and Cookie are scratching post trained, and we were training them to wear walking jackets and leashes so we can take them outside, but we haven't put the jackets on in a while. Blargh. The weather around here has gone to crap anyway. Chester plays fetch with toy mice, and he likes to locate "prey" and howl to get our attention. If it ever gets annoying, we just hide the toy and he shuts up. They have caught real prey once, when a chipmunk got into our house during some maintenance work. Randy found it near the laundry where they like to leave their fake chipmunk toy. They didn't try to eat it because they never learned to catch prey for sustenance. This is A Very Good Thing(tm) because they didn't need to be checked for parasites afterward.

We don't want any more pets (other than maybe a fish tank) until our cats become geriatric furniture. Their basic care is very easy (scoop litter, keep food and water out, brush every now and then, clip their claws when they get long, clean up the occasional hairball), but they can be a handful. We swear they're part raccoon because they can get into pretty much anything. That is the downside to having smart, active cats. If they had opposable thumbs, they'd probably have taken over the world by now.

I feel your pain. Taco Hell was my first job. I worked there throughout my junior and senior year of high school and over the summer before I went to college. I liked the people I worked with, and I loved the food, so I dealt with the stupidity decently, I guess. I think it's good to explore other options, though. Heck, I've been looking for another job for over a year because my current one literally compensates me about half of what I'm worth.

Or maybe she was all OHNOES ZOMG GHEYS AIDS ZOMG OHNOES MEN HAVE BUTT SEX THE HORRORS ZOMG MY PEABRAIN ASPLODE NOW. Seriously. I wish I were kidding.

drjayphd - Word to your mother. I got annoyed with "Seasons of Love" back when I lived in the dorms. My building, Atherton Hall, is a unique dorm with an interesting history, and a group of students put on a play about it every year. When I participated, whoever worked on the script was like YAY RENT OMG and so we used that song with changed lyrics. The melody bored me. I mean, I thought it was an okay song (not terrible by any means, just mediocre). I honestly did not understand why they liked the song so much. And of course we had to sing it over and over and over again.

But I do plan to see the Rent movie. I don't know any of the other music, so I don't have any expectations along those lines. I do know that I like good musicals and this one has won awards, and board friends who are fans of the play like the movie, and as a result, I think it will be a well-done representation of the play and I'll enjoy it. Weeee rambly sentences.

I've been playing piano for over 20 years. I started as a child, stopped lessons when I was about ten, and just worked on stuff on my own after that. I can play some pretty complex pieces (such as a few Tori Amos covers...and my own compositions generally involve fancy fingerwork as well), but I really ought to take more lessons and work on my technique. I envy my friend Anna because she has had years of formal lessons and plays so well I thought she was a symphony recording one time when she was practicing her electric piano in the other room. But she tells me that she can't pick things up by ear or just compose out of nowhere like I do. If only we could combine forces. And then we'd have four arms and could play two keyboards at once. That would be impressive.

I have a Yamaha S80, a synth with an 88-key keyboard with very realistic weighted keys. I keep meaning to hook up the MIDI functionality, but I can never seem to get it to work on the computer end of things, so I just practice by piping the digital output directly through to my speakers. Someday I will use this behemoth for recording and not just as an electric piano with a lot of voices to it. Someday.

I also play rhythm electric guitar (I have a Fender Strat for that), but I'm so out of practice it's laughable.

No, it is not. Atheism is broadly defined as lack of belief in deity, not explicit rejection of the existence of deity. Some atheists do assert a belief that various deities do not exist, but not all do, and it is inaccurate to equate simple lack of belief with religion. Read Austin Cline's essays on the definition of atheism and belief vs. disbelief.

Most Christians believe in the existence of the Judeo-Christian God. Would you say that they actually have a religion based on disbelief in Zeus? Osiris? The Tuatha de Danaan? The Flying Spaghetti Monster and His noodly appendage?
