A long time ago, I held a worst layout contest. It was pretty awesome. Most of you are likely too new to remember it, so I thought I'd be charitable and bring it back.

The rules are simple:
--Post
--Edit your post's header and footer to replace your post layout with a really crappy one.
--Crappiest layout wins.
--No posts after this one are allowed to look presentable.

Any takers?

Edit by Ailure:
- Don't use scripts, seriously.
- Don't break tables.

Speaking of username changing massacres, whate ever happened to admins randomly going ballistic and changing people's names to whatever they saw fit?

Those days were fun.

Completed.

And if anyone copies this trick, I will strangle you.

Edit: The script of yours kept getting on repeat here...

Who's the Catfish that messed with my layout?

Me.

Keep in mind that I couldn't even scroll the page here when that popup was around. It kept coming up, even if it was defined as a mouseover.

Well that's just plain wonky. I'll let you get away with it this time. This time.

Yes, that's roughly the idea.

Major differences (for general knowledge: cpubasic13, check your gmail for the full spec and a template):
--You only need to draw one direction (facing right). The reason we're doing top-down in the first place is that it means we can make the computer do all the rotation for us.
--You can make the character bigger than that. The 16x16 area is mostly for the character's head and shoulder print; there's 32 pixels of overflow room to each direction that you're free to use for walking, attacking, whatever.
--Each action (a single attack, running, whatever) is only two frames.

Thanks for taking interest!

(and the chaos comment was about game design, not graphics, don't worry)

Hey everyone!

Check out my new ultra-compact layout!

I got sick of how people took up so much room with all their silly layout stuff, so I decided to make a much more compact one.

Hopefully this will encourage people to think more about how much space they take up with unneeded information.

Enjoy.

Yes, you'll float in the super-dense one and sink in the super undense one.

With such a huge diference in density as the one you describe, a human probably wouldn't be able to tell the liquid from air or concrete, flotation-wise.

If you were inside the super-dense liquid, it'd likely crush you before you floated out. Trying to breathe it would be a very bad idea.

If you were inside the undense liquid, your ability to breathe would depend on a number of factors. Firstly, and obviously, the liquid would have to be very nearly inert and completely non-toxic, and you'd have to fill around 20% of it with oxygen gas. Since the liquid would presumably be heavier than nitrogen (the usual 70% of your air) (didn't actually check), you'd have a lot of dificulty breathing, and would probably need to focus on your breathing a lot (or die). Even with a weight similar to that of air, you'd likely be having difficulty breathing, as liquids are just harder to pump around.

We just need more good silly threads.

The highest daily post-counts happen when there are a good number of silly threads that are running at the same time with people posting in them at different rates.

The different rates bit is important: every good user has a cut-off rate where they won't bother to read the thread, as it takes too long to catch up on to be worthwhile.

Yeah, projectiles, explosions, smoke clouds, and whatever else will be drawn in separate files.

I probably should link to the move list. So here's a link. Your pick as to which you do and who you want to start with.

Also: yay at more feedback.

This actually reminds me of a feature I would like to see (unlike user comments, which is just silly: if you want comments, do what I did on my page in the wiki). I'd like to see a "short post" option, where everything in your post is cut except your name, maybe the font/bgcolor, and the post itself (no avatar, stats, post layout, ect). A short post would only count as a tenth of a post (or less -- I'd even go for not at all) for post count and posts per page. Then, we could lower the standards for these posts and raise the standards for other posts.

It'd be great. I wouldn't want to stab everyone who uses a three-word post anymore.

I played this game a year or more ago, when it was called just "N".

Good game, but it handles lag really poorly. Things move differently under lag conditions, to the point of the same input having different effects under slightly different lag. I remember nearly beating a level, dying, then watching the replay, only to find that the replayed version doesn't die.

This is coupled with generating an inordinate amount of lag. I dunno if they draw all the tiles from scratch every frame or something stupid like that, or if flash just sucks that much, but it's noticable and sucks.

Additionally, the art is really bland. It'd be nice if they drew something different on top of each level. Pagodas and jungles and high-tech robotics factories, instead of grey and... more grey.

As much fun as character customization may be, I believe it would completely change the nature of the game as it was envisioned, and it'd lose a lot more than it gained. If, after the first release of the game, it seems like a good idea, I'll reconsider, but for now I'm not really thinking about it.

That said, the code should be flexible enough to make adding such a feature fairly easy. You should be able to create a character with an arbitrarilly large move set with each move pulled from any existing character with the addition of name, graphic, damage, and maybe some behavioral changes. However, I'm not sure I'm willing to put up with reviewing character submissions by hand, and there would have to be some for of arbitrary restraints on what you're allowed to do. There are a lot of aspects of it that are logistically confusing. I'm all ears if you have ideas, though.

One thing I actually plan on doing, which may spark your interest, is to, after the first version, add a feature where the server can occasionally assign everyone characters with scrambled move sets. Like... every ten rounds, people get random moves instead of their normal ones. It'd be horribly unbalanced, but it would be amusing.

In other news: between a nasty cold and tons of homework, I haven't been able to make progress recently. The project is still being thought about, however, and we found another artist.

You can still ask your question. I don't bite (wow, I typed byte accidentally the first dozen times I tried to write that. I've been here too long).

For reference, what character are you doing? It'll help to know who's doing what so we can better split things up.

Thanks again in advance for the help.

That's the story that was on 60 minutes?

Interesting stuff, but I think their conclusions were largely shakey. For example, that little kid who they kept assuming would grow up gay seemed more likely to grow up with gender dysphoria to me.

Personally, my instincts from studying emergent behavior make me think the people looking for a single cause are going to turn up empty handed. I think gayness comes from a huge number of factors, including genetics, conditions in the womb, the inherent randomness of cell placement (and its effects on the glands and brain), gender ratios observerved as an infant, and God only knows what else.

Then there's the question of whether we should bother looking for a cause in the first place. It seems the assumption is that finding a cause will make people stop being such idiots because they realize that gays are gay because they just are, rather than by choice, but think of the history of race relations. Nobody claims that somebody of a different color is a different color because they choose to be, but plenty of people have irrational hatred of whoever doesn't share their skin color anyway. Finding a reason will just force people will find newer and even stupider reasons to hate, and it seems just as likely that a cause would make people would view homosexuality as a defect that should be cured, which is hardly right either.

Oh, don't get me wrong. Grey's great. But like many great things, it's best used as a spice.

I mean, everyone likes peper, but very few people eat popsickles made of the stuff.

Unless you /want/ me to make a popsickle out of you.

In Wizards And Warriors (and its sequal, Iron Sword, which I remember better, so ), there was a guy that meets your description, but the guy wasn't wearing armor on the sticker, only in game.

(As long as we're nostalgia-ing, anyone remember Conquest Of The Crystal Palace? I've asked before, but I don't remember anyone ever saying they played the silly thing.)

In response to Rom Maniac's silly idea of nurturing newbies into full-fledged members:

People who join an internet forum are not suddenly reverted to toddlers and in need of guidance and nurturing. They are old enough to successfully operate a computer and reach a forum, and as such should already be capable of coherent thought. If they are not, then they have been socially inept for however long they have been alive and the amount of time they spend at a forum will not be enough to change anything.

The best posters always post intelligently from the get-go. Yes, they may start with weak grammar and horrible spelling on their first forum, and either way they probably will start with a lack of complete understanding as to what is going on. However, grammar and spelling, unlike ability to think coherently, are things that can be improved with practice. And figuring out what is going on is just a regular part of joining another culture.

On the other hand, some people are just plain stupid. You can tell who they are because they are just plain stupid.

(And Acmlm's does not ban enough people for just being stupid. Seriously.)

Spoons suck.

You never need a spoon. A fork will always serve you better.

If you claim that you need a spoon for soup, then you eat soup wrong. You eat soup with your face. And if you claim that you need a spoon for cereal, then you are missing out -- cereal is best eaten with a fork. If you claim you need a spoon for salad, you are just plain wrong.

A knife is occasionally useful, unlike the spoon.

Thus, if you were going to make a hybrid of any two of the three, it would have to be a fork and knife. Knirks all the way, man.
