Mathy, did you know that your post prior to this post stuck to our law with nary a fault?

If you still want confirmation that you cought on to our law, PM Squash with our law and Squash will confirm that you got it right.

As, obviously, it's absurd to try to post that law in this topic without violating that law. Or, with skill, it's a task that you may do, but it would spoil our topic for all. So you can't do that.

Posted on 12-10-05 11:58 PM, in I am not as enthusiastic about the internet as i was before. Link
There's a field of science called human geography* that studies how geography effects cultures. There's obvious stuff, like how cultures will be more similar that are close to eachother, less similar if theres a mountain range between them, or much less similar if there is a major body of water between them. And less obvious stuff, like how all the cultures near easy-to-farm plants and big dumb animals thrived while the rest got screwed.

Any place you go on the internet is going to have its own culture. It's going to be determined in part by really subtle things that I'm not going to claim to understand. It took some random genious years to come up with the easy-farming-and-big-dumb-animals thing.

But, more importantly to the point I'm going to eventually be getting at, there are the mountains and oceans.

Acmlm's is a bit of an island. It doesn't link to much of anything at all, not all too much links to it. Zophars is like a non-neutral version of Switzerland**.

At first logic, all the intelligent, interesting cultures on the internet are going to be linked to eachother. So, once you find one, you should find all of them.

However, once a good number of intelligent, interesting cultures become linked together, the chances of at least one of them being easy to get to from a search engine become greater. Being hit by a search engine puts a lot of stress on an internet culture. Lots of new people means lots of slight changes in culture. And lots of random n00bs.

So, the internet favors that intelligent, fun communities are fairly small.

And, additionally, the life expectancy of an internet culture is bloody short.

So, when your community dies, you'll make your way across other ones in the "region" until you exaust that "land mass". Then you'll be stuck back at a search engine. And anything you can find from there is something every lamer on the net can find just as easilly.

The intelligent, fun communities are still out there. But good luck finding them.

Post Scriptum:
On the internet, unlike in the real world, people can be citizens of more than one place. I could be a major poster on a crochetting forum halfway across the internet and none of you would know it***.

Somewhat interestingly, lots of people from the community tend to end up in the same places. I've run into Acmlmers at the IVAN forums and at KoL.

I'm not going to start trying to understand -- or especially not start trying to explain -- what effect this has on internet culture. Theres an effect though, I assure you.

Post Post Scriptum:
For anyone who's new here, posts like this are why I can get away with being random and spammy when you can't. See, when your normal posts look somewhat like that, it's absolutely hilarious when you suddenly turn around and make a two word post.

*If I got the wrong name for the field, go along with it.
**Historically, if Switzerland was less neutral and badass, it'd probably be a bit of a wasteland from all the wars that went through it, because it's right next to everything. Historically, Zophars is neither so neutral nor so badass, and right next to everything. Thus, it's not so much of a surprise that Zophars is a wasteland.
***I'm not. I wouldn't blow my cover like that, sheesh.

Oh, and it's underwater. Tell me one tentacle demon that's NOT underwater (No, octopusses doesn't counts.).
How about a mutant plant?
...
Okay, so it doesn't exactly have tentacles. Close enough, though, right?
...
Come on people, haven't you ever seen any graphic images involving the Pokemon Tangela?
Tangela's not even a Jellyfish, let alone a water type.

Try Tentacruel on for size:

His post made perfect sense in context.

How in the name of funky music does Tentacruel refute Pikawil's hypothesis that there are no tentacle monsters that are not underwater?

It is now a point in chronology that our topic has to ask a poll.

To all who know our trick : do you think it's now a good chronological point to allow all folks that don't know so far to know what our trick is?

Kawa, I really doubt that.

But I think you really hit on something there. The world /needs/ a game with fish mining.

As for the original topic:

You need way, way more information. A proper rough outline is like... twelve pages. Or at least mine are. But I'm a rambly bastard. So maybe two pages for you.

Yes, I have. It doesn't hurt nearly as much as people say it does.

This one time, we were playing team handball in gym class, and I was the goalkeeper. And somebody sent this really hard shot towards the goal, it was going to go right between my legs. So I stoop down and block it with my crotch, and it makes this huge echoing noise and everyone stops to look at me. One guy across the room falls over in pain just seeing the impact. Then I grab the ball and toss it over, and the only other guy who's paying attention scores a goal while everyone's distracted.

...but then again, acid reflux has left me with a rediculously high tolerance for pain.

Have you ever done something that made an entire room full of people stare at you in awe?

Posted on 12-14-05 06:53 PM, in Don't reply to this thread unless it hasn't had a reply in a week. [LETS WAIT SOME MORE - KATW] Link
A small horde of squash monsters hop towards the thread.

They're each carrying a rope, and every rope is attatched to a giant wooden cart.

The wooden cart, of course, is carying an organ. The organ is a very large type, with many pipes poking out the top. The pipes are of various sizes, made of esophagi and intestines and such. In fact, the whole organ is made of organs. There's even a bagpipe somebody fashioned out of some lungs hanging off the side.

Squash Monster, that is, the squash monster with the capitalized name, hops up to the thread to deliver an anouncement.

"You all fail!"

The cart suddenly flies into the air, leaving only a very large spring in its wake. The spring is visably happy to be free.

Looks like the organ's heading towards the thread. Probably going to hit everone who posted there. Utter shame.

Is anyone still going to go along with this?

I'll help with whatever I can, though I'm usually busy, and technically a Java programmer.

But, either way, if this is finished, it's still in library format, and it's remotely reasonable to access the library from Java, I will program a working "Do my hack for me." button. No joke.

If I can't say something nice and sincere, I'm going to say something mean and sincere.

Thems the breaks!

Certain major posters are still completely oblivious and really aught to learn some reading comprehension.

XKeeper is still an anarchistic hacker and thus is still the best admin this board could hope for.

Yoshi Dude, Danielle, Kawa and KATW are all really cool. It's a shame they don't often post in any threads I bother reading.

Alastor the Stylish isn't as edgy and fun as he used to be.

We have some really, horrendously, unabashedly vacant newbies in ROM hacking lately.

Most of the people who post in Game Creation are really lame. What on earth is with that?

Squash Monster is definately more of an angry old ranting man than he used to be.

It's a typo, get over it.

And you've only made eleven posts other than the ones in this thread. People aren't going to remember you or know who you are from just that.

Tamarin Calanis -- Seriously, this is the first of your posts I've seen since the new board. Then again, I only read 25% of the threads in an eighth of the forums, so that's not all that surprising. You get the same reaction as YD and KATW and all. And five happy smile points for listing me and getting it right.

What would the button do?

Replace the selected level with whatever the program feels like at the moment.

...That is to say, Ailure gets a happy smile point for being right about random level generators.

Sukasa was asking for what to start with?

Personally, I'd recomend pinning down the game's level format.

Yeah, I know, I know. I don't remember any posts by this name back on the old board. But yeah. People need to get one name and stick to it. Posted on 12-15-05 08:18 PM, in Zero division?! Link
The only way you can divide by 0 is by taking a limit.

1 / 0 is not infinity, because 1 / infinity is not 0.

DahrkDaiz is correct that the value of 1 / Z approaches 0 as Z approaches infinity, but that's not the same as 1 / infinity equalling 0. Taking the value of an expression as it approaches a certain value is a mathematical operation of its own called a limit. You can't perform a mathematical operation and fail to report it. It's the same as saying 2 = 3 because when you add one to 2 you get three.

The limit as Z approaches 0 of 1 / Z is infinity*. The limit as Z approaches infinity of 1 / Z is 0. 1 / 0 does not equal infinity. 1 / infinity is not 0.

*Well, it could be negative infinity. Depends on which direction you approach from
