Hrm.

Maybe I'll talk about sprite comics sometime later, but for now I'll note this.
The art doesn't have to be great, creative, or even different from strip to strip in order to make a good comic (see Death to the Extremist and Dinosaur Comics). But regardless of how the visuals are deployed, if you're making comics you're working with a visual medium.

The problem with this and the vast majority of sprite comics is that they're rough drafts.

Someone who can't draw wants to make a comic. He sees a few good sprite comics and thinks "I can do that." He has a few ideas, so he opens up his image editor of choice, copies and pastes some sprites in, types in the dialog, and TA-DA!!!! IT LOOKS JUST LIKE THE PROS! Of course, the truth is that any good creator of comics spends a good chunk of time on each strip (well, some more than others), whether or not that shows through in the art. But hey, you can't tell just by looking at 'em!!!!

The point is, sprite comics have a well-deserved reputation for being bad. They suck because they're easy to make. Not all sprite comics are bad, but because they're so easy to pump out, the vast majority is just random debris from people who have GREAT NEW IDEAS FOR HOT NEW COMICS and don't realize it takes time and effort to produce something good.

Riku, I don't want you to get all depressed because your comic sucked. I don't want you to get the idea that you shouldn't express yourself through whatever. Just realize that you need to take time to make sure you're happy with what you've got. Honestly, I can't imagine that if you had kept these for a while and read over them that you would have thought they were what you wanted them to be.

I made shitty sprite comics. I made three different series of shitty sprite comics. I released mine in an environment where I wouldn't get any criticism. I didn't have to deal with harsh cutdowns, of course, but it also meant that I put plenty of shit out there with my name on it before I realized I was just doing something wrong.

I haven't made any comics since. Right now I'm learning to draw for real. I have some ideas I'd like to explore. My brother and I have an idea for a comic we could work on together. I'll just have to wait and see.

I've embarrassed myself in other ways, too. Not too long ago I was producing what I called "poetry" on these very boards. Same kind of thing. From the layman's perspective, it's sometimes hard to tell a good poem from a bunch of random crap scribbled on a piece of paper. I took away the wrong idea from this fact and started scribbling. Once I had a bunch of sentences that vaguely described a sort-of deepish idea I kind of had in my mind, I figured... hey, you can't tell this from "real" poetry. I guess I'm doing it right! Man. I don't know how I put up with myself. Well, I was in high school. That's my excuse.

Anyway. My point is, don't worry that nobody likes your comic. It's a bad comic. Don't worry that you put up a bad comic for everybody to see. Don't think that just because you tried pretty hard and created a bad comic and everybody saw it and laughed at you that you need to lock yourself away and not express yourself anymore. Just... get some self-respect.

Contrary to what I've been saying about releasing comics, I'm not going to look over this post before I submit it. I hope the parts about me didn't overcrowd the other stuff.

Yeah, there were problems last night. At one point I logged in just enough to load the world and the positions of people in the crossroads. I was invisible, and I got to run around and look at "Unknown Entity," "Scout Unknown Entity," etc.
